I don't think you can go on the number alone?

For a long time, the first 3 of the service number indicated the type of entry, e.g., 827 was YTS. When I joined, the lads were 842 and the girls were 824. That changed a couple of years ago when all new entrants, male and female, had numbers beginning 850. Now, thanks to JPA all new entrants for all 3 services, including officers, are allocated 300 numbers.

Sarge? Fecking sarge??

Little scrote should have been strung up.

Mumbling away now about massage, sausage etc.

I was 8108, (Oct '73) but I escaped after 12yrs.
I enjoyed it, and don't regret any of it.

Feck me, how do they remember them???

God knows. Anyone who knows me will tell you I have a freakishly good memory for numbers, especially service numbers, but that ability depends on the check digits (letters) at one end or t'other. The first person recruited post-JPA was given the number 30000001 and it went on sequentially from there. I can't remember whose is which any more.

More importantly, the check digit existed to stop us accidentally updating the wrong record due to fat finger syndrome. Now mistakes are too easy to make and too difficult to identify.

I know of one guy on here who was in the mob 10 years or more before I was born. He's being very quiet on this thread. And I'm no newbie, one more year and I can expect to meet someone born after I joined up.

Mine is 2636 cos I joined as an Oggie in 88 and then when I joined the Regulars in 89 I kept the same number which confused quite a few people at Swinders.

As I am no longer a serving member I don’t know if I qualify for this thread. However, as I am still working for the MoD (38 years continuous service this month) does that qualify me?

If so, my number was 8075, joined up 11 Mar 1969 man-entry Swinderby – not the easy apprentice route (I will wait for Hue’s reply on that one!).
