still fairly early, just give them a shake gently to help pollination.

Should i be taking any of the new shoots out? Perhaps you dont have to do this with the new hybrids? My cucumbers are coming on superb (even if a do say so myself) but i cheated by getting plants that didnt need much work. Something to do with not worrying about pollination because of the sex? (of the plant that is)
Perhaps i need to get this type of tom plant!
Thanks for the advice.

Thing is, I have always watered when required as I was told they hate wet feet. Try growing them in a desert and deciding if they have wet feet. Leaves dry up really quickly but sort themselves out when watered but I still can't get them to fruit.

Are they in full sunlight or have you tried them shaded?

Tried both, the ones in pots are the ones I am struggling with and try to keep them shaded. They do stipulate full sun but 110 is a bit excessive. The ones in the ground are doing better but still not setting fruit.

I know the ground is okay as the melons are thriving

I f they are grown indoors you should remove all the side shoots. They are the the ones that grow from the join off a leaf to the main stem. These tend to rob the plant of vigour. F1 hybrid Cucumbers these days are all single sex so you don't need to worry about pollination or forgetting to remove the onfruit bearing flowers. Tomatoes aren't like thatthey need pollination to set the fruit, hence giving them a little shae helps do the jobs the insects don't.

The best I can suggest mate is a good tomato feed and keep them moist but not saturated. I have grown mine in 5 inch pots and they stand in a trough on sand which I try to keep damp at least. That trough has about 4 pints of water a day in hot weather and each trough has 4 plants. Once a fortnight each plant gets a pint of full strength mixture of tomorite straight into the pot. Try not tolet the plants wilt before watering, the damage is already done then to any flowers. They should recover and produce.

Might have to get you to send some tomorite out... I have fish blood and bone but that is about it.

If you go to Walmart or Lowes and ask their gardener for a high potash plant food or any good local gardening shop and ask for a tomato feed they should set you straight. I saw tomorite in Gettysburg Walmart in May.

Wooden Carrots

Wooden Carrots

Pulled up one carrot about two weeks ago as a looksee how things were going and it was about the size of my finger but entirely edible. Tried again yesterday and picked the two with the biggest top growth and what appeared to be the start of a flower head. The carrots were small and when attempting to cut them they were like sticks of wood really hard and not at all edible. Have they started to bolt if so is there anything I can do about it ?

if they were a lot bigger in diameter they may just be a couple of rogues. Pull a couple more and have a look. If the top growth is healthy there isn't much you can do, carrots thrive on neglect.

That could be the problem Gem to much TLC I water them very regularly and have fed them once to compound the excessive TLC. Will try a couple more at the weekend but for now I shall treat them to a few days of a good ignoring. The top growth for the whole lot looks good and even maybe they were just rogues I was unlucky enough to pick.

I seldom water carrots unless they are in tubs and then never too much. The idea is to get that one root going deep looking for water.

My potatoe plants seem to be yellowing and wiliting, is this potatoe blight or something else?

no mate just the end of their life as a growing plant. Mine have done the same but the spuds will be fine under the groun d. If they are in pots or barrels just keep pulling out as many as you need when you need them and then just cover over the rest, safest store there is providing you keep the slugs away. I have been eating out of one barrel for ages and the other 3 haven't even been touched yet.

As gem says just the end of the cycle mine are exactly the same and coming up in 2 or 3 weeks weather and OC house permitting of course.

it is unusual not to flower but my javs didn't this year either and they taste wonderful. Might be just fluke or more likely as a result of some clever tinkering by the seed merchants.

GEM, how do you manage to keep the slugs out of the barrel?
Do you cover them in poly?
