Saurez banned

So is it against the LAW of this land to call someone a N*GG*R ie, a criminal offence? If I used the word in my house, when there was just me and my wife around, is that illegal? Just to make it clear, this is not something I do by the way.

If your wife was offended by the use of that word she would be entitled to report you to the police.

Is it just that word or is it if any word caused offence. Also, how is the level of offence measured? What if it only upset her a little? I'm not being pedantic, I'm just trying to find how crazy this country has come.

Well John Terry has been charged... Is there a thread running for this? If found guilty (must be a decent amount of evidence for a charge), then what do people think will happen?

I'm trying to find out if using the N word is against the Law, in other words you could get arrested for it and convicted of an offence. If so, why wasn't Suarez done for it, seems to be two rules here. Mind you, I'm not sure what evidence/witnesses Evra had in his favour.

Back to the footballers Terry is to appear before magistrates

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-16284813

The max fine is seemingly around £2500, mere peanuts for Terry but his sponsors won't like the bad PR. What do the FA do now? Sticking to the innocent until proven guilty line should Terry continue to play unhindered for club and country? If the FA do anything have they prejudged the offence yet if they do nothing are they dithering? Saurez has an 8 game ban hanging over his head from a conversation that apparently only Evra heard, what ban might the FA impose on a player whose comments can seemingly be verified by lipreading the video? What next Rooney taking offence at being called a scouse, Bellamy a Taff or Steve Kean being described as a manager. Are we destined to have football players who dare not speak to each other for fear of some little precious with hurt feelings whining to plod or should football grow up and embrace all the social nuances of a modern politically correct litigation rich world.

Did he? Or did he use the word 'nigreto' which is, apparently, a commonly used term in Latin American countries and is on a par with calling someone jock or taffy or scouse in this country. There is even a milk chocolate drink in Mexico called Nigreto believe it or not.
Its all about intent though, if Suarez did use the word Nigreto did he say it knowing it had offensive undertones in this country, or did he genuinely think he was just poking fun at a player he'd had in his back pocket all game? Mens rea, only he knows.

"Negrito" (Masculine) "Negrita" (Feminine) is indeed generally used as a term of endearment, all over South America. Every time I hear it I cringe a little inside but the locals don't seem to care or even notice!

However, I would not consider using it in jest, love or insult in UK.

Off Topic Didn't the Rolling Stones have a song in the 70's called "Hey Negrita?" How times change!

I still think that this is going to come back on the FA with avengence. Suarez lawyers have confirmed they are appealing with possibilities of taking this to a magistrates court. If it goes to a court of law, I can't see the 8 match ban being held up. If it gets overturned then the door is wide open for a massive law suit against the FA for slander.

So let me get this right, as it's ok to say it in his native country, it's ok to use in this country is it? Seeing as he's owned up to using a term widely used in South America, I don't think he's got a leg to stand on. With a bit of luck, he'll appeal, it will fail, and he'll get his ban doubled. That's the usual threat isn't it if you appeal an FA decision???

It's whether he used with the intent to insult that is contencious...ever watched 'Boyz in the Hood'? The 'N' word is used with gay abandon without insult in fact it's a badge of office....When I call Fomz 'fcuk face' do I mean it or is it an insult of endearment? (its an insult by the way...he really is a terrible cnut)

Terry I think is a fearful person...he's proved a few times to have a nasty streak in him and doesn't mind getting nuts deep in his team mates birds...wht not isolate 5 lip readers and show them the best footage of the incident they have...then get them to write down what they think he said...then get 5 trick-cyclist to analyse his body language at the time...take a majority opinion and fine the fecker because we all know it's true...

You don't have to be physically attacked or injured to be a victim of a race hate crime. You may be subjected to abuse that you find offensive; it's also illegal for anyone to use threatening and abusive language.....

Yes, I'm sure Suarez was using it as a term of endearment! Evra is a nasty toe rag, Suarez is a nasty toe rag, Sureaz got caught and now Liverpool are saying its ok to racially abuse someone.
Nice club.

I think you have a point here. Whilst I agree with clubs supporting their players, he's been found guilty of racially insulting another player. Are Liverpool supporting racism then? Mind you, I wouldn't expect anything less from a bunch of dirty fcukin liverpudlian, scouse, thievin' dole scrounging dippers!!!! What's good for the goose....... ;-)

Bollux - everyone is offended by something most of the time - that doesn't make it a crime. It's nasty, but if you cannot deal wiht it yourself, that just means you lack the wit or intelligence to do so, not that the coppers should step in every time your little world tilts by a micron the wrong way.

(I love being too old for this "joan of arc" crap)

Whats bollux? It's not my opinion, its the law of the land. It matter not if you agree or disagree with it, it the law.

With the John Terry affair it's now in the hands of the law and plod are moving towards a legally binding guilty or innocent decision for him. I am not aware that Saurez has had criminal charges brought, or formal legal procedings and has not had a day in court merely an FA tribunal of 3 who have handed down a ban. Hard to say he (Saurez) has broken a law when plod haven't even thought it worthy of charging him with anything.

The question I answered was, "Is calling someone a ni**** against the law?"
That's what I answered.
Plod weren't involved as no one made a complaint to them.

This was what I was getting at. Suarez gets an 8 match ban for racially abusing Evra. Terry, for what I would think is the same offence, is being done by the law. Is this equal parity of treatment? Have to agree with Stevienics, whilst I don't agree with racism, at what point do we draw a line in the sand? "Oi Taff, come here", is that considered racism?

I knew when I watched it that this would happen. But seriously, is it only black people who suffer from racism? Is it not something that effects all manner of skin tone across the globe? So why not refer to those effected as 'coloured' rather than list the different forms in which we come? I'm probably missing the point somewhere so await re-education...

It wasn't that long ago when you couldn't refer to blacks as blacks, you had to call them coloured. Then they didn't like that, so it's now back to blacks. And here's one for you, would you call David James black?? I certainly wouldn't. So what color do we call him?
