Question for the Snecs

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
You lot are a right bunch of fcuking matrys. I don't do hanger cleans, in fact on Sundays when the lads clean the hanger all the SNCO's go to breakfast,I don't do sh1t jobs that I don't want to do. I don't put my overalls on. What I do is the jobs that SNCO's should be doing and delegate them to the lads. I spent years sweeping hangers and doing what my chief asked. It's now the CPL's and SAC's turn of today to do what I ask. A Chief in overalls!! not on my fcuking shift.

Fair do's on that one!

Bloody hell..what a load of tosh!! as a SNCO you are damned if you do and damned if you don't!..most of us would love to muck in, get our hands dirty and relive the days of old but....do you really think the Cpl's would be happy with us around them all day! ???..SNCO's have management issues to deal with, Cpl's have supervisory issues to deal with and mechanics have the work to do!..it's called a rank structure ,there is a reason for it and it works ( in the main)

I quite often muck in but I do not over do or outstay my welcome..the JNCO's run the jobs!.

I'm now off to the anti room for a sleep and then a read of the paper! :PDT_Xtremez_19:

At last!!!!! some sense, now back in your office and let the juniors get on with it!!!!.................................................................:PDT_Xtremez_19:

Arrrrrr I remember in the 80's - myself as the Line Chief and Flight Sergeant BF with overalls on, doing OOP MLG shocker changes on a Wessex because there was no manpower left to do it. Happy as pigs in **** we were - even when OC Eng caught us in the act.
He politely inquired what we thought we were up to and once he had been appraised of the situation, was more than happy with our efforts - but did tell us not to do it again.
As previously said, Snecs should be prepared to contribute if and when required but it's a twin edged sword - might make the Snecs and the lads relationship good but could be hiding a woeful manpower shortage if allowed to become the norm.

I think you'll find S2 that we only go to breakfast after the Snecs have finished cleaning up with the lads on a Sunday morning, and that is your shift. Personally I think that sucks, I spent 17 years doing that rubbish before getting my 3rd and the sh1te jobs just keep following me up the ranks as the Airforce shrinks. I don't have a problem getting out on the shop floor and doing aircraft work, indeed it's the norm at our place and I'd rather do that anyway. Unfortunately we tend to get tied up with ridiculous amounts of paperwork that take as long as the jobs themselves as mentioned by a previous poster

What incentive is it to the young lads to push through for their third if, 15 yrs or more later, they see those Sgts still doing the same jobs?

A lot to learn mate!

My last Sunday working in the RAF as a CT, was spent sweeping the hanger.

I'm now about to start a new job, half a dozen lads who used to work for me in the RAF have all recommended me to the manager! Must have done something right?

Cos they don't fit ;-)

Someone's tired!

Been a lot of discussion at our place recently about the Sgts having to "step down" onto shift to help out at pinch point manning times. The 2 snecs work perm days as manpower controllers essentially.

Right or wrong?

One school of thought says tey've left the sh1t jobs behind them, the other school of thought thinks they should lead by example and from time to time step in to help out the lads.

What does the goat think. FWIW I think I know how this will pan out, largely dependant upon current rank.

I'd love to do shift work again! 2 days 2 nights and a good golf handicap!

Well I can only speak for my last section, but I much preferred the SNEC to sit in the office and do the paperwork, deal with the aircrew and the JENGO/FS/Wobbly Orange. As others have said, he's spent years as an SAC/JT/CPL getting his hands dirty, so it's now time to do what he is paid to do and manage the shift - we have JNCOs to supervise the tasks. We actually 'strongly suggested' to a former Sgt of mine that he retire to the office because he'd come out to help us empty the bins - I think he's earned the right not to do that!

Saying that, it's a poor show when you're down to one JNCO and one SAC(T) and the SNCO is still in his blues but thankfully I never worked with anyone like that (not in our trade anyway)

We did have at one point more SNCOs on shift than JNCOs and JRs combined, so obviously this didn't work all of the time! :D

Can't think what though!

One problem with Seniors working is when 2 of them do a nose wheel change (including paperwork, 731s etc) without a wheel change jack on a recently defunct pointy swing wing arrow of death in just over 20mins, means the lads can't swing the lead and drag similar job out for over an hour!

Just come from the land of mud-moving and it's the norm for 2 out of the 3 snecs on the desk to be in overalls while the third looks after the paperwork. Just been promoted to Rects Control and I still go out and help with the FOD plod or tidy cups in the tea-bar if the lads are all out. Jobs need doing, get done, end of.

All you were good for was FOD plods and tea-bar................. :PDT_Xtremez_30:

i think the real problem at the mo is that the snco's and to an extent to nco's know that they've got quite a whilst left in the raf whilst the jrs know that unless something changes soon they don't have too long left so why should they be at the bottom of an institution that is very quick to cut them off?? lets face it if you left as an sac im pretty sure you'd laugh if you sat on the interview board for your old fs in 5 yrs time, i know it sounds a bit unrealistic but i'm pretty sure it's gonna happen!!!

It did happen at Cottesmore HMF if I recall, a JT who left got quite high up within BAe and ended up interviewing some of his old bosess for jobs.
