I see that Boris’s tame Imperial College Professor has had to resign due to breaking the lockdown rules. From tomorrow I will be using Professor Ferguson’s rules on going out and about. Good enough for a Senior Advisor, good enough for me.

How will your wife react to the arrival of your married lover (twice)?

You should have gone weeks ago. If it was good enough for Robert jenrick, then it's good enough for everybody else. This govt is full of hypocrites

Here's some interesting thoughts. I received this in a WhatsApp conversation today so they aren't my own words.

"interesting thought re corona virus.
everybody is worried about a second wave happening that will be worse than the first one ( mainly citiing Spanish flu as the reason for this)
But, lots of people saying they had bad flu symptoms in December, January and France now reporting the official first case was in December.

So, what if, what has just happened was the actual "Second wave" and more of us have had a mild version earlier in the year ?"

🤔🤔🤔

I was very ill over Xmas, started 2 days before and lasted for about 10 days. Same symptoms as both flu and the Covid 19 virus. Only a test will tell. It is interesting that there are a lot of stories that a lot of people have been infected but literally have no symptoms.

Watching the PMs speech and him talking about not opening the hospitality industry until July, all I’m hearing is that you can pretty much say goodbye to hundreds of thousands of jobs as well as tourism. Guess we’ll be in for a few more decades of either horrendous taxes or more f**king austerity. Good times ahead kids, good times.

Call me a bluff old traditionalist but I'd rather have the austerity than have the unnecessary death of thousands caused by restrictions being lifted too soon.

I note with interest that both Germany and S Korea, countries that had begun to lift their restrictions, have seen an increase in the number of new cases being reported. And that there are further cases being reported in China.

Consider this then chaps. How many people are going to die from non-virus related issues? Apparently cancer referrals are way down from usual, thousands allegedly. The same can be said of all those who have not gone to their doctors for fear of catching the virus, or not attended hospital when they really should have. All those whose treatments for life threatening problems that have been put on hold or cancelled entirely. All those surgeries cancelled in hospitals all over the U.K. You can also consider how many deaths we will see from yet another round of austerity. I’d imagine we will see a rise in suicides.

The banking crash of 2008 f**ked this country and ruined our children’s futures, this will destroy that future. Education - f**ked. Tourism - f**ked. Hospitality - f**ked. Retail - f**ked. Health and Fitness (I.e. gyms) - f**ked.

I can see what you’re saying but I can honestly state that for once in my life I am deeply worried about the future. If we do go down the austerity route, and it will be for decades this time, I wonder which area of the Armed Forces is going to be cut first? The NHS is now so fetishised as a cult it’s nigh on impossible to make changes despite the utterly overbloated nature of its management structure. They made promises about the police force increases so that’s politically ‘off the table’. It will be cuts to the Civil Service and military yet again.

Those are all excellent points; but what are the realistic alternatives?

If the Government abandon the current crop of measures and lift lockdown in its entirety just for the sake of the economy, how do we know that that wont trigger a 2nd spike in cases?

And even if we did lift the lockdown, it is by no means certain that other countries would follow suit. I cant imagine anyone on the planet has a particular desire to travel so it wont just be our tourism industry that is f**ked; it will be f**ked globally.

We keep trying to apply the pre-covid thinking to a post covid UK and the model doesn't work. Its hard for me and I bet a whole bunch of others to accept that our world is changing at a rate we find hard to comprehend. Ninja has listed the areas of change and now we need to take time to accept and adapt if we can.

I think it will not be acceptable to a number of people and there's not a lot we can do about that...Try as the Government does (and this would be any colour of Government right now) to stand in front of the dyke and to shore up any leaks there's too many in a complex and free-thinking society. It's inevitable that a pre-covid society will suffer, in some cases very badly, in a post covid reality.

I think those dates quoted yesterday are very 'big hand-fulls'. The 1st July one is in reaction to the tourism sector saying 'if you take away our main summer month trading then you'll have to support us all right through until next May 21 as we don't to make our usual revenue before we shut down over the winter'. If the numbers support activity then it'll happen...if they don't then it'll stay closed and they'll have to open the wallet again and support.

My own opinion...I think a lot more people out here have had it than the Government know about whether back in Dec/Jan or of late and that the immunity levels are higher than we think. It's not going to be easy but I think we'll pull through this next phase ok.

Why didn't the government publish the briefing document first and then get Johnson to speak on TV. Last night was a shambles.

I actually agree with you (please print and frame) on the point of timing...If I was PM'ing that project a key activity would be to have the 50-pager ready to go straight after the chat on TV. Good delivery on the speech though...clearly he's been coached a deal since this has all started.

Let's not start this again...It's getting a bit boring and frankly its closing people out from the Goat is everything is perpetually turned into a political argument.

It's not a political arguement. All we were left with from last night was confusion. How is that political.
