I'm needing to get something cleared up. At the super top secret training base in the West Mids they are banning/removing the cooking facilities in SLAM. Now I thought that under the PAYD contract they have to provide you with facilities to cook for yourself. Is this true? Can they just turn around and ban people from using facilities in the block like that? There have been no reports of them being left dirty, or mis-used or setting off fire alarms etc.

Asked the same question at our last CO's inspection. He said they did not have to supply any facilities for us to prepare and cook food and if he had anything to do with it everything would be taken out the kitchens and people would have to use PAYD. Also heard from one of my mates that he had read something that stated we had to be supplied with cooking facilities and that there had to be a certain amount of square footage and preparation areas in line with the amount of people who used the kitchen. Can't remember where he read it, will ask him next time I see him.

they've removed all the cooking facilities at the secret Fife airforce base, but I thought that SLAM wasn't owned by the RAF and that you wouldn't be allowed to tamper with the blocks at all?

If they remove it they are pretty much forcing you to eat in the mess.

Or walking/driving to the garage for a subway :PDT_Xtremez_30:

Back to the OP heard rumour some while back of this happening in perm staff blocks but not in trainee ones, but apparently some blocks contain both. This has resulted in lots of head scratching at money scrimping central. Other rumours include they can't do PAYD to trainees, oh yes they can is the counter rumour. Interesting if the OP is correct that they are doing this smack in the middle of the two week summer break for trainees.

So by removing the cooking facilities from the SLA,they are,in effect, denying singlies a quality of life on par with those married,in that a married airman can nip into his kitchen at 10pm & knock up a cheese toastie or a bowl of soup, whereas a singlie cannot because the powers that be have deemed it that said singlie can't have access to cooking facilities.
Feck,if that singlie was an asylum seeker & the SLA was an assylum center, then it'd be a breach of his 'uman rights!

They tried to take out the cooking facilities at one of the Garrisons in Germany, but the lads got the contract management people and Army legal involved and it got thrown out because it was a breach of the PAYD contract. Surely it's one contract that covers the entire MoD? Regardless if it's sub contracted out they should all be working to the 1 PAYD contract? If they are removing the facilities from certain blocks then why not MoD wide?

Is it just me? Or should the following read "morale" instead of moral.

0103. CRL/PAYD Aim and Vision. The aim of the CRL/PAYD is to “enhance the moral
component of fighting power”.

No I think 'moral' is the correct word. It is stating the PAYD is the right way to enhance the component of fighting power... I think.

Found on internet: an adjective of moral.
"founded on the fundamental principles of right conduct rather than on legalities, enactment, or custom: moral obligations."

Also, here at my 'secret' sh!t base my block has no cooking facilities what so ever. A while ago I did some trawling on Defence Net using the wonderful search function... I found a publication that listed general entitlements for SLA. I think it was a JSP; and I think I bookmarked it. I will have a check in the morning and update this thread.

SLAM is leased by the MOD and hence no cooking facilities. The company is called Lend Lease.

i stand to be corrected but i lived in one of the first project SLAM blocks at marham and it had full cooking facilities, two ring hob with extracor fan in a kitchen with sink and provision for microwave (which we had) and toaster, and toastie maker with no complaints.

sounds to me like the PAYD people want to deprive people of the choice to cook for themselves, typical of someone wanting to create a monopoly?

Same as the block I was in at Kinloss (Block 90 iirc) back in 85,apart from the extractor fan that is,and Microwaves were'nt widely available then unless you bought one on the never never or a loan!

Think that may be the same JSP my mate was talking about. Stated the amount of cupboards per person, prep space, plugs etc

I thought the whole point of PAYD was to offer more choice when and what you eat? For example, if we don't want to eat in the mess we don't have to.

Seems like they are not fulfilling that.

Here up north, it's scandalous. The only veg option you have is chips, beans and sweetcorn. The salad choice is lacking, i.e has had no lettuce for days... since when was there a national lettuce shortage???. And if you want to eat healthy fruit salad you have to pay extra, but higher fat cake is part of the core meal. And no way can you get enough protein, lack of meat seems to be their number 1 way of saving money.

The raf harp on about "fit for op's" but you'll struggle to be all that you can be, eating the stodge that they serve up.

I don't blame the cooks as they try with what they get. It seems a contract / ISS fault thats shafting our very own guys.

All SLAM blocks here have two ring hobs, microwaves, fridges, and the normal blocks all have a fridges and combi- oven/microwaves. You can have your own items in the kitchens as long as they are PAT tested. Think its a station by station thing - as the SPAR here sell alsorts of microwable stuff. I know that here they are also looking at putting in toasters and sandwich toasters into the kitchens.
