I have thought about being a techie in the RAF but i get told different things by different people
i have been told that it is a great job and easy to understand with easy maths but by other people i have been told it is rubbish with loads of hard maths in which is hard t understand?
what is it REALLY like to be a techie?

Obviously it's hard work being a techie but the immense satisfaction of knowing that you are at the top of the ladder when it comes to intelligence, and generally being (and rising above) the best is a feeling that you can't better.

The maths is no harder than A level depending on the specialisation and level of entry. At AMM the level is more like GCSE at most.

it also depends on what type of tecchie you want to be, AMM's now have a very low (GCSE) standard of maths, but have room to develop.

You'll be ok not matter what trade you end up, AV/Lecky or Rigger/Sootie. The maths isn't really anything to worry about, it's all about the same level for both trades.

How can you even equate those grease swilling spanner monkeys with the intelectual gods that are TG2?
(He's right though BEG it's about the same in any of the 2 Tech trades)

to be honest the only maths you do as a techie is the suduku in the paper. and sometimes the odd fuel calculation (litres to kg and discrepancies)

if your doing a level physics, you should be good with all those wiggly amps (avionics/electrician) but if you like to get your hands grubby and don't mind being covered in oil (perhaps another thread!) then propulsion / airframes would be a better choice.

I forgot myself there! Everyone knows that if Riggers mess up a measuring a panel they just cover the whole with speed tape, or mash the general area with a hammer!
I've never thought of myself as an intellectual god before, but I can now see why!

If you have A level in physics you should consider a comission.

You get better treatment and loads more money. its not a hands on job though.

If you join as a tech now you will be a AMM (aircraft maintenance mechanic)

you wont have a specific trade immediately just an overview of all trades.

in a couple of years you get the option of mechanical or electrical.

alternatively you could go for ground equipment, this gives better skills for civilian life but is a little unstable at the moment (civilianization)

Do not however join as an armorour.

AMM's are streamed. They already decided at the AFCO what they wanted to be, they will just be lineys for 2-3 years before they actually get taught their trade.

Thats what the AMM's tell me on my sqn.

cool!
thanks for all your advise!
much appreciated.
I have thought about going for a commission but i have decided not to as i like to be hands on with things.
Techie would be my back up. The actual job that i am applying for is Weapons Systems Operator, should be handin application in for that in the next few months.
I originally wanted to be Pilot but i don't think that i would get it unfortunatley.
Regiment would be great but like said before NO GIRLS ALLOWED :O
ah well lol
thanks all!

As a TechieI can quite honestly say that being able to spell entail could help. But as a fellow bird, who is a rigger (for now any how)it is great fun but a little tiring at times.

Off Topic Apart from when the bl**** RAFwon't let you work and sends you to hospital for 10 weeks and then on long term sick AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!

I justwant to get back to work!

To be an AMM you need Maths, English and a Science GCSE grade C or above. You will be streamlined at the AFCO depending on your aptitude test results, whether you are electrical bias or mechanical. You will do about 18 months to 2 years on first line preferably and then return for further training (FT). If you start out as mechanical, but show a flair for electrical work you can change trades to suit before doing your FT course. Follow the links to the AMM trade.
