Ready to use an ELC? - PRINCE2 fits well

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
I've not heard of AMP but I've heard of APMP. I couldn't really get a straight answer from the training provider all I got was that it's a great course. Apparently, Prince2 is about the project should be structured and carried out and APMP is about how you get the indiviuald stages done. How accurate a description that is I can't really say.

What about doing the course Bitburger mentioned, the Diploma in Engineering Management with Project Management? Or is it specifically project management you ant to get into? If it's project management you want to do you might find it useful to do a job search and see what qualification they're asking for. That may give you some pointers as to what alternatives there are to Prince2.

The only thing I'd say about the Diploma course is that it's 4 weeks long so unless you're on resettlement you're unlikeliy to get that much time off work I suspect.

I’ve spoken to Bitt'y just after he did his course and you’re right I think I will have to analyse me needs. I have a degree and done some Maint’ planning but would like exposure to some sort of PM as part of a professional development program.

The university that I did my degree has started pushing an MSc in Professional Engineering - the inn’s and out of which I have Yet to find out about - But it is to do with gaining professional status at CEng which in my mind is my end goal ( also HERE) - Saying all that It costs lots so i was thinking of joining a company that helps its employees with professional development and get them to pay for that.

The APMP (my mistake well spotted) did look like a good stepping stone it was explained to me as the learning of the different types of building blocks within PM and likewise P2 being a method of using these blocks – (that said if P2 is how the MoD work steer clear! Or conversely P2 should take its name away from the MoD)

With me leaving in a year and resettlement as well as this amount of cash available it still leaves my wondering what to do. (I have thought of going to Rolls Royce, Airbus, British Energy and Network Rail amongst others)

Do you know about the change to resettlement allownces happeining in April next year? If not here's the rough jist of things.

At the moment you get £534 towards your courses and then get travel and subsistence on top of that. From April 08 you get £1068 for your course fees and no travel and subsistence. Did you know that you can't use ELC and resettlement money for the same course?

Resettlement opportunities just got a whole lot worse or a whole lot more expensive.

If you've done a degree there's probably little point in you doing the diploma is there. Have you looked at the courses run at Aldershot? They do a three week project management course which combines P2 and APMP for about £2k all in.

The Project management Course at Aldershot, as you say, combines APMP and PRINCE 2 Foundation and Practitioner courses and exams. These are at Level 4.

Details can be found in the Quest magazine in the orange pages near rhe back under the RTC Aldershot courses. The dates are on one page and a course description on the right.

Also http://www.ctp.org.uk/ctp/servicele...ction=details&id=10096&location=RTC Aldershot

Here you can download a PDF File of the courses descriptions ( http://www.ctp.org.uk/assets/x/50943) and look at page 37 for the details.

But be warned, the costs are high and there will be a MASSIVE amount of pre-course work and study if doing those together. Having just completed PRINCE 2 I certainly would not want to be studying anything else at the same time, unless you can live and study for 3 weeks with no sleep and no alcohol!!

I would be tempted to try and do PRINCE 2 on it's own using an ELC to fund most of it.

Hope this helps:PDT_Xtremez_14:

Thanks I'll look into this, sounds like a massive under taking though - and a bit concerned about the no alcohol!!

If you follow this link here and search for management/aldershot/next 6 months it takes you to the course page where you'll see the next course is in Jan 07. There'll be an extra place on it when I cancel mine this morning.

Edzar might have a point about the pre-course reading especially if the RTC are as lax at sending out the books as a certain station education centre weas with mine. Having said that I only read about a 3rd of what I should have before I went on Prince2 and I didn't get any of that until about the 4th day of the course because I had absolutely no comprehension of Prince.

If you understand what it's about then you shouldn't find piecing it together too hard. As for APMP I'm afraid I can't offer any advice there.

Bristol Management Centre also do a lot of project managment courses so give them a google and give your resettlement advisor a prod too, it's their job to help you find the right course and they may have more ideas than us.

Now you have said Bristol Management centre - I have a mate who left a year ago and went there i'll get hold of him and ask him how he got on. - thanks

Has your PRINCE2 certificate come through yet? I did the course in September and still there's no sign of it. Some sort of backlog aparently.

Just reporting in to any fellow re-settlers out there

I've just taken advantage of one of the 'new range' of management courses recently added to the Career Transition Partnerships re-settlement list.

I did a PRINCE2 course (Foundation & Practitioner) which have now become available at the 03 principal (regional?) Naval Dockyards of Pompey, Guz & Rosyth (Portsmouth, Devonport & Some place in Scotland that has a permanent green glow)

I used one of my Enhanced Learning Credits to 'pay for the 950 squid course' which then in reality only cost me in 190 quid in real terms - (personal contribution)

The whole affair was pretty painless and quite 'hands off/hands free' once you've sent your cheque in - they do like lots of notice though, 4 weeks plus.

The course was delivered by a professional Civvy instructor who turned up and who was absolute mustard - I was very impressed

Just a shame the course was a complete Harold B@sT*% though - absolute nails, if you've not played with 'proper management' speak before - 3 hrs homework, reading & practice exam every night Ffs!

Seems like a got a good deal there friend. I paid something in the region of £2,600. I can’t complain though, whatever was to happen my Prince2 certification was guaranteed. I did it with Firebrand Training who are currently allowing students to take a free practise exam sheet that resembles the real exam:- cool stuff!
