Mine have been in the bins for about 2 weeks, not expecting anything for at least another 2 weeks.

Same here, spuds planted just playing a waiting game now, then earth up as required. Runner beans growing nicely and in place now, Sweet million toms, Chillies, Cayenne peppers and bell peppers are still tiny seedlings and no where near ready for outside in growbags or pots yet. Grass is growing like mad though. Daughters flower seedlings are nearly ready for moving out but Mrs TB's geraniums will have to wait another month or so.

The clay is fairly wet. The garden is watered automatically nearly every day and comeend of the month it switches to daily. Think the pot would be overkill.

Full sun or shade? Bearing in mind the sun can be fierce

They'll be better in partial shade as long as there is plenty of light they'll be fine. Watering seems fine if it is auto matic, just sink a pot in if they start to wilt in the heat, that is a sure sign they need more water. I grow my toms under the shade of a tree in the greenhouse and they do fine.

I haven't even sown my beans yet mate, frost will knacker them. Chillies ready to move up to 5inch pots from 3 inch. Tomatoes into second pot and a new variety to me called Stonor are a foot tall. 3 cucumbers into growing positions and about 2 foot tall.

Interesting!!!!! Other I have chatted to suggest putting runners out early and that a frost won't do them any lasting harm. Other kinds of beans (French beans) however will be as you say totally banjaxed by even a tiny frost. My french beans haven't sprouted yet and are about 3 to 4 weeks behind the runners. Bit of a problem then if the runners have got to come back inside for a bit. Thoughts???

Complete opposite. Runners aren't half as hardy as French beans. When I used to grow French beans I'd start them in the greenhouse and would put them out about now and expect to be eating them in 4 weeks time. I will sow my runners at the beginning of May in the greenhouse and set them out in the garden onthe 1st or 2nd June when I get back from my holidays. That said my son's neighbour was definitely of the same school as whoever you were talking too and he had a belting early crop.

Bear in mind you are further South than me and that can make as much as 2 weeks difference to timings. You should be earlier than me.

Reading with interest about the chillis I've got some cayenne ones on my windowsill and they're doing fine except for aphids a bit of research shows that a mixture of soap and water will do for them apparently. Is this the best idea or is there some old gardeners trick that will see off the unsightly pests?

Cheers Gem. I might be further South but I shall have to watch the weather forecasts with care for the next month and get the fleece out if needed. Still it proves the old adage if you want two different opinions speak to two different gardeners.

there is a brilliant bugspray you can use from B&Q called bug gun I think quite safely at this time of year but soapy water will do the trick but take a bit of time and make sure you get them all then just put some of those little yellow flypapers from the garden centre on sticks among the plants to stop them coming back.

Just planted the following seeds to put them on my windowsill for sprouting..

Sungold toms
golden sunrise toms
marketmore cucumbers
paragor corgettes

Loads of seeds left....If anybody wants some PM me....

How affected by frost in their early days are Leeks and sprouts? I grew them in trays and now want to get them outside but the forecast of possible frosts worries me...

Just been doing some research for myself and had a quick look...can't find anything about sprouts or leeks being affected by frosts. They do grow through the worst part of the winter....

spend the next couple of days "hardening them off". Basically stand the trays outside during the day and bsck inside overnight. 3 days will be plenty but both leeks and sprouts are very hardy and would survive mild to moderate frosts if planted straight out.

put them in the airing cupboard in the dark until they sprout, the warmth and dark will aid germination. Put them on the windowsill when they come through.

hows your garden growing?

hows your garden growing?

I'm in the middle of ripping mine apart so the weeds are thriving. I am however doing well with my tomatoes in the greenhouse they are between 9 inches and a foot depending on variety. I have a dzen plants I am holding back for Vim for planting outside. My chillies are all ready to move into 6 inch pots for growing in the consevatory. Cucumbers look a bit sad though, might have to restart them. Spuds jusy beginning to show their faces in the tubs so with no frost forecast I'll let them grow a bit before earthing up. Onions now have 4 or 5 leaves and are looking resally good.

Pretty shiiitee really...but then it is a quarter and the chickens are having a field day...god knows how I'm going to keep them away from the crops...I'm only growing in pots and bags this year, they might have to go out front...

We're all paved out the back, so i'm restricted to pot's, tub's and hanging baskets.
Last year I grew 6 bush type tomato plants in 3 hanging baskets. They were slow to get off the mark, and got a touch of potato blight, but caught up.
I use a lot of tomato's in my indian cooking, but I ended up giving loads away to friends and family. Got the same variety this year, "Tumbler" and have been hardening them off for the last week. They're going in the baskets tomorrow, but they'll be covered in polythene at nights for a few weeks yet.

Update on my patch

Update on my patch

Spuds are in but not showing yet, Toms (sweet million) doing rubbish two plants about 1 inch high rest (12) have yet to germinate. Chilli peppers, cayenne peppers and bell peppers just little seedlings at the 2 leaf stage. Runner beans out and going like a train but might get pinged by a late frost so back ups in pots on the window sill if needed, french beans in pots but yet to sprout. Trailing nastursum going well as are lavateria and passion flower seedlings just waiting for the last chance of frost to go maybe another 2/3 weeks before planting. Outdoors everything is on the move shrubs, lillies daylillies, aubretia etc all going well leaves appearing on the twisted hazel just watch a late frost knock them back a couple of weeks. Oh and the grass is growing like mad.

Just noticed my potatoes poking starting to poke through the soil...So I need to dump more compost onto the greenery to earth them up or should I let the greenery get a bit more established?

My cucumbers, corgettes and toms seeds have all sprouted and are about an inch high.

For me I would let them get about 3 or 4 inches high a bit of sunlight won't do them any harm, and they'll green up a bit , then earth up. If a frost is forecast however cover them before the frost can damage the new shoots. TB
