Email your MP - Social Housing for Ex Servicemen

I agree that people should prepare for the future but more and more people today have been caught out by the governments blatant disregard to cap house prices so that the stupid prices your expected to pay today didn't put a fair majority of service leavers and low earners out of the bidding.

I may be cynical but as the government gets a cut of all house purchases it would not be in their best interests to cap prices...

Interesting entries by some. What about those service personnel that have been injured whilst carrying out their duty? If you have served in the forces, then you will know theres no big payouts.

There is a lot of information out there about housing and Housing Associations;
How long are their waiting lists?
What priority do service personnel and their families get?
What influence do these military information centres have on local authorities!

We pay our taxes, we contribute to our local communities, but we are unwelcome to live amongst them as civilians in social housing.

Thank you to those that have emailed their MPs. I hope this disgraceful legislation is changed in the near future.

Done and dusted.

Perhaps one way to help would be the ability to 'buy' a quarter and move the 'mortgage' to the new place on posting. If affordable housing was built for this purpose it would mean that price fluctuation between areas could be removed and young SAC Bloggs might have a chance to get on the housing ladder. It could possibly map across to the civilian services.

These days the most costly aspect of building a house is the land purchase...As long as you're not throwing up Beckingham Palace the house build costs are surprisingly low and they get lower the more you build together (ecomonies of scale)... I believe the MOD is still in the top 2 landowners in the British Isles so why not instead of selling it off like hot cakes to mercenary profiteering building conglomerates why not build on some of this land and provide affordable housing for ex-servicemen?

Agreed they may not be where you want them but if they're well within your range of affordability then it might be most welcome...Contract them so you can't instantly profiteer etc and even the government might come out of it smelling slightly less of sh*t for a change...

Well done to this Veteran soldier,:PDT_Xtremez_28: he confronts the Prime Minister. There will be more and more ex-service personnel going through the same in the future. The JSHAO, is a white elephant. set up to appease service personnel and their families, it's also an excuse for the Government and MoD. They can always say, "We have an organisation to give advice to service leavers". Advice isn't a mortgage or a roof over your head.

Thank you to all those that have emailed their MPs. Mr Liam Fox Shadow Defence Minister will sign on Monday. I'm also hoping Mr Mark Harper MP from the same department will also sign. We should make it to 100 signatories by the end of the month. However, we require to keep the pressure on. I have spoken with several national newspapers and TV stations and hope to get this issue to the next level soon. I have said on the armynet, we require to stand together, shoulder to shoulder, to push this issue to the top.

Thank you again.

The following link shows the new signatories of EDM 288. I have noticed Dr L Fox has not signed! If your MP said they would sign and have failed to, then please email them again with this link and ask them to sign.

We have managed to get another 10 names over the weekend, but we must keep up the pressure. This issue has never been addressed at such a high level, so we must ensure we see it through and force an amendment to the current legislation.

The following has just been emailed to me by my MPs PA. I'm not sure what paper will run the article. If we want to be treated as equals when it comes to housing. We have 105 MPs who have signed the EDM, but as you are aware, there are over 600 MPs in total.

As I have stated in the past - the most effective way to get MPs to sign an EDM is through their own constituents lobbying them. I'm sure we can do this, lets make them sign.

For Immediate Release

Nadine Dorries MP
Member of Parliament for Mid Bedfordshire

Over 100 MPs Sign Nadine’s Motion Calling For Action To Support Housing Needs Of The Armed Forces

Nadine Dorries MP – Member of Parliament for Mid Bedfordshire – has welcomed the support of over 100 Members of Parliament to a Parliamentary Motion tabled in her name calling for greater action to support the housing needs of former members of the armed forces. The Early Day Motion – (Number 288) titled Housing Provision For Former Members Of The United Kingdom’s Armed Forces – has received cross-party support from 105 MPs so far and calls for the government to review the current system for allocating housing to service veterans.

Nadine said, “I am delighted that over 100 MPs have already signed my parliamentary motion calling on the government to review the current system for allocating housing to service veterans. The support of over 100 MPs is a clear recognition that members of all political persuasions recognise the importance of this issue. In light of the significant contribution our armed forces make in defending our national interests, it is important that we recognise their commitment and professionalism in the service of our country both at home and abroad.”

“More needs to be done to ensure that local housing associations and the government are responsive to the housing needs of our servicemen and women and their families. I am calling for a review of current housing allocation policy in respect of establishing ‘local connections’ to ensure that former members of the armed forces are not discriminated against when applying for housing in the area in which they live.”

We now have 110 signatures. Good on you True Blue Jack try and get your mates to send a e-bluey letter to their MPs, that will hit the MPs harder. The support this site and all the others have shown has been great. All but one of the shadow defence minister have signed the edm.

HOUSING PROVISION FOR FORMER MEMBERS OF THE UNITED KINGDOM'S ARMED FORCES

That this House notes the important contribution made by Her Majesty's Armed Forces in defending the United Kingdom's national interests; recognises their commitment and professionalism in the service of the country both at home and abroad; further recognises that following the end of their careers in the armed forces many servicemen and women and their families face considerable difficulties in securing housing appropriate to their needs as civilians; and believes housing associations and the Government should review housing allocation policy in respect of establishing local connections to ensure that former members of the armed forces are not discriminated against when applying for housing.
