Olympics Faff!!!!!!!!

  • Thread starter Thread starter bluetonic

The UK's armed forces are on standby to provide an additional 3,500 troops to help with security at the 2012 London Olympics, the BBC has learned.

It comes amid fears that private contractor G4S would not be able to provide enough trained staff in time.

Short notice to move, cheers!!

Can't get the link to work, i'm intrigued now to see what else we have been dicked for, after reading the subsequent comments?!

Me too, but it's to do with potentially drafting a further 3,500 service personnel to provide security on top of 13,500 for this and other duties as it's been indicated that G4S are struggling to recruit and process their declared commitment.

FFS, where on earth can they find more of us!

What if?

What if?

I hear that our esteemed Minister of Defence has stated that "He will have no hesitation in ordering our Typhoons at Northolt or our SAM's (on various blocks of flats!) to "shoot down" any hi-jacked airliner(s)! I can only hope that if this does happen they will be on final approach to R/W 27 at Heathrow (over Westminster!). I feel that our "leaders" have totally lost it!!

If it were to happen when the right people aren't in the right place to make such a decision and they have to work the ROE through in the few minutes they are going to get whilst pondering that an airliner coming down over London is going to be carnage if it's over a venue or a housing estate I doubt these measures are anything but a gesture...

Somebody with Designated Authority to say shoot will always be in the right place.

and they have to work the ROE through in the few minutes they are going to get whilst...

They already know the ROE, as do all of the rest of the people who really matter.

pondering that an airliner coming down over London is going to be carnage if it's over a venue

and would result in at least a couple of thousand deaths (as in 9/11)

or a housing estate

which would result in tens to a hundred dead max (as has happened every time an airliner has come down in an urban area bar 9/11).

I doubt these measures are anything but a gesture

Nope, they are real, as the designated authority (should the top dog be incommunicado) or the big man himself will be dammed if he does and even more dammed if he doesn't give the order. Rapier and HVM may be pushed to take out an airliner though!

Tens to a hundred? When was the last time an airliner just had tens to a hundred on it, or is that ground casualties?

When was the last time an airliner hit a metropolitan area, other than 9/11 to give you the assumption of tens upward calculation?

G4S said it had "some issues in relation to workforce supply".

Funny how HMG don't admit the same thing about the military eh?

The big question I would like answered is - is G4S going to return the cash they have been paid for the personnel that they cannot supply? (or do I hear the sound of tumbleweed blowing........).
How about G4S pay for the troops' accomm / messing etc - that won't happen either.

MJ - I see your answers that have come straight out of the 'Perfect World' book but having practiced scenario's (exercised the comms) like this before one can only hope that they up their game...that said there is an extra comms faff when doing it from the air compared to the ground and perhaps over this period more focus will be laid upon it...

Been thinking about these extra guys...over the past week there have been a number of arrests based on terrorist activities...I know the target for these cells has been announced as the EDL but that is what I would say if I'd spent close to £10bn on an event that I want people to come to and not be too scared to attend and spend all my lovely money...perhaps intelligence gathered since these arrests has uncovered bigger worries.

As in most things to do with governments and security most things are rarely as they are seen...

Yes once again a contract promises what it can't deliver, but don't worry just keep the money we'll use the forces instead.. Olympics my Ar8e what a waste of time, money and resources just so those in the South can pat themselves on the back and sit around S*cking each other off whilst thinking everyone loves them.

I find it ironic that the Armed Forces are providing extra manpower because a contractor cannot deliver; yet, at the same time, we are reducing the size of the Armed Forces Service Support elements as some of these functions will be carried out by [obviously very reliable] contractors in future. I wonder what would happen if those contractors failed to deliver!

Mainjafad is working on past figures, the 3rd party risk to life is massive - it depends on time of day, location, structure hit etc. Once the aircraft is hit by a missile (ground or air) then its uncontrolable, it will land where is lands. To assume that it will be tens to a hundred is lunacy.
