Guys & Girls,
Quote from the Defense intranet, Please take note!

"Any speculation about what might happen or the way our people may be treated could be genuinely dangerous and we would urge refrain from such speculation whilst the Government conducts its urgent discussions with the Iranian authorities."

Those poor guys- hope they get back safe. Their families must be having kittens!

Are they afraid the Iranian Defence Attache in London reads Forums!!. Another illegal detention, full stop!. Iran will milk this with big dirty grins on their faces.

Sorry for the advanced paranoia here but.....

Seems a bit convenient, we (for we read Bush and cronies as that now appears to include all British military resources) need an excuse for the international powers that be to let us invade....

(Sorry TLS to your colleague but...!)

You're not actually implying that these blokes were actually sent across deliberately just to kick off an incident are you? Do you line your hat with tinfol? That is DEEPLY paranoid!!:PDT_Xtremez_15:

I personally don't think it is deliberate, with all the CIA and similar bods the Spams must have out there, they could have managed something more subtle.

IMHO this is just the Iranians pushing Bush and Bliar to see how hard they push back. It is fairly risk free because it it starts to get hairy they can hand the guys back and claim it was a 'misunderstanding'.

I have to agree to with TLS, a case for the tin foil hat wearers if anyone thinks that was the reason behind the detentions.

The Iran thing was part of my post as an OR but got interuppted by that virus thingy they have round here....!

Fighting Iran

Fighting Iran

The Iranains like playing these games and have done so before. Our guys will have to go on TV and state they are "Blairs puppies and have been bad boys", and all the Arab Satilite stations will have a field day!!

As for fighting Iran, do so at your peril. The Iraqi's know how hard it is to fight that lot and believe me, the Yanks wouldn't like to face it after their experience of the last 4 years. It would make what they have faced so far, look like a holiday!

True...The only effective way to hurt Iran would be to stop buying their oil...They'd be living in caves within a year.

Yeah, the food for oil programme did wonders to curb Saddam's aggressive posturing and oppression of the Kurds and Marsh Arabs.

Whether the sailors/marines were actually in Iranian waters or not, whether they strayed because of faulty navigation or were involved in some kind of covert operation, the diplomats will have to tread very carefully if we are to avoid this escalating into something much bigger.

Right now all we can do is wait and see what Iran want in exchange for the return of our people.

Publicity is most certainly a big part of it, but what else? Speculation at this point is very dangerous, but there are a few things that Iran would like to see happen, e.g., be allowed to continue with their nuclear programme without being hassled by us, or (more likely in my opinion) the immediate withdrawal of coalition forces from the Gulf region.

One thing I am quite sure of: no harm will come to the sailors and marines.
