Yes but......

Yes but......

I have an escape plan but bye the time it comes to fruition I will be too close to pension to through it away.
I orginally planned to leave in 3 or 4 years time but looking at what contributions I'd have too make to get a decent pension thought sod it!
I'd also have to work past my intended age of retirement, besides it's still what you make of it and I've had a good time so far!

f*ck 22! signed on for 22 2 years ago but the way the raf's going at the moment itll be a wonder if im still in in 2 years. warfighter my ar5e!!

A long way off for me. I always wanted to, but things have got bad in the last couple of years. Maybe the Guardian reading, sandal wearing PC brigade will be kicked out in the next election.:PDT_Xtremez_32:

well, i still have time to do before my 9! but nothing is set in stone. I might sign up for 12 but by that time we'll be the RFC again

I keep telling myself its worth it for the pension. Plus I concur with Budgie, who would employ me at the same wage I have become accustomed to. Christ adminstrators in civvy street get fcuk all. I'd have to retrain and, frankly, I'm far to lazy to do that. So I will carry on taking the Queens shilling until I'm 40, then get a job at Asda stacking shelves to top up my pension.

22, then what to do?

22, then what to do?

As I have a young family, 22 is without a doubt the earliest I will think about jumping ship. I do have LOS 30, so a job (not career, barsteward CIO liars) till I'm 48. But will I stay on past 22?

Maybe for those caught in the post 12, pre 22 trap the poll should be, pension and run or job, The way the IA trade is going that is a close call at the moment.

I would hate for the experience around to go and the RAF decending into the re-learning of things that should not have been forgotten.

I think it's already forgetting the stuff it learnt the hard way. You've only got to look at the techy side of things.
I am stuck in the past 12, young family trap.

Yup, signed up to 22 6 years ago and hope to last the course, I'll stay til 55 if they'll have me.

Failing that it's MPGS all the way! :PDT_Xtremez_15:

Halfway to 22, but christ its getting hard to stand the b*ll**** that flying around these days.

Somedays I think what the feck am I still doing here? If I was a priest I think it would would be called a "crisis of faith", so what the feck is it called in the mob?

Might as well. No company would employ me anyway.

Budgie- Don't you believe it! You ARE very employable and loadsa civvie companies are bending over backwards for ex Forces types.

Do your 22 if you must, if it's too far away then jump now, attend all the resettlement courses you can, write your own CV and get it posted on as many sites as you can. I still get job offers/interview requests since I started my job applications last summer.

DO NOT DOWN YOURSELF!!! YOU ARE HIGHLY VALUED IN CIVVIE STREET!

If you want to discuss then plse PM me, I do have contacts for techies types and I can forward your CV if you want to carry on fixing jets.

Correct.

Simply having a military background on your CV displays a known quantity, whereas a civvy one an unknown quantity.

At least, that's how an employer will think. Don't upset the apple cart :)

I couldn’t endorse the last two posts more. (the future is bright  )

Firstly use your 22 to educate your self, using either your ELC or SLA to financially assist - ok the rules are tight and say that unless you are in your last 2 years then you have to use it to educate your self in line with your current job. However, you have to be clever here e.g. as a mechanical Techie' use the broad spectrum banner of "Engineering" to allow you scope to do something such as electronics or computing, just as some one who is admin ' could look to business or legal studies - what I'm saying is do not under blinker your self or stick your head in the sand... (Good advice for all those in Iraq!!!)

Talking of which, if you find your self on det' with nothing to do for four months then get to the education facilities and learn an extra language, employers will look very favourably on that.

You have some skills that are very costly in civi street...e.g. your CCS - (the first aid and fire part that is). All civi companies have to have trained first aiders in the work place, if you could get on a course before you leave then a prospective employer will take note of this because, that so many hundreds of pounds they do not have to spend on training someone up!

If you opt for 22 in the following few years I think you will gain some remarkable skills just though the direction that the RAF and Armed forces as whole may be forced to take its personnel e.g. manpower reductions could open out opportunities that weren't previously available e.g. Look at the aircraft Tehcie's who are multi-trading or at the extreme there was a call to disband and merge the RAF in the Army and Navy. On the one hand, what extra hassle would a move like that generate but on the other what opportunities would it bring?

Use your 22 wisely it not often that you will find one employer willing to fund and train you to go and do another job!!! (End of broadcast)

22 then out for me, I've seen too many snecs at jobs fairs practically begging for jobs after doing LOS 30.

If you can't make FS, get out and give some-one else a chance.

A rotund snec at a secret location in North-Yorkshire - where I thankfully escaped from - is only doing LOS 30 so he can keep his kids in boarding school (his words) and has no interest in the job what-so-ever; what a waste of a PIC number. His Cpl is working his nut-sax off just to keep the section afloat.

Yes, ex-forces people GENERALLY are a sought after commodity. However, some believe that because they have served, that they have a god-given right to a specific job.

I've spoken to people who've interviewed prospective candidates and they said that some (a small minority) ex-forces are so cocky in the interviews and give an air of self-importance that they aren't offered the job. "I fought in the Gulf/Kosovo/NAAFI, you know". "I had 60 lineys under my command" bla bla bla.

Be proud of your service, be confident etc but don't expect to be given the job just because you were a fat SNCO who did nothing but Squadron Ops or something less dynamic. :D

Hopefully you gentlemen are correct about the employability of ex service types. I have 3years left and the **** that is flying around DCAE? RAF? XYZ? Lunatic asylum at cosford is getting harder to bear. Its only the fact that I took the Queens shilling in the first place that keeps me working.

The pension trap does not have me yet! But I'm in for 9 years, when I get there I might as well do the 12, then when I'm there, I'm over half way for the full 22....

Assuming that in 2015 we still have an air force!

I like your thinking there FBC, I took the 22 route and am in the pension trap, currently sitting with 5 1/2 to go it's a long way from 12 to 22. You might want to think about the cash that's offered when you hit 12 as a good downpayment on a mortgage but if you really want to do the 22 then go for it and all the best

1st week in 2013 and counting!!!!
