Retention.....

TG15 is the one that's full of professionally qualified, intelligent, articulate, attractive and modest personnel.

OK I'll believe you.....Never interested in any trade groups except 1&2 though as they are the ones that matter......ALL the rest are ancillary.

Not quite true

Not quite true

But surely the "brightest" joined as techies in the first place ?

No only the brightest people who want to be a techie join as a techie in the first place.

Tashy, people with an interest in making it worthwhile staying in have contributed greatly to this thread. You know full well that if your number had come up in the promotion lottery you would still be in. So how about adding something worth reading rather than try to drag it down to the same old - and frankly boring - arguments?

This thread is well off topic already....

If empowerment is removed and people are ranked for their responsibility then we as a a technical force would have a greater proportion of higher ranks without the need to have tiff or a myriad of other overly complicated streams to compensate for the years of under investment and under ranking.

There are big issues being discussed here that deserve their own thread and I'll start one off in a mo.

It wouldn't be called an artificer scheme for non-techies, but some form of accelerated promotion for the brightest could be worth thinking about. I'm still not sure how it would work in practice - a good engineer/chef/scribbly does not necessarily make a good leader or manager.

You've missed the point and you need to re-read my earlier post:

There can only be an scheme for advanced promotion where there is first a need for a major leap in technical skills in a certain field

There is a clear need for advanced technical skills in TG 1 & 2, for example certain work service software teams do, elements of EW, certain NDT stuff, posts on the Defence Intelligence Staff etc. Demonstrate an equivalent need for a whole raft of people in say Pers Admin and you might have a case for accelerated promotion scheme. Personally I just don't believe it exists, or that where it does they use Pers Admin officers to fill the most demanding and challenging roles, which may have something to do with your reasons for jumping ship and going to the dark side.

Well I don't think Air Marshall Lean air skate farquar the third gives a sh@t what skills his blokes have as long as his lords and masters at BAe are running f@cking everything. BAe want a box in, box out, non-techy air force that is constantly deployed so they can run everything back home for huge profits. As long as they have enough guys at the frontline they will continue to cut back and sell everything off until fu@king Norman the toilet cleaner from the little Chef can get a job pumping oil and marshalling.

What a top rant - nice one::D:and possibly fairly factual

Think you'll find he only made it to Gp Capt before defecting to BAE.....

However I find the rest of your post to be factually accurate.::D:

Its been ages since I last took a look here, due to working here and in Europe. this thread has a massive following and from what I have seen on my side of the fence, any retention incentives that are going on are just going to fall on deaf ears. In the last two months more than 3/4's of the new lads we have arrriving are all recent ex Navy and Airforce. One lad told me he was offerd promotion if he stayed in and he just told them to ram it where the sun don't shine. Another lad even got a phone call when he was on terminal leave, to see if you would conisider coming back before his leave expired. Folks I have talked to have been promised everything, from a choice of posting to promotion. But they all turned round and given the two fingerd salute. What does that really say about retention. I had to laugh the other day, we all said how much of a cock up JPA was and that there was going to be a massive problem with recruiting and holding onto admin folks. I have never seen so much advertising for Adminers in the blokes mags that I have read recently. It's all very glossy and paints a picture of something great but does it really give a true picture of what life is really like, once you sign your name on the dotted line. I have even seen adverts for the Airforce, once left on channel four during the late hours, being now shown all the time on ITV and other channels. This paints a picture to me that the Airforce is indeed in the grip of a retention problem/crisis. Is it going to get any better? If I see more folks walking through my companies front door I guess not.:S

It would be useful if somebody at RTS could comment on how many are coming through the door to actually how many we are forcasting that we need...You don't have to actually quote figures...something like just right/not enough etc etc would do although figures would be nice...

It just seems as though this information is buried rather deeply under a pile of seasonally adjusted, ethnically altered and rounded up stats showing how well things are going while the rest of us are scratching our heads wondering why everthing is so utterly shocking at the sharper end of things...

Well its does not suprise me one bit that there are retention problems, I left nearly 2 years ago because of being F****d around by PMA, saw where it was going with JPA and expenses and got so down hearted seeing hard working personnel being asked to do more and more with less and less for peanuts so I put my money where my mouth was and jumped ship. I now work for Shell offshore love every minute off it and get paid 20K yes 20K more than I did as a chief, very little responsibility, no F6000s etc etc and I know when I will be home!! I see more of the family now than I did for 23 years. Don't get me wrong I loved my time in the job and certain aspects of it I really do miss, mainly the people and the challenges but I do not regret for one moment leaving, and until the overpaid, under perfoming oiks at the top realise how lucky they are to have such dedicated people working for them and treat them accordingly then I'm afraid it will only get worse.

Bully

If someone is not willing to come out with a straight forward figure but tries to use other stats (as you mention) to explain it then you know that the actual true figure has got to be bad.

The silence is deafening....

Don't worry, according to the peoples campaign, they love us all and we are all going to be treated like kings and queens from this day forth.

Hmm, an entire airforce of pigs has just flown over.

Not sure of actual figures but it is around the 3500 mark this year which includes over 800 extras in the last few months, instructor numbers have been pushed up to help with the surge, we are currently taking trades with no trade courses planned for a while just to get them in the door, then they wait for a while on ADF. 1st time pass rates remain good which is a testament to the fine instructors we have...
