Base Closure Annoucement

Anyone heard any more speculation/information on when it's rumoured to be? It seemed to be the generally held belief that it would be 'after the Scottish elections', but I haven't seen anything that mentions a specific date.

Is it now a straight fight between Lossie and Leuchars, and possibly one other?

Economic Point

Economic Point

I note that it has been pointed out that it would be easier for the economy in North East Fife to recover if Leuchars closes than that in Moray if Lossiemouth went. Beg to differ alongside NE Fife is Levenmouth to the South and over the Tay Dundee city. Both these areas need for investment means they must come before Leuchars area for economic input. In Methil you can get a three bedroom semi-detached house for less than £ 60,000 with nothing wrong with it or the area to give you an idea of the problem . Many of the jobs in particular types of skilled ones only exist in rural areas due to a military presence. If it goes then they go ,you cannot distort the civil economy for social reasons. The jobs in the civil sector are in Urban areas therefore there they must stay and as a result as happened down at Binbrook if the military leave must be considered a total loss. As Moray has no large urban area with priority claim nearby and a skilled workforce it is easier to recover the local economy. Look at the joint plans for Kinloss

Look on a map: within 70 miles of Leuchars there are many major towns/cities - Dundee, Perth, Stirling, Edinburgh, Glasgow and other large towns besides. What is there up at ISL/ISK? Inverness and Aberdeen, that's it! I suggest that the 'skilled workforce' should have better luck in finding other work 'locally' (within 70 miles, ABN is local to ISL!) at Leuchars whereas up north it would be a completely different picture. Anyway there would appear to be so many variables at the moment, as pointed out by yourself, that only time will tell.
