Call me a sceptic but could the reason that G4S is struggling to fulfil their contract be that they underbid? I'm sure that if they upped the pay sufficiently that they could fill these temporary vacancies.
Somebody with Designated Authority to say shoot will always be in the right place.
which would result in tens to a hundred dead max (as has happened every time an airliner has come down in an urban area bar 9/11).QUOTE]
The only reason hundreds were not killed in the El Al crash in Amsterdam was the fact that the 747 had only 4 aboard.
In most cases we have been quite lucky where these jets have come down, IE low(ish) density areas, there would not be "tens" of deaths should one come down on Oxford Street or similar.

That is why the Designated Authority is somebody very very senior. Tough decisions would need to be made almost immediately - in the worst case, indicision would not be an option.
I'm not involved in any of the planning or execution of the air security plan so - like most on here - my thoughts are based on assumption. I presume that the threat may not necessarily be an airliner - a light aircraft/helicopter/business jet hitting the Olympic Park would not be a good thing. It could well be a case of the lesser of 2 evils - aircraft hits crowded sports stadium containing tens of thousands verses aircraft hitting other area containing tens of hundreds.
I'm glad that I don't have to make that kind of decision.
If we're talking airliners, then obviously you are correct but the security measures implemented since 9/11 make them a far less attractive target to a would-be terrorist than they once were. A light aircraft on the other hand...many fewer casualties but the pilot still gets his 72 virgins and the ghost of Bin Laden sticks 2 fingers up to the UK.Mainjafad is working on past figures, the 3rd party risk to life is massive - it depends on time of day, location, structure hit etc. Once the aircraft is hit by a missile (ground or air) then its uncontrolable, it will land where is lands. To assume that it will be tens to a hundred is lunacy.
What's gripping my sh1t right now is our elected masters think it's fine to request the extra service personnel on a whim without realising the added knock-on effects it'll have.
