Scirocco or Civic?

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
Imprezas and Meganes still don't look as good as the MiTo though. Nor have that "ooh" factor. Unless you're a 16 year old boy racer with a max power fixation.

Nah, i'm slightly older than 16 (more than double that number) and can't remember the last time i read Max Power. The scooby has plenty of ooh factor when you hear the turbo spin up. I have to say i don'y like the way the megane looks, never have but it is a decent drive.

The MiTo is generally considered to look a bit strange the attempt to make a small hatch look like an 8C hasn't met with much enthusiasm from most of the motoring press. The electric power steering and unsettled ride mean the car hasn't been earning great reviews due to how it drives either. The Brera and GT on the other hand both drive well and do look stunning.

The MiTo is just a more expensive fiat 500 after all, And the Arbarth version of that car drives much better than its Alfa badged contemparies.

Are you after a track tool or a fast, everyday car with some practicality?

If it's the second, test drive a Focus ST. You may be suprised.

It’s a quick everyday car that I’m after, I will have a look at the ST, but not sure about it, though being a Ford, it should be reliable.
As for the MiTo, having read the brochure, not too impressed with the figures, but, never say never.

At work tonight, someone suggested a Nissan 350Z, I've had a look on the internet, but not driven one or seen it close up, anyone had any experience? I like the hard-top, not so keen on the soft-top.
Had a wee trip in a Megane 225 tonight, quite impressed, actually, very impressed, very nice.

Due to having too many kids, my 2.5l 24v V6 Alfa 156 (196-ishBHP) can be yours for £1100. People carrier needed :PDT_Xtremez_09:

I've owned 2 brand spanker focus STs and once you put your foot down then you will be sold by the engine note. lets be honest mate there are alot of cars out there on the military discount scheme and VW or Honda aren't on it for tax paid discount. I paid around 15K for both my ST2s and the type-r GT is over £19K, the 'ROC????? is well over 20K I'd imagine and there definitely isn't 3-6 thousand pounds worth of a car more than the ST. I now have a 09 plate Mazda 6 Tamura which I got 20% discount on through a Mazda main dealer, it looks the part and is very impressive for £13.4k. The RS is out now and is the only Ford production car not to be offered on the military scheme, so you will pay atleast £25749 and will have to wait a long time for it to be built. the Megane R26 in liquid yellow was also on my list but was £1200for the paint and I didnt want another colour so that fell through, renault are alos another major discounter of cars to us and the new megane GT which looks smart will be out at the back end of summer, worth a look at 250BHP and will be on discount. All in all you pay for the badge on the Scirocco but it does look the part, don't get the civic, I had the old model and test drove the new shape, it's a step back by honda and not forward, good luck in finding the right car for you.

A lot of people are mentioning the ST, something I will look at, sounds promising. I’ve pretty much ruled out the Civic, not had many positive reports on them, maybe an older Civic Type R could be an option. I was at the Renault dealer at the weekend, he mentioned the GT, said it will out towards the end of the summer, had a look at a similar model, they look very nice, not sure about the silver trim below the headlights though. As for the R26, don’t think so, bit too much in your face for me.
So, the Scirocco is still a runner, along with a 350Z and an ST, glad I’ve got a while to make my mind up!
Cheers

Spanners, have you checked with your insurance company as to what your premium would be with your choice of new car/s? My insurance was nice and sensible but for reasons best left to them it's shot up over £500 and they've just asked for £1025. A quick search on the net can get that to under £420 but check on the insurance before you buy. I only paid £150 extra for the last 6 months (much more and i probably wouldn't have bought the car) that i've had the car over what it was for my beemer.
Nearly needed the meat wagon to cart me off with a heart attack when i read that one this morning.

Good point mate, I have thought about it, but not done anything about it yet, I’m on leave in 2 weeks and I’m going to pay a visit to H&R in Elgin with a list of cars and see what quotes they come out with, as you say, this could help me decide. For the record, my points come off in September (4 years since caught speeding) and full no claims and 40 years old, so hopefully, it won’t be too high.
PS, the Scooby is still an option.

Always worth a call or visit to the insurance company. Mine said it was cos i'd got 3 points for speeding in January but that increase is taking the p!$$. I'll just move to another company, easy done. Scooby's always an option.

I've just had a quick glance through the posts and didn't see the one main factor that put me off a Type-R...I'm 6'3 and for love nor money, I couldn't find a good seating position whilst driving the thing thus meaning I couldn't see jack s**t behind me because of the 2-piece rear window design and had a really torrid time trying to see out of the thing in the first place because of the super thick frame, so pulling out of junctions was pot luck and reversing was done purely by using mirrors and guessing where the rear of the car was in relation to surrounding objects...

Also, I'm of 'a larger frame' and no, I'm not fat! But I sat 'on' the seat rather that 'in' it, if that makes sense.

One good point though, I did like the dashboard and the driver's 'cockpit' styled set-up, everything was well within reach and I barely had to move my arm to change gear.

Oh and Delboy is right about the engine note of the ST.

Did you get your ST remapped Delboy? Think I know you.

hey mate, yeah got it remapped its a doddle to do. Also ford have an upgrade for the ST which is warranty backed for the 3 years and puts the car upto 260 BHP, its called the mountune performance upgrade and costs around a grand to get done, well worth it for the cost of a ST and the extra grand, would pee all over the competitors at a fraction of the price. Do it spanners, get the ST, I'm sad to see mine go.

JDM Civic!!!!!!!!!!

JDM Civic!!!!!!!!!!

If the only thing thap put you off the civic was the rear view and head room have you thought about the JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) civic type R. It's more like a normal car with a boot and decent room inside it's a saloon not a hatch, same engine and interior. Check out some of the importers web sites, it's a good car, easy to service at any honda dealer and rarer than an intelligent armourer!

Fu Fu, I'm not gonna lie to you, that doth look v nice!:PDT_Xtremez_27:

Unfortunately, after testing said Type-R, ST-3 and an Astra VXR(just for comparison, you see...) I was denied the dream by the evil money situation and just couldn't jusify the expenditure!! :S But one day "She will be mine, oh yes, she will be mine..."

They are nice i think i've only ever seen one on the road and it did look damn good. Beyond me why it's not on sale here, Subaru have done the same thing with the new Impreza there's a great looking saloon available and all they give us is the new hatchback. Knobbers

Beats me!! Maybe they don't like giving us all their best outputs in case our 'shed based boffins' get hold of them and do magical things with them that the Japs would never think of!!:PDT_Xtremez_26:
