The longest running Sqn disbands

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
Formed 31st Jan 1914 at South Farnbourgh, First aircraft Farman MF7 'Longhorn' (serial No 370) and Royal Aircraft Factory BE2 (Serial No 206).

I thought 1 Sqn was the oldest??

1 Sqn;
Formed from No 1 Airship Company of the Air Battalion on 13 May 1912.

6 Sqn;
Formed on 31 January 1914, again at Farnborough

ILLKC was talking about the longest RUNNING.

As far as I know, 6 squadron is the only squadron thats never been disbanded?

Am I right?

On 13 January 1969, it was reduced to cadre and returned to the UK, the first time it had operated from there since 1914; where on 7 May 1969 its badge and standard were handed over to a new No 6 Squadron which had been in formation as a Phantom unit at Coningsby in the tactical reconnaissance and ground attack role. However, on 1 July 1974, No 6 (Designate) Squadron began forming at Lossiemouth as a Jaguar unit and on 30 September 1974 the Phantom unit was disbanded with the squadron number-plate being transferred to the Jaguar unit. In November 1974 the new No 6 Squadron moved south to RAF Coltishall

Yes No 1 Sqn were the first RFC Sqn (though 2 Sqn were the first to be solely equipped with heavier than air aircraft).

6 Sqn have never officially disbanded since formation (though they have had designate squadrons running for the conversion to Phantoms from the Canberra and from the Tomb to the Jag). 1 Sqn have been officially disbanded a couple of times I do believe (with no designate squadron to hold the standards and silverware).

Thank-you for that answer:PDT_Xtremez_30:

sad times, if this were some army regiment there would be questions in parliment and protests in whitehall. Typically the RAF high command forego any sort of history / tradition and crush it under the jackboot of lean / options for change/ front line last... :PDT_Xtremez_32:

Well said...
but lets look at it from a different point of view...
Do we, the RAF/Brit Mil really need a cost effective bomb delivery platform in this day and age??
I mean, what would they be used for??
Its not like we could have deployed them to the Stan and used them in Taleban attacks!!!!!

exactly, the Jags with their tiald / paveway combo could have taken some of the workload off of the harriers

Not really Chris, look at all those pongo Regt's that merged not so long ago.

Spent 4 happy years on 6, sad times, hope they stand up again soon.

The rumour machine is rife that there might be a new Merlin Sqn soon seeing as 28 Sqn would have , with the extra 6 coming, by next year, 28 aircraft!
Any thoughts on assigning a number to it?

I think there are bigger things to get worked up about than a Sqn number being disbanded. The spirit of the men lives on in other places, what difference does it make to the number?

The boys (and girls) of the armed forces are being shafted for all the wrong reasons, and some cry foul over a sqn disbandment. Get some perspective, please
