Yes it did....

Prior to that they used what was termed the red road generator which was a giant cardex style old school supercomputer that randonmly generated the letter.

We 'pathfinders,' who were poroud to be the research subjects so you young 'uns could rest safely in your beds with a shiny new number, can pass the baton onwards to less spirited subjects, such as yourself.

815 being the start of the service number all RAF Apprentices were given to distinguish them from the rest of the dross.

Would that be the same ex-Cosford Apps Cpl's that I as a new LAC fairy had to supervise on the Shacks whenever
they were shown round so as to prevent them from playing with the switches etc.?
