tech vs non-tech

tech vs non-tech

I didn't think this was going to turn into a techie vs non-techie bunfight. We have enough of those and they are not usually disguised as something else. If you like we could compare notes on total hours worked over the last 14 years (or however long you have been in, if it's less). I would bet one of your shiny liney pounds that you are way behind the drag curve.

It's not a tech vs non-tech thing. It's a flying sqn vs people working in 8-5 jobs whatever their trade. As stated by Monobrow - the 2 winged master race have to punch holes in the clouds for a certain amount of time per month. What time of day they do this depends on what tasks they need to complete to get their "ticks in boxes" This then impacts our start and finish times. You want to add an hour onto those times to do the PT then we're already "overworked." I'm currently working (on average) 48-50 hours a week and your ENTITLEMENT from the European Directoive is ONE uninterrupted 20 minute session for your lunch. On a flying Sqn that's about right. I didn't say it was fair - when you see the daisies running round the ring road for an hour.

I have only read a few posts today but I am getting this feeling it's all negative comments regarding the new fitness test standards?

Okay, they (our lards and masters) are trying to close the door after the horse has bolted, but lets face it, that horse has long since passed on and been eaten way before MaccyD's (allegedly) started cooking them.

They did HAVE to start somewhere for the sake of setting military standards IMHO and unfortunately us poor souls are caught up in it (for now).
For too long we have been getting grief for being the laziest of the 3 services and before anyone starts, I am no fitness freak by any stretch of the imagination. I am a fat knacker like a few I know on here and I do sometimes feel I need to address that, sooner than later, especially now I have passed the big 4-0. However, I have never failed a fitness test, but I am certain next year will be a different story if I dont get off my lazy ass and stop surfing por ... I mean the goat! (cough!)
A few years ago we did 6 weeks hat training before a trip to the sandy place and it did make a big difference, I just wish I had kept it going, but laziness took over.

So I think you all need to take a reality check and get on with it.
If they are telling you to do 2 or 3 trips to the gym a week in works time (as it is here at ISL), then make the most of it.
It's time away from work for a start, it's good for you, you dont have to break sweat if you dont want to and after a year of that you WILL feel the difference.
So stop bleating and make the most of it!!!::P:

Hear hear I hit the big 50 2 years ago but still represent the sqn at COs cup. Stop moaning and get off yer butts, two winged master race set policy so flying hours must suffer to fit it in. ok AGREE REAL LIFE OPS not much chance, but all the same we must make time to get fitter. Too many blue jobs dropping like flies when temp heats up, plus we are now laughing stock inter-services other than a few talented individuals.

When was last time someone awarded with Stn colours.

Time off work to actually GET them would be a good starting point..........

Ed while i agree with most of what you say, when you were on the sqn i can never remember the night shift start time being 15:30 !!

So stop bleating and make the most of it!!!::P:
You should know me by now, thats my favourite job of the day :PDT_Xtremez_30:

Crack on.............:PDT_Xtremez_09:

Going right back to the start, the Innsworth Ego Mechanics were saying only three weeks ago that FT would be twice yearly from Julyand the 3x50Mins Phys were part of the prep for it.

Its amazing, These people sit at Innsworth, working days, loads of oppotunity to go to the gym, so they think this is how it is across the whole RAF. Maybe if they pulled themselves away from their mirrors for a bit and got out around some 24hr units, they may change their tune. Oh sorry, they can't do that because that may mean that they have to work after 5pm.

Looks like the new fitness test standards are being delayed till next year..Shame!!!

"The new RAFFT aerobic standards (linked to levels of risk), announced last year for introduction 1 Apr 07, were postponed to 1 Jul 07, in the hope of coinciding with other possible changes. Those changes (amended muscular strength/endurance standards, female press-up protocol, frequency of testing, PIs, waist circumference and BMI measurements) are still awaiting formal approval from the RAF Board. The decision to postpone the introduction until 1 Apr 08 was seen as a sensible precaution to ensure that everyone is fully briefed and we are all singing off the same song sheet"

OK I'll go along with that - it seems to make sense - but where is it written down?

RAF Fitness levels

RAF Fitness levels

Well the reason behind this is simple and please be patient as its only a short winge.
I am fast approching the big 40 and have to do the raf fitness test aswell as my rofa etc anyway last week was bleep test day so up I turn and am the oldest there, anyway had this lad who is 23 and was gobbing off about how he was going to become a SF medic and his course was 4 weeks away so I thought (well then you should give me a run for my money) and I SAID I'LL TRY AND KEEP UP WITH YOU:PDT_Xtremez_08: .
ANYWAY WE GOT TO 5.3 AND HE GIVE'S UP What a w23NKER .:PDT_Xtremez_25:
so it prove's that our Royal Air Force does need to improve its fitness programme and remember WARFIGHTER FIRST :PDT_Xtremez_30:

THE BLUE THE BLUE THE COVERTED BLUE WORN BY MANY EARNED BY OH SO FEW!!!!
PER ARDUA

proof!

proof!

I read some release somewhere(from the AMP I think?) about the new standards comming in and it went on to state that "...it was been pushed out now so people had time to prepare for the new standard..." that was dated June 06 I think. Lots of time for everyone to get down the gym, but of course it must have got held up on the way down.

In Tonka City in Narfolk they are doing the new fitness test with your CCS and continue with the old system until the 1st July when the new levels apply, so if you are lucky get it done before the end of June. Only the Bleep test increases apply, with the rest requireing ratification due the girlies doing the full press up, or not as the case may be

I think the problem is that most people reading the Techie comments interpret them to mean we don't want to go to the Gym, But I'd love to go in works time as I am busy outside work with my family etc.

As an example how many lineys here have been told that things like this WILL happen or that there will be NO flying on the weekends and the first time the flying programme might be affected it's all Change.

It's not that we don't want it it's more like we know it'll get shelved/changed the minute it affects the flying programme. Call me cynical but I've seen it myself too often before.

.............................................................................................................................

Spot on!!! An example of this is when they changed the shift cycle at NLS Kinloss, instead of 24 hr manning all week we have the weekends off apart from the souls on "ops" cover. As it turns out 4 out of 5 weekends bods from the duty shift have to come in to work the jets.

The flying program comes first, always will do, but I would love time off to go down to the gym.

Now to fuel this fire a little more.

Do you think that it's fair that the ladies should have lower levels to attain?

In this world of equality they get paid the same as the guys and do the same job as the guys in the same places. The powers at B obviously don't realise that a lassie trying to outrun a jingly will be persued for longer than a geezer on the run, as the jawas seem to find more publicity in the capture and display of a splitarse on TV. For this reason alone I think the levels should be reversed and all the spunk bowsers should have that extra 5 minutes twisting their ankles at each end of the pretty boys hall.

No Sh1t, after read this and other threads about fitness - All we see are excuses from SOME members of the RAF as to why they should not get to the gym, If they put the effort into getting in the Gym as they do in getting out of it, we would have a lean fit Air Force.

I would like to see compulsory PT at least twice a week, maybe three times. I think a lot of people would welcome it. Some people go to work, go home, go to work, go home. This would be a welcome distraction from the grind.
Whether we could manage it and still keep enough for cover etc is another thing.

Well here at ISL the Staish has decreed that EVERYONE will do 2 compulsary sessions a week in WORK time.........

In real terms on our sqn this means once a week MAXIMUM ...IF we have sufficient manpower....which like this week we do not so compulsary PT was cancelled.....oh well at least they go through the motions......just like having a sh!te really.....

What PT do you have to do?

Circuits? Volleyball?

Depends on the Jengo as he is our "local" PT rep, blah blokey, but in the last 3 weeks it has been mainly doing what we want. Some go on the machines in the gym, some play fagball on the astroturf, some of us play squash........the main gym always seems to be being used by someone else doing bleep tests etc.

I don't mind doing sessions if they are enjoyable...once a ball-ache no-one will turn up.

Gonna have to do some "alternative" PT for the next 3 weeks.......raising the right hand with a beer in some sh!tey hotel.....oh well, needs must. I tried my hardest to get off the fecker, they said i gotta go so gonna make the most of it .....probably my last ever det in the RAF.........i don't intend to remember much of it !!

Crack on................ :PDT_Xtremez_09:

Sounds all well and good for the larger stations.

My mini Unit has 25 on the payrole with sometimes only around 6 at work at any one time due to shift work, OOA and Courses. WTF is a PTI, oh that gadgie 35 miles away at my parent Unit we only see when he has to look at our portacabin Gym. The RAF have provided us with a Gym membership to offset the lack of facilities however that is 20 miles away, in the firms time sounds good, but not across the board, non of us have failed our test yet.
