Email your MP - Social Housing for Ex Servicemen

Emailed my MP. Got a reply last week.

Only back bench MP's can sign an EDM. Ministers who hold cabinet posts, can support it, but not sign it.

My MP is a junior minister.

I managed to get a job and a house and mortgage without too much difficulty, why does anyone need extra hand holding?

A petition has also been started in support of the EDM. Your signature and support would be much appreciated. There are some serving members of the AF who are not able to start with house purchase and require all the help that can be provided.

Please go to the following link and add your signature

Sorry, I must be missing something here. Why are people not able to fend for themselves when leaving the RAF?

MPs on the oppostition can sign an EDM, the only ones that can refuse are those that hold a position of government that affects this area. So keep on asking those MPs that can sign.

firestorm, When did you get out? was you able bodied? The fact is many of our service personnel are leaving with disabilities due to service. I myself am leaving with a chronic spinal injury, due to the fact I maybe unable to get work I'm unable to get a mortgage. There is a bigger picture to this issue. The attitude of I'm on the bus ding, ding is not helpful.

I have been campaigning now for two years to get this issue addressed. In that time I have had an awful lot of emails and letters from service people and ex-service people that have or are suffering from this legislation. Why should those that serve their country be treated with disdain and discrimination by local authorities and housing associations.

I hope this answers your questions.

It did, thank you. Though I didn't have the "ding ding" attitude, I wanted an explanation. Now I see you are after support for disabled ex sevice bods it makes much more sense then the handholding for everyone it first seemed (to me).
Good luck.

Fire storm, this EDm isn't about getting Service personnel special treatment. If you read all the links you will see it is about getting us the same treatment as everyone else in the country, whether they have ever paid a days tax in their life or not. Even people who leave the Service as able bodied nowadays may have problems buying a house that is suitable for there needs. I already own a house so I'm fine but at the moment I live in a quarter due to posting that would cost about £250000. That's nearly 8 times my annual wage. It's always been more difficult to buy your own house in the RAF so some people have missed out. Why shouldn't the welfare system step in and help out these people like it was designed to do, and offer them affordable rents?

I'm Ok with the extra help for the disabled, in fact I'm shocked and suprised more help isn't available.
I left the RAF after serving in London. I then rented, in London when the interest rates were at 12%. I lived in a dump as a means to an end, sorted out a job for myself and then got a house and mortgage for my family. At no time did I expect the state to provide for me. Come out with this attitude and you will come unstuck in a big way. When the state is as bad as it is you can't (and shouldn't) rely on it.
I'm confused here, why is it difficult to buy your own house in the RAF? I know of a few who have done with buy to let mortgages, then rented the property to someone else, who then pays your mortgage. The outlay is minimal and you are looking after your own future. I can't state that enough. Look after yourself. The state can't as it's crap.

The state is crap and treats its military very badly. The facts are, social issues have changed over the past 10 years. Migration is huge, property stocks have all but gone, but the priority for service families and singles personnel has not changed, we must be entitled to the same as everyone else. Life insurance that cover operational deployment has only been in place since 2003, most service personnel that have old insurance will not be covered if the worst happens. How the hell does a spouse pay off a mortgage debt. We are more operational now than anyother time since the 11WW. Military personnel leaving now are sofa surfing. Homeless is not a word for those living in a box, its people that have nowhere to call home. Military personnel are around the sixth priority mark in most Council areas and I find this a disgrace like many others.

I understand what firestorm is saying, but the bigger picture has changed. The LSAP 8.5k is only permitted for buy to live and not rent. This requires to be changed and is be looked into at present. I have spoken to the Shadow Defence Minister PA to Mark Harper MP. Their party is looking into a forces package to aid house purchase. One of the ideas is to buy the property and the sevice person will pay the MoD a set Mortgage % for life. These are only ideas at present.

The petition still requires signatures and MPs still need to sign EDM 288.

firestorm - once again - This is about changing the rules to remove a discrimination that applies only to service personnel - this is not about being able to fend for yourself. I hope that clears up any misunderstanding you may have.

I received the following from the AFF, as I said they're pushing this issue and others.

I have sent an email to a Minister in the House and await his reply. I shall place it on here when I get it. We know only too well how this government twists and turns when we require answers and action.

When you read the statement below, you will see how the government and its' body of the DCLG is stalling this issue. I have spent two years chasing this issue up, the government has tried everything possible to close doors on me.
The fact I have more support now from the following groups; RBL, BAFF, AFF, Shelter and of course all those users of the E-Goat, Rum Ration, Rear Party, Arrse and the armynet, only re-enforces the importance of getting this legislation changed.

From AFF

I spoke to the MOD today about various different housing matters that included your issue of ‘local connection’.

MOD are aware of an increase in interest (although this means they spend more time answering MP’s questions and not moving forward – a point they constantly make to me…!) and are working to find a resolution. As I already told you this topic is covered quite regularly (on my prompting) but as you’re also aware it requires a change to primary legislation which is a slow process.

MOD says that they are waiting for a response from DCLG to their questions. The concern is that DCLG will come back with a long list of further questions which will delay things but hopefully there will be an indication of what they’re prepared to do. The really good thing is that it has support from the Services so we just have to keep pushing although I think it will also continue to be frustratingly slow.

I sent the following email to the FOIcommons@parliament yesterday; This is all with reference to the the above statement by the AFF. The fact is the MoD don't change legislation Ministers do, so by Ministers asking questions will not affect the speed inwhich this issue is being addressed. I believe there has been very little discussion going on between the MoD and the DCLG about the local connection rule for military personnel. I will be going to the House of Commons next week to discuss this issue.

Email sent to FOI

I would like to obtain copies of the actual documents, and copies of correspondence between the departments of the MoD and the DCLG. With reference to housing provisions for service personnel leaving the forces and requiring social housing. This matter covers the Homelessness Legislation local connection rule, which only applies to Her Majesty's Armed Forces.
Any cost for post etc, then please inform me.
Thank you for your help in this matter.

Tabled questions By MP
Mrs Nadine Dorries MP has also tabled the two following questions.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what representations has he received from the Department for Communities and Local Government, regarding the housing needs of serving and former members of the armed forces; and if he will make a statement.

The current legislation discriminates against service personnel and puts them at a distinct disadvantage when competing with civilians. An early day motion is currently being signed by MPs which if carried, will help change this legislation, but we need more of them to sign it if we are to get the government to take notice. We now need your support to get this through. Go to http://www.parliament.uk/directories/hciolists/alcm.cfm to find your MP and then Email your MP asking for support for this EDM. Come on E-GOAT, get of your Chairs and give us some support!.

If you wish, you could always take this simple letter and copy and paste it to your MP via the link. Don't forget to place their name and yours in the pasted letter.

Dear *******

The following EDM 288 has been tabled in the House of Commons. I believe our armed forces should be given all the support they require for their civilian transition, and housing is a fundamental requirement. I hope you will show your support by signing EDM 288.

Yours sincerely

Democracy in action

Received this today:

Dear metimmee,

Thank you for contacting my office to raise the issue of housing allocation policy in respect of former members of the armed forces.

I have raised the issues relating to housing and the armed forces directly with the Ministry of Defence on several occasions. In the case of EDM 288 I am happy to say that I have supported it as requested. I am proud to have supported this important call for a greater involvement in the future well being of those who served to protect all of us.

Please feel free to contact my office should you have further issues you wish to raise,

Sincerely

Angus Robertson
