Was that when you were doing your skiving...I mean PT training?
You still doing that? You must be fit as a butcher's dog by now mate?

Its coming along alright cheers mate, i reckon i might be able to pass it in about 54 more days (only 55 working days left in now):PDT_Xtremez_28:
wonder what our wobbly will say to that?

Nice one. Are you going to do it on your last day then? :PDT_Xtremez_31:

Oh by the way that knee support didn't fit me. I must have fat legs!
I'm soooo ugly! :PDT_Xtremez_42:

On The Wing (thumps fist to chest), we have compulsary PT twice a week and have had for some time...

People on the Ops flights dont have any trouble attending (because if we're not deployed we're often doing nothing!), but the lads in the shed have expressed some concerns as it interferes with their workload.

However with the OOA dets, the guards, the Continuation trainings, the duty fuels, and the UK exercises i must confess to not being able to participate as much as Id like to!

With all that running around you must be fit anyway.

I have worked on 1st and 2nd line on aircraft Sqns. My fitness has gone up when working 2nd line because we had a regular lunch time like a lot of the air force. Many Sections get PT sessions or time scheduled to allow personnel time to train. Working on a busy flying Sqn, we get no time at all to go training, now I hear you all screaming "do it in your own time" which is a fair comment but not really fair when the RAF expects you to be fit but does nothing to help certain trades get fit. Fly fly fly is the Sqn commanders motto and will never allow regular PT sessions, if people get time to train then the RAF can complain when people fail the AFT, however if no time is scheduled it will only lead to more court cases when people are forced to leave.

Do we need test twice a year? maybe not but it sounds like another idea thats gone the way of the deployment fitness test..remember that one!QUOTE]

Yes, we are still doing it here at BZN, only it's now a Fitness EXPERIENCE rather than a test. Funny thing though, in all my time on Wokkas and Harriers I can't remember digging gravel out of a pre-made slit trench, usually full of stones, clay and roots.

NB Mirror Tech confirmed new levels Apr 08

Its ok pushing the levels up, but without the time to get to the gym within the working hours is always going to throw up failures.

I/We see that different sections of the station can afford to attend the 3 lunchtime circuit sessions during work time, as they can leave about 11-45am to go the gym to be back at 1-15pm to start work again.

For the people on the flight line, squadrons, aircrew etc, there is simply no time to pop down to the gym during the working day. Maybe on the odd chance when they are night flying, but when the time comes, you find that you dont have your kit with you, prepped.

Its ok saying that you can use the gym on-site, but people sometimes need to have someone shouting at them to work harder in the gym, otherwise you can simply programme a 30min run in, and press the STOP button when you get tired, bored. There is no stop button in the gym.

You simply say do the gym work after work time, or before. Well what happens if you live out, and that means you travel 25-30mile a day from lincoln, spalding etc. You cant just pop into the gym as you have up too 45mins travelling time before and after work. Therefore the 9hr day, is pushed out too 11hrs already before you get home.

Ive failed the fitness test before, though im sure enough fit to do my job.

I would like to see the raf kick someone out, or fail to promote them over the RAF FT, when they person is perfectly capable of carrying out the duty they get paid for.

I imagine it would not be long before the difference between the male & female levels were pointed out, and used against them.

Both males and females carry out the same job. They both should be tested up too the same level.

Take 2 people from the same age group, at the same age.

Give a male a burgen, webbing and rifle and ask him to run.
Give a female a burgen, webbing and rifle and ask her to run.

My money would be on the male performing better in all areas.

It's taken a little creative thinking on the part of the Sqn WO, but there is a cunning plan which will allow the guys on my Sqn to take part in PT during work time without impacting on the flying programme. It can be done, and it will have to be done if we are to be as fit as CINC wants us to be.

The problem is that the multi stage fitness test is not a level playing field for all concerned.

Consider three males of the same age. One weighs 12 stone the others weigh 14 and 16 stone respectively.

Put them on a treadmill and run at a set speed for a minute, increasing 0.5 kmph every minute until they reach level 8 to 10 and compare the calorie burn each experiences.

Now compare the calorie burn experienced by each person when they have to accelerate then stop, turn and start again. You will find that the heavier person puts in a lot more work to achieve the same result. So, the people who may be carrying more weight due to excess body fat (as opposed to build) are having to do more as well as probably being less fit in the first place. Factor in those people with knackered knees/ankles from years of sport or scrabbling around in the back of a Sea King and the MSFT doesn't reflect the actual 'fit for purpose' level of fitness.

Perhaps we do need something along the lines of CFT. Lugging a backpack x miles across country and putting up a 12 x 12 at the end complete with camo may be more of an indicator of fitness if you are on a SH Sqn but perhaps Samsonite handling and checking in drills would be more suitable for those posted elsewhere.

Don't know the rules on quoting youself but did it anyway.

The Staish as Cot said something along the lines of, probably not his own words, that individuals should be fit enough to carry out hard work, and then recover quickly and do some more hard work......

Therefore the fitness test is justified as a task based assessment and should be the same level for every one, as we should all carry out the same tasks (warfighter first tradesman second blah blah blah), now we now this isnt going to happen, but why maintain that it is based on VO2max levels whilst argueing that it is task based.

Anymore thoughts?

Fitness tests TWICE a year .

Increased fitness levels . (Old Rumour)

Mandatory 3 x 50 minute sports period per week .

Flt Cdrs to be responsible for making it work.

No Duff!

Brilliant......theres people higher up the food chain getting friggin paid to think of things like this.

Bring it on. I think that we should all be doing this it would ensure that fitness levels in the RAF are maintained and there would be no excuse for failing the test.

It's official. Policy letter from the PEd Branch on the RAF intranet states that as of 1 Oct 07 fitness test will be six monthly.

1 Oct 07 to 31 Mar 08 will be at current levels with participants 'encouraged' to get to the new levels to give them an idea of how much work they may need to do to pass next year.

Levels are going up as previously mentioned. Also number of press ups and sit ups are increasing as well as WRAFs having to do proper press ups.

Expect much whingeing as twice as many fitness tests to supervise, personnel being released from work and admin staff chasing up defaulters and failures.

This won't be a huge problem....everyone left in the RAF will be on first name terms very soon......2 pages of a filofax will be all thats left in !

As to more fitness tests, you lot crack on......i'll be on resettlement/leave/terminal leave by then......hope you enjoy your new RAF.

Crack on.............:PDT_Xtremez_09:

Totally agree, but you need to add a bit on the end of your statement.....

Can't wait til the "new RAF" kicks in, get rid of the the fat useless wasters who have done their time.....pension time at 40...can't beat it.

Exactly, get rid of the useless lazy winging spineless ****e SNCO's, who keep saying they can't wait to get out. "Done my time" - Doing fcuking what???

Well the ones I know have been to the gulf about 14 or 15 times so have 'done thier time' doing the do, what have you done your time doing then?

Like I said, the useless lazy winging spineless ****e SNCO's, which there are a plenty. Done time in the Gulf, so what, haven't we all for fcuk sake. You know what I blame mostly for the increasing PVR rate of SAC's - sh1t NCO's and Officers.
