Any one fancy a new no fly zone det to Aki?

BBC saying if the UN vote yes to the no fly zone over Lybia (in the next hr or so) then RAF Jets could be in action over the contry tomorrow!!!!!!

I know were good but unless theres a hidden sqn or two out there then I very much doubt it!!!!!

SDSR (didnt see this comming did yah!)

I must admit I have grave reservations on this resolution. Even if we stop his tanks and planes, he can still drive into benghazi in pickup trucks and carry out his planned slaughter. What are we going to do? Isolate Benghazi and prevent all movement into the city?

Dave, Obama and Co have been seduced into the idea of a "no fly zone" as a catch all solution. Its not. It didnt stop Saddam draining the Marshes of Southern Iraq or the carrying out actions against the Kurds in the north of the country during the period 1992 - 2003.

We could end up in another Bosnia type situation where we are relegated to watching a genocide take place right in front of us.

We couldn't do anything to protect the Kurs or Marsh Arabs from Iraqi gound forces because we did not have a UN mandate to - our mandate was purely to enforse the NFZ.

This one is different. The UN Security Council Resolution permits:

...to take all necessary measures, notwithstanding paragraph 9 of resolution 1970 (2011), to protect civilians and civilian populated areas under threat of attack in the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, including Benghazi..

without authorising a Foreign occupation. Therefore, any deployed force is authorised to take action against any ground forces threatening civilians and civilian poulated areas.

My point is this - how exactly are we going to stop him once he gets into the centre of Benghazi?

Would some one like to tell me where we are getting these A/C from. Coz last time I looked we were getting chopped left right and centre. But no doubt our clowns at the top have said we can without really looking at what we can provide.

I'd have thought it was quite obvious.
A handful of Tonkas in Afghan, a few Typhoons in the Falklands.
What's left?

Doing it is the easy part. Doing it continually over a period of time is what is difficult.

The irony is, that if we had gone in when we first saw the need it would probably be all over by now. The determination by politicians on all sides to avoid another Iraq and to do it properly, i.e., at the request of the Arab League and with UN backing, all took time and now means that we are likely to be there for a while. Ho hum!

If I may borrow a line from the boys at Lakenheath some time ago LIBYA = Lossiemouth Is Bombing Your Ass.

From what I've been briefed we prob shouldn't discuss what, where how etc. Just a thought. Nearly replied to correct but realised what I was doing.

Given that it's in the news, I didn't put anything that isn't in the public domain. In fact just now, the lunchtime news has mentioned Coningsby and Waddington.

Damm beat me to it. Saw a number of classic USAF 48th TFW 'Libya = Lakenheath is Bombing Your Ass' T-shirts and Stickers post April 1986.

Gadaffi will by now have had the resolution scrutinised by people cleverer than him and he will now know what he can and can't do to incur ordanance...He will now sit tight and see just how resolute we are as a joint force and for how long we can afford to keep up any mil effort we decide on...
