Even though we're in the middle of another balmy English summer my mind wanders to the colder months...What should I be planting later in the year to keep me ticking over in the winter...

Also I fancy me one of those polytunnels...a large one that I can grow peppers, tome and what not in...Anyone within a 100 miles of Lincoln got one they don't want or would sell for much cheapness??

If you don't get a poly tunnel I'd crack on with cabbages, broad beans and winter lettuces.

Managed to get a pic of my chillies in the conservatory before the batteries died in the camera, they are looking pretty good this year.

Had the first cucumber for tea last week too.

The potatoes and broad beans came from my garden for Sunday dinner...very satisfying to be partially feeding myself I can tell you...

The chicken project is ready to go...large pound is erected (oh err...oops I'd better not in case Plain sailing objects)...House has been re-felted, cleaned and put up by 2' off the ground as per and I built a gate yesterday that someone belonging to the master gate builders guild would be proud of...

Now all I need is some bloody chickens...and a bag of feed.

Wonder if anyone can throw some info my way about Rhodedendrons.

I've got a garden full of them, 30 sqm of them as an estimate.

They've flowered this year and have grown considerably.

That's all I know about em.

Can I chop em back? How do I prune em without killing the plant?

Don't know if he's sold the place or not yet, but my uncle Sid owns a market garden on Wigsley road, Harby near Newark, as he's selling/sold it there may be stuff there for grabs.

I never prune my Rhody's. I only have a couple and tend to just leave them to their own devices to be honest. I do give them a top dressing each year of special rhody/azalea compost though. This years dead flower protects and feeds next year's bud and flower.

Sorry but I don't know anything about pruning but I guess the third rule would work.

Third rule, take every third branch out at the base, cut every branch back by a third.

Okay, PANIC MODE,

They're taking over the garden and even the postie is complaining.

It's a jungle out there.

I will post pics tomorrow so you can see the bl@@dy triffids!

Thanks GEM

Do us a favour then and get on the blower to see what he has left?!

Don't like rhodies myself not much will grow anywhere near the things but if you have to have them there is an alternative way of pruning the things. The 3D method that is you remove any branches that are Damaged, Deseased or Dead. However Rhodies are as tough as old boots and very hard to kill so you could be really quite severe with your cutting back and they will still be okay. As Gem says though if you want to feed them don't just use any old fertiliser for best results it needs to type specific as rhodies and azealias don't take kindly to excessive amounts of lime.

My personal choice would be to gently prune them back with a machette and a flame thrower. They would still regrow.

How can I tell when my pentland javs are ready for harvesting?

have a little dig around, gently though and see what size/condition they are. You can leave them though till the haulm dies down if you wish.

Gardening 2008

Bit late now but sweet corn is almost a weed in its growing habits, it is happy in a growbag, (yeah yeah not that sort of a growbag).
Chillies are easy and tomatoes, also spuds need a bit of room and also easy.

Have had a huge crop of strawberries. Good luck.

Well, my tomatoes and courgettes are doing well. Only one problem however, my tomatoes don't seem to want to ripen. They have been green for a good few weeks. Any ideas?

Patience padawan, it's still early unless you have a greenhouse.

had the first 2 cherry toms today, as DS says it takes time and more than that it takes sunshine:PDT_Xtremez_09:

Whats going on with my tomms? Great plants but hardly any flowers/fruits.

My Chillis have loads of flowers but they drop off before fruiting. Water melons are doing well though - fecking huge and loads of them.

my chillies are very good this year. Hungarian hot wax the crop is really strong and the jalapenos are just starting to set fruit and lots of it. I have grown them in smaller pots this year and fed them only once a fortnight with tomatoe feed as opposed to twice a week at half strengh in previous years.

Thing is, I have always watered when required as I was told they hate wet feet. Try growing them in a desert and deciding if they have wet feet. Leaves dry up really quickly but sort themselves out when watered but I still can't get them to fruit.
