Ref Falklands is it not just time that we removed it from being a detachable site and give it the same status as say Akrotiri. I for one would be quite happy to go on a overseas tour to MPA for 3 years as long as provision was made for quarters and schooling etc. At the end of the day it will be a lot better standard of living than some of the sh1tholes that we call stations in the UK.

God, no. Mrs TBJ hated Belgium - I can't imagine what she'd think to 3 years living in Stanley. Shiny_Rob is right - the standard of health and medical care is better (for us) in the Falklands than in the UK so there is no reason most of the twisted socks can't go. Bosnia was the same at the end.

Kernow: you know as well as I do the politics of using people in NATO appointments for national commitments. It has been done, particularly with MTDs, but J1 get really upset about it.

Hey it's just a suggestion and a damn good one at that. Lets start with those sitting in the greasy who are from J1.

There needs to be a fundamental review of which posts are DWR exempt. We have less people now, but more OOA/FI posts. Something needs to be done. In regard to the FI, I concur with the majority opinion; the medical facilities are as good as, if not better than, the majority of units in the UK. And they are fully manned. There is no reason why some downgraded pers should not be sent down here. As an aside, I remember using the downgraded pers for UC in the UK when the MES was not an issue (MOD, Thames House etc).

It would also help if we sent the guys and girls that are occupying NATO posts as well!

I agree, I would gladly go OOA now, I'm due back to the UK in 2009 having done my last OOA in 2003 so I know I will get pinged as soon as I return. I'd rather volunteer to go somewhere hospitable now than go somewhere unpleasant for Xmas 2009.

As for spending a year in the Falklands I would gladly go (so would the wife). My ex-boss from here is currently down there with his family and they all love it.

Send the sickies to Ul Udeid, Bahrain or Oman, the medical facilities are great in those place as well. Lots of the staff in the hospitals in those countries are Brits as well.

I thought those in the deed had to be fit to fight and could be called forward further if the sh1t hit, which would surely mean that the sickies ain't fit to go regardless of how good the med facilities are?

I standby to be corrected, but as far as I'm aware that hasn't happened yet and thus isn't likely to happen. Moreover, the Army would really have to be in the dwang to consider seeking help from RAF stackers, clerks, drivers, chefs etc. If the medically downgraded can sit at a desk in the UK why can't they sit at a desk somewhere reasonably benign like Bahrain?

Transparency

Transparency

Why do we not have transparency when it comes to OOA? A nice big long list showing peoples dates.....gee that would make interesting reading don't you think?

At the very least I think we deserve details from our Career Managers of the TRT for each rank. We all know it can change depending on circumstances and other things....I just reckon we deserve some transparency. It may even help stop all the rumours concerning the sometimes emotive issue of OOA.

Just a thought, will probably never happen, and we will continue to be mushrooms......

I know a couple of wobbly oranges who won't want that level of transparency!

In all seriousness, the career managers are prevented from making that kind of information public by the Data Protection Act. Some CMs are willing to give indications of Turn Round Times, others work according to the principle that they can't give accurate forecasts because things change too often and too quickly. I can understand that - just over a year ago I was told by the CM that I was safe until Aug 07; I flew out to Bosnia in Nov 06.

I have no complaints. I phoned the CM, was given a timescale, and it came to pass it was accurate. I then phoned agan and asked to be brought forward, and I was. However we all know that there can never, on the whole, be an accurate list given that there will be falldowns, downgrades, unforeseen taskings, training failures etc etc. The best a CM can offer is a reasonable guesstimate!

PVR rates and DWR TRT can be found here for those on DII

http://stc/sites/cospers/peoplepicture/Baseline Data/Forms/AllItems.aspx

When PMA/Manning move from the IT stone age at Innsworth to the registryless High Wycombe, virtually all their documents will be electronic and open to access by all on DII in most cases (Dossiers will be electronic - although not accessible by everyone of course). FOI ain't great! Transparency is heading towards PMA/Manning like a speeding train whether they like it or not. DPA 98 only covers personal details, so you can't say WO "insert name" last went OOA to "insert det name" in 1980. You can publish the DWR TRT and PVR waiting times as above.
