Good god Spanners if you're going to do the mid life crisis thing do it properly and at least go soft top...lol :PDT_Xtremez_15:

PS if you go down the VW route there's a nice mettallic blue one bimbling round Elgin at the mo. :PDT_Xtremez_39:

Welshjpc, Alfa Mito, I’ll have to have a look at that one, not sure about reliability with the Alfa though.
Cheers

Not so much a problem nowadays. The eyetyes have progressed to real wiring and welding techniques in the last few years yet the old stigma is still there about them being old rustbuckets. They drive well, look even better and you'll have something different to the masses with their boring-mobiles.

Treat yourself!

p.s. yes, I own an alfa so may be a little biased.

RHRAM, soft top cars are for girls and hairdressers! I’ve seen the blue one around Elgin and a lime green one, which is not so nice.

Mil Muscle, not sure about the Focus RS, might have a look though.

Welshjpc, I’ve had a look at the Alfa, now that is nice.

New shape Impreza WRX is a good car (on offer at the price of the original WRX at the moment as it's the 20th anniversary of the model), nice comfy interior and an engine that just keeps going and it's a hatchback now since Subaru turned to the dark side and copied the french. If it doesn't have to be brand new there's some good deals on Impreza's and Evo's out there at the moment. One hting though if you want fuel economy look somewhere else, but they are a great drivers cars.

I say go retro get a mk 2 golf gti :D and maybe drop a vr6 engine in... great fun

If you don't fancy spending 25k on the new Focus RS then why not the ST? Can get a brand spanking new one for 16k with mil discount, (ST-3, top spec), or a nearly new for 12/13k plus. Bear in mind you are getting a 21/22k car.

Very nice cars, reliable (Volvo T5 engine), quick, fun to drive and nice looking (not the Orange though!). Very practical also. Available with various toys if you want them.

Mk2 Golf GTI, not really what I'm after, want something modern.

Focus ST, not too sure about that one, I will bear it in mind, same with the Impreza WRX, I like it, but not sure that it's the car for me.

And unless it's one hell of a Fanny magnet the girls won't be in it and it's a good point that your days at the hairdresser are long gone so I totally understand your stance there. What about the Volvo V50 T5. That's nicely understated although it may be a little staid looking.

if you've never been in a scooby and want to see what one's like pm me and we'll sort something out. Mines 4 years old but it should give ya a good idea what a scooby can do.

One of my mates had one, he’d always wanted a T5 but ended up only keeping it for a few months, he said it was very expensive to run and that it shattered his illusion of what he thought the car was like. So, the T5, not for me.
As for the girls, well, not been a problem of late!

Have you looked at Renault Megane Sport? I think they're pretty nice cars. Especially the 225 F1 Edition, I think they're priced similar to lots of the other cars that have been suggested.

As a bonus it's French so as it gets older the weight reductions from bits falling off make it quicker!

If you are after a more mature hot hatch then go for the Focus ST. Always comes out top compared with Civic Type-R, Renaultsport etc.

Can be remapped for more performance as well.

Sorry but the Megane R26 always wins the round ups i've read, and any turbo car can be re-mapped, not just the focus. As an aside have you looked at the new megane coupe? Its a good looking thing and they seem to have fixed some of the percieved quality issues with the older car. The new TT is essentially the same car as the 'Roc and looks better IMO and some of the higher powered versions have been earning rave reviews in EVO etc.

If you're serious about the 'Roc I'd probably have to agree with several others earlier comments and just go for a 3 door Golf Gti. I personally don't think the 'Roc looks coupe enough. It just looks like a slighty squished golf, which I suppose is what it is.

I've got the Renault brochures at home and yes I do like the Megane Sport and the R26, these are defiantly on the short list.

For gods sake Spanners, how dare you even think of buying a french cheese eating surrender monkey car!!!:(

For that statement the offer of a spin in the scooby is now withdrawn!

:PDT_Xtremez_14:

Not driven an R26.R then I take it? Because despite it being front wheel drive and down in power by about 60bhp on an Sti Scooby it will spank its arrse. The car is that good believe me.

I'm not the only person who thinks so, I would probably look at the normal R26 myself as the R is a bit too harcore. I could imagine a trip to Dr Grays would be needed if I were to attempt to drive down Stotfield road in it.

Still french cheese eating surrender monkey ****e though. Is it fast in reverse?

actually i have driven one and personnaly i'll stick with the scooby. Before it begins i'm not biased towards the scoob i've only had it since december, before that i had a 3 series beemer that was tuned and handled like a dream. Yes the french shed is good but to me the scooby feels more planted and the power was more useable. Personnaly iIwould avoid Dr Grays and either head straight for the Raighmore in Inverness or go directly to A&R in Aberdeen if you hit a bumpy road but thats just cos my ex-wife works there. The scooby soaks up the bumps when the french thing would crash over them.
I've read evo since it came out and agree with alot of what they say but did question some of what they said about the R26R. Then again my scooby isn't the new hatchback which if you ask most scooby owners is more than a bit of a let down. The R26R needs computers and sensors and traction control to keep it on the road where the scooby uses grip and the driver's right foot! (no traction control here). Personnaly i've blown a Merc CL55 into the weeds on the Forres - Grantown road so it's as much down to who's behind the wheel (either he was a muppet and i'm the stig or it's somewhere inbetween, i know where my money is cos my name ain't stig!) as it is the car. At the end of the day i've never got close to the limits of my car if i did i'd loose my licence, it's down to what you want from your car.
