Op Shader Medal???

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
The only person to die on duty on that Op was based in Italy.

Yes I know and in that situation like every other death on ops the medal, and if in the appropriate op, OP bonus would be awarded regardless of how many days completed.

In a similar vein I never did find out how the VC-10 groundie who fell off the top floor balcony of his hotel in Cyprus faired? I helped deal with the immediate aftermath in ops but rotated back to the UK without knowing the end result.

Anyone? I know he was banged up enough for his parents to fly out and the Padre to be preparing for the worst.

Was he pushed out of the window by a Libyan?

im not going to link, but the din is out, looks like op shader chaps in cyprus aint getting it

Pilots who have carried out a certain number of sorties and any one else a set number of days within the international boundries of iraq and Syria.

He recovered and was back at work after a fairly hefty lay off. Not sure if he had any residual brain injury as he's a Brummie and it's hard to tell!

Brilliant thank you. I was in ops when it happened and helped the Padre to get things moving re relatives out and installed by his bedside ...initially his prognosis looked quite grim and after I shipped back and left the mob within days of doing so I always wondered how he got on

A monumental necropost, but hey; I thought this thread was the appropriate one ....

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-medal-unveiled-to-recognise-the-fight-against-daesh

... and resume discussion ...

The previous Defence Secretary's words were ....

The changing character of warfare provides new challenges – not just about how we fight but also how we recognise and support those who serve.

As fighting has evolved we have adapted, ensuring our troops have cutting edge equipment including unmanned systems operated from outside the battle space. Our recognition of service, the risks taken, and the long-term effects must therefore adapt too.

That is why we need to examine how to provide medallic recognition for those making a vital contribution to Op Shader outside the battlespace, from Reaper pilots taking life and death decisions to those who ensure our planes can strike Daesh targets.

(from https://www.gov.uk/government/news/...in-the-fight-against-daesh-with-service-medal)

Which, to me at least, alludes to those on the ground at AKI working in various roles to keep the jets in the air.

However, the current Defence Secretary today said ....

I am pleased that today those who have bravely fought against such untold evil will get the recognition they deserve. Reflecting the changing nature of warfare I am pleased to announce that the medal will now recognise those making a vital contribution to Op Shader from outside the conventional area of Operations, for example those Reaper pilots taking life and death decisions from back here in the UK.

So, will or won't ground-based personnel get the gong, or are the government only signing off on UAS crews and overlooking those in the ground-based roles deploying away from families for protracted periods but still contributing to the Op in location various?

I guess time will tell!

Not a chance. That's the old Falklands medal Northwood analogy

Certain people need placating and retaining, and it's not a logical a progression as you might imagine.

When I read the updated DIN yesterday I’m pretty sure it said you had to be in country or over country. Thus excluding akrotiri.

It is not an OP SHADER medal it’s an OP SHADER Iraq and Syria medal. You have to have been in Iraq and or Syria for 30 consecutive or 45 accumulated days to be eligible. Pers based solely on Aki or other bases will not be issued the medal.

According to the MOD Website it says that a new DIN will be issued in the near future but it may include locations such as RAF Waddington, Cyprus, Qatar, Souda Bay in Greece, and Creech Air Force Base in Nevada.

I’m going to guess that will be to incorporate aircrew and RPAS pilots.

I'd love to see that DIN for all those places with the exclusion of Cyprus, just for the lolz :)

I believe it will be an OSM without bar the same as Herrick zone 2, If it doesn't cover Cyprus there will be uproar.pic.jpg

having suffered 6 months of Qatari winter hell with a broken swimming pool, I have to say this has been along time coming.

It isn’t covering Cyprus as I’ve said earlier. You are only entitled if you have had boots on the ground in Iraq and or Syria for 30 days consecutive or 45 accumulated. Aircrew is based on number of sorties within the airspace. The Voyager crews who have only done Cyprus an back without entering the conflict airspace won’t have those sorties counted.

Techie Tubby, have you seen the DiN? I haven't yet but just been briefed by our Sqn boss that it does include 45 days in Cyprus therefore many of the Engineering personnel will be eligible but do not get the clasp. This would also tie in with The Defence Sec statement:

The Defence Secretary also confirmed today that Her Majesty the Queen has approved the extension of the eligibility criteria for the medal to new groups of personnel. It means that the medal will also recognise those who have made a significant contribution from outside the conventional area of operations in Iraq and Syria, including civilians.

Happy to be corrected.

The updated IBN is very clear, states you must have had time in Iraq and Syria. A lot of ground crew at Lossiemouth aren’t eligible same with 140 EAW who set up SHADER.

The current DIN will be superseded in the near future with a DIN containing the NEW eligibility requirements for the medal. eligibility for the clasp will still be as per the current DIN, i.e. 30 days continuous or 45 total in the borders and 10 Iraq/6 Syria sorties for aircrew.

I'm interested in what the new criteria will be for RPAS crews. Will it be measure in sorties conducted, days at the unit, hours logged?

Also, how will this affect future operational and campaign medal eligibility with RPAS crews based in the UK and US? Could this in future lead to someone being based exclusively within RPAS Sqns for their entire career, a chest full of medals but never having set foot out of Waddington?
