OP ELLAMY Gong

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
Seen the details on AirWeb after looking for one of my lads. Pop on for a look, and the whole criteria is explained. Seems they are being quite strict this time. Only people actually out of the UK are eligible. Seems like it will be a limited medal with only 2k or so authorised!

Another pointless piece of tin. In a few years people will be strutting around, looking down their noses at others with fewer medals. In reality, for the vast majority of those not flying into harm's way, it is nothing more than a 'staying in hotels and eating pizza' gong. To add to the other turning up medals. But I suppose some people will alwyas get a hard on by them, heaven knows why???

'Devils Advocate mode on'

I don't own an Ellamy gong, although I do own a couple of other 'Chocolate Medals'. Now, they don't compare to Medals bestowed for Acts of Valour etc and rightly so, but rather than showing disdain for them, maybe for some it represents being a part of an event which has had a profound effect, and one which has helped shaped the world to what it is now. (Lets not get into how good or bad that shape is)

So, yes - hardly a DFC or VC etc but they do represent the fact that you have served your Country and shouldn't be something to be ashamed of.

'Devils Advocate mode off'

Well, for me, I'll be getting it and this'll be my 8th "gong" in 20 years service so thank you very much.

Why do I rejoice - well why friggin' not! I fcuking earn't these "pointless pieces of tin" at the expense of being ordered to cancel engagements, holidays and leave at my family's expense so I'll be proudly wearing my mine.

Knob!

Cant seem to find it on airspace...diaspora only mentions its been approved

I'm sure it's the Airweb site. The same one you go to for all clothing 'threads' issues etc. I'd copy and paste if I were sure it would not be contravening anything. Pretty much the NATO reg's about 30 days, but people with less may still qualify as it was understood how the various units rolled their personnel!

I don't understand those who don't value theirs though? I have my grandad's, and will have my dads Police medal one day. The chance to be able to pass them down the family gives me a lot of comfort and a kind of link through the generations. I'd never hunt them, but I certainly wouldn't turn them down.

I won't qualify for this one but congrats to anyone who has earned it. There's a lot of comment about it being an easy holiday, but from being heavily involved from the UK side at the end, I can safely say it was anything but Butlins!

Indeed mate. Alhough I was at Aki for 58 days one worked an average of 16 hours a day without a single day off. As Muttley would say - "Gimmie, Gimmie, Gimmie!"

and the other options were ? I think you will find the vast majority put everything on hold for a year. If NATO are going to reward me with a medal and not much else then I'll take the medal.........pizza my arse, try living on buttie boxes for months until the field kitchens turned up, which was very nice I must say.

cock.

Now you've called me a 'cock' I realise what a big mistake I've made. You are so brave, so selfless, so strong. I wish I were like you and had a medal.

****.

Indeed you do, but I guess you never will. Congratulations on that one. Somethings never change including the presence of internet trolls.

For you to say it's a worthless bit of tin is out of order. Many people made a massive effort to complete Op Ellamy and if a medal is a way of displaying the effort made then it's not up to you to pour scorn on it. Don't compare it to WW medals or GSM, OSM etc etc, the Libya medal stands for something else.

If the word cock was a bit strong for you, I apologise but i refuse to use asterisk

Seen the DIN today so everyone sit back and wait for your shiny new gong. Unless you're not getting it and feel the need to abuse everyone who is.

Did it specify locations? Some of my lads weren't in Italy or Cyprus....

I'm not getting as I wasn't there (anyway extra medals are getting too expensive nowadays) but well done to those who did. However, what's wrong with comparing it to the GSM or OSM (I have one of each by the way)? From what I've read the experience of the RAF ground trades and branches on Ellamy don't appear to have been that much different to those who were awarded the GSM with clasp for Air Operations Iraq - ie working hard to generate air power but in locations that were well away from a threat.

I was pre-empting the standard comparisons that are normally made. To be honest I came up against more hardship in Southern Italy than I ever did in Iraq or Afghan. The challenges were different, that's what I was leading to.
