Call me a sceptic but could the reason that G4S is struggling to fulfil their contract be that they underbid? I'm sure that if they upped the pay sufficiently that they could fill these temporary vacancies.

Of course you are not being sceptical! It is how Government contracts work!

See nice juicy job, underbid knowing full well that you cannot get the job done at that price and still make money. Get job, take money, fail to deliver, get bailed out by Government who cannot see the project fail.

Winner.

Somebody with Designated Authority to say shoot will always be in the right place.
which would result in tens to a hundred dead max (as has happened every time an airliner has come down in an urban area bar 9/11).QUOTE]

The only reason hundreds were not killed in the El Al crash in Amsterdam was the fact that the 747 had only 4 aboard.

In most cases we have been quite lucky where these jets have come down, IE low(ish) density areas, there would not be "tens" of deaths should one come down on Oxford Street or similar.

That is why the Designated Authority is somebody very very senior. Tough decisions would need to be made almost immediately - in the worst case, indicision would not be an option.

I'm not involved in any of the planning or execution of the air security plan so - like most on here - my thoughts are based on assumption. I presume that the threat may not necessarily be an airliner - a light aircraft/helicopter/business jet hitting the Olympic Park would not be a good thing. It could well be a case of the lesser of 2 evils - aircraft hits crowded sports stadium containing tens of thousands verses aircraft hitting other area containing tens of hundreds.

I'm glad that I don't have to make that kind of decision.

Mainjafad is working on past figures, the 3rd party risk to life is massive - it depends on time of day, location, structure hit etc. Once the aircraft is hit by a missile (ground or air) then its uncontrolable, it will land where is lands. To assume that it will be tens to a hundred is lunacy.
If we're talking airliners, then obviously you are correct but the security measures implemented since 9/11 make them a far less attractive target to a would-be terrorist than they once were. A light aircraft on the other hand...many fewer casualties but the pilot still gets his 72 virgins and the ghost of Bin Laden sticks 2 fingers up to the UK.

Again it depends where it lands, what he has on board etc. You cannot say that there will NOT be a big loss of life unless you evacuate the city or hold the games in Norfolk!

I note from the Commons speech that both Hammond and May have stated that the Chiefs of Staff have supported the deployment, adding that "it would not have an adverse impact on other operations".

Hammond has also stated "We will ensure that all those taking part receive their full leave entitlement, even if it has to be rescheduled, that no-one is out of pocket due to cancelled personal arrangements and that all deployed personnel are appropriately supported,"

What a crock - as far as I am concerned I don't believe a word this pathetic excuse for a minister says....I just hope that Dave, Nick and Ed have a jolly good time at the Games, safe in the knowledge that this will have cost them at least one vote....

End of rant...

Not after 13 years of Bliar/Bruin and the Great Liabour Fiasco.....still, we live and learn....UKIP, here I come!

And you are surprised ? :PDT_Xtremez_42:

I always thought Governments messed up big time towards the end of a Parliament :PDT_Xtremez_42:

Sad thing is, I am not surprised with anything that happens these days, just a shrug and carry on as if it is normal

Note to self - Try and think something positive about politicians ::P:and they wonder why people do not vote :PDT_Xtremez_42:

I applied for g4s but got no due to not holding the correct qualification the sia license not surprised they cudnt recruit enough people. But if I was still in I would of volunteered for it as its going to be a once in a lifetime opportunity

Just back from a little base in London where Q are launching from and they have been told to make room for an extra 3500 pers. There is already no room, 500 Para's sleeping in a hanger on cot beds, waiting for an influx of 16 AA. Tent city is a shambles due to the wx. Roll on mid October when I have finished with this sh*t. Actually looking forward to my ooa.

G4S were supposed to be recruiting about 160 staff at the Ricoh arena today, apparently only 6 people turned up.
Let the rolling goat that is Britains attempt to host a major world event commence.............

What's gripping my sh1t right now is our elected masters think it's fine to request the extra service personnel on a whim without realising the added knock-on effects it'll have.

Trying to get anything done with assistance from station is a right pain in the 'arris right now. I've lost count the amount of replies I receive on the phone to request assistance from relevant POCs to sort stuff out for me only to have the response "...sorry Sarge, they're away on Op Olympic!"

There was an interview with a retired Army bod on TV earlier in which he pointed out that at a time when the government had just announced plans to lay off more servicemen and cut the size of the army even more, it was having an adverse effect on moral. Reading between the lines he almost seemed to be on the point of saying the government were taking the p1ss in running to the military to bail them out of yet another hole of their own making at a time when they were being treated so poorly.
But, stand by for more patronising syrup from the politicos...:PDT_Xtremez_06:

[Edit] One of the Sgts in the office I work in has had the following diversions to attend to over the past few weeks.....

Organisation for Cosford's Air day
Organisation and then deployment to RIAT. Immediately on return from that without a second to wash his scrungies....
Organisation for the Queen's pageant held today.
And who knows, now the extra bodies are required to bail G4S out of the poo........Olympics?

I've just thought, I ought to activate my 'out of office' reply on my email at work with a 'not available, on Op Olympic' message and gaff off any sh1t jobs that come my way. Winner!

I bet the chiefs of staff have supported the deployment of extra troops. Bet they will get rewarded with extra champagne in the Vvip tent! My experience with my staff being deployed is what a farce, talk about a lack of organisation. This latest news confirms what I have known for some time, our leaders are out of touch, have no idea about the lack of morale across the services, and they really don't care. Time to start job hunting, had enough of being led by incompetent fools!

What was also insulting was the Home Sec indicated that 10,000 tickets would be made available for troops for the Olympics.

Who would want to go in fear of bumping into a colleague who hadn't volunteered to be there. I wouldn't! Besides, do we have 10,000 service personnel left to take up on this 'generous' offer? Of course we do, our airships of course.

Every civilian is getting paid extra for working the olympics like Train staff, Bus Drivers etc

What do the Forces get, no Allowences , living in a tent for god knows how long and restricted to base with no chance of a beer.

Oh and to pay for there own food , Brilliant
