Don't you mean 65 years?

1st Feb, 1942, when the Royal Air Force Regiment was formed. Unless you know something different.

I think he means they were formed from a ''fore-father unit'', having originally been formed at Heliopolis as No 2 Armoured Car Company, RAF ground units, on 7 April 1922 for service in Transjordan.
Much like 1 Sqn and 201 Sqns were forn from the RFC and RNAS

Don't know whether it is the oldest serving Sqn, however, 2 Sqn RAF Regt celebrated its 85th Anniversary of continuous Service on 22 April this year.

True the Unit has never been physically disbanded from formation as 2nd Armoured Car Sqn in 1922, but on the formation of the RAF Regiment it was not numbered 2 Sqn RAF Regiment, but 2702 Sqn and did not get the 2 Sqn designation back until 1947.

Granted, unfortunately the Sqn was renamed 2702 Sqn on 3 Oct 46 and then renamed II Sqn RAF Regt on 25 Feb 47 after significant pressure from Sqn members and veterans. Whilst the number changed for just under 5 months, the manpower and establishment remained unchanged.

The same Mik that did a stint on 6 before, fairy? did lots of sqn wall paintings in gioia, split etc? excellent work :PDT_Xtremez_28:

Dunno about Split, but Mik left his mark in Deci, Gioia, Incirlik, Colt and one or two more place I suspect.
He was my Cpl when I was on 6, good bloke as well.

The Regiment in the whole are not a Sqn, which I think was what Tin Basher was asking.

Quite right MAINJAFAD I was referring to flying squadrons. This is not meant as a slight on the RAF Regiment and it's own proud history.

doh yes not 'split' thats my bad, yeah he was a cpl when i was on 6 too. During the time of slapper, roge C, rob h, daz j, mo back etc. I remember some fine paintings he did in Gioia and deci.

Loss of squadron and unit identity is one of the reasons everything is going down the pan. Its called Esprit De Corps mate.

Not really sure that I agree with you there mate.

I am serving in the RAF and feel a definite esprit de corps, i am proud of what i do and of those around me.

However i have never belonged to a squadron in 15 years and never will do, so why should i feel the way you do.

Coppers, slammers, medics, scopies, air traggic, fire crew, admin, chefs, PTI's and many others dont belong to squadrons, in fact most of the air force doesnt. so does it really make that much difference?

But if you do go OOA you are part of something -ie Security Sqn, TISWAS or Tac Comms and despite what you think of where you work there is still some pride in what you do and where you work- On a Sqn (flying) you give your loyalty to it and who you work with....... The RAF is trying to push the Ethos thing hard, then trying to remove the sense of belonging from everyone except the aircrew.

But if you do go OOA you are part of something

Yes, I was part of the fire service. We dont have a tactical wing, we dont go anywhere as a formed unit, and we are never truly embedded within any wider sqn or other structure.

Somebody told me I was part of 904 EAW. however the only members of 904 EAW at my location were firefighters. and the only time I met someone else from the EAW was when I checked in for my fial flight home. Not much espirit de corps there then!

Can see your point...........................good volleyball team though:)
