Ready to use an ELC? - PRINCE2 fits well

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
Here at the swamp they run a 1 day intro course in the education centre but I doubt it goes into much depth. I'm gonna speak to my boss about getting on this IPMC at Cranfield.

I'm beginning to wonder if I've bitten off more than I can chew. I was booked onto P2 at Benson next week and it's just been cancelled. Could be a blessing in disguise seeing as the pre-course reading only turned up last week whilst in the middle of moving house. I'm wondering now if I've got enough background knowledge to get through it being a lowly chevron deux and not having done the IPMC thing. These things never stop them taking your money off you though does it.

If you do not want to doPrince2 which is the metodology used mainly in the public sector ( and 75% of public sector projects fail) try the Engineering Project Management Diploma course run at The University of Greenwich Engineering facilty in Chatham, outstanding course cost about £1100

I looked at that as part of my resettlement but that looked even more out of my league than P2 now does. They sent me the lterature with all the quotes in it from previous students saying how good the course was. Not one comment was made by somone below the rank of chief which put me off totally.

what to do, what to do?

To be fair it was all SNCOs and Officers on my course

Cheers Wolfy. I'll see how P2 goes next week and take it from there. If I do decide to do the Greenwich option I'll have to fund my own food and accomodation for 2 weeks as I won't have enough resettlement time left to cover the whole 5 week course.

Think very carefully before doing Prince2, it is a good course in many ways because all public service departments require their PM's to get the qualification, however they expect them to be PM's first! If you really want to be a PM but have little project experience (real projects with real budgets that can be quantified because that's all the civvie world is interested in) then apply for jobs as a trainee/ junior PM, the money isn't brilliant but you will get experience, you will get qualified and you will become viable in the employment market. If you want to be a trainee PM do the online course for free, this will introduce you to the language and principles therefore help you through the interviews.

If you don't want to work in the public sector then forget Prince2, nobody else uses it! Prince2 is very expensive, there are far better courses to spend both ELC and resettlement on, Prince2 will not get you a job without viable experience even if your mates cousins best mates girlfriend once got a job on £50K a year because of it................. Viable experience specifically requires you to have controlled a project budget and have managed a project, not lots of little management tasks which any departmental manager would be expected to do on a day to day basis outside the wire!

Don't be suckered by the hype of Prince2, that being said if you have nothing else you want to do with your ELC you will learn a lot from the course and it may go some way toward showing a future employer some commitment to working in PM.

Cheers for sharing your view Chiefy although now I feel even less capable of doing the course than before and even less like like it was an appropriate choice in the first place. I drive down on Sunday so I reckon it's too late for me to do anything about it. Looks like I've just blown my resettlement allowance and 5 days leave for no use whatsoever.

Don't panic if you have already committed yourself to it, many management jobs require knowledge of Project Management so it will certainly help in that respect. Understanding the language and principles, regardless of whether you end up as a PM will do more good than harm. Good luck.

Even if you are not employed in a PM role when you get out, it will alway add to your CV

You can purchase MS Office 2007, Visio 2007 and MS Project 2007 for approx £17 each.

Please note, the terms of the licence states that it is only valid whilst you are employed by the MOD...yeah right!

I used the link from metimee but Visio was about £100 and project £200+ Am I missing something?

Well, it's done and dusted now. Wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Nothing on the course really made any sense until about the fourth day when it started coming together. Wouldn't say that I understand it all now though but I can't go back and change my paper so why worry.

For anyone thinking of doing it, it's not a bad course but unless you're an officer or maybe an FS/WO working at IPT level I'd say it has very little relevance to you in an airforce setting.

I'm not convinced there's a need to do the lead in course either but perhaps I can only say for sure when my exam results turn up (quite how it takes 2-3 weeks to mark a paper which is fed into a computer and done automatically is beyond me.

Passed the PRINCE2 Practitioner Exam

Passed the PRINCE2 Practitioner Exam

As the title says, today I was informed that I have Passed the PRINCE2 Practitioner Exam.:PDT_Xtremez_30:

Woohoo!!! After all that work it was worth it. Now all I have to do is find an employer willing to teach me how it's actually done and pay me loads at the same time!!

I was mainly posting to say that I sat the exam on 07 Sep 07 and it has taken one day short of 4 weeks to receive the result, not the 3-4 months those sitting the old written style exam had to wait so it's good news all round.

Oh, and they only tell you pass or fail. You don't get informed of the percentage so I am assuming mine was 50% as anything else would have been wasted effort!:PDT_Xtremez_42:

Off for a beer soon to celebrate.

Prost!

Good skills Edzar, well done!

Congrats Edzar. Still a long time to wait given it'sd a computer marked paper. Like you said though it's quicker than the old way. Guess I won't be getting my results this week then.

OK - So i've got 12 months left and on more ELC to go what do you think is a good course to go on?

What have you done already?

Remember you can use them up to 10 years after you get out and that the money is going up to £2000 in Apr 08 (if you qualify)

For those who have just passed Prince2 Practitioner exams, congrats

If you are leaving, and have little or no experience do not panic, I know people who have walked out to £300 a day on contract (11 months) which will give you the experience to get more work.:PDT_Xtremez_30:

hope this helps a bit
