PAYD Bringing ISS To Its Knees

"Italian Chicken" seems to be another favourite of theirs at the mo, basically a scabby meatless chicken thigh/leg with a bit of seasoning on. rank.

As a customer of this ISS organisation ask for your money back if the meal isn't as described.

I can concur with Mentalist about the AT base in Oxon, at the weekend its only us Auggies that are in the mess and that's only because our block doesn't have any catering facilities. Everyone moans about it and more people every weekend are opting for a Spar lunch and a take away in the evening as its death by cottage pie here, last month it was offered as the core meal on Fri evening and then Sat evening.

The comments book in the JRM was removed after a week with a note that it is available on request.

Well at our secret North Yorks Comms Hub I had the rare "pleasure" of using the JR mess last week for dinner, had a "Chicken" curry which I swear had 2 bits of chicken in it with what must have been a whole roughly chopped onion. Due to exercises/IPDT and other reasons the place was packed with all sorts of ranks, however only 1 person on the till, no/not enough food out and what you did you get was cold by the time you'd paid for it. I can only sympothise with those that rely on that mess daily, alas the SNECs mess is no better.

I thought P1 students weren't allowed to have PAYD...They certainly aren't at a Secret Training camp in Leafy Buckinghamshire...Sent from my iPad2 using Tapatalk
It's still being trialed. The whole 3 protein, 2 Carb etc rubbish is in force with the stupid sized portions but you can have seconds if everyone else has been fed. July was the last I heard that it will be fully implemented.

Oh. I thought some JSP said there should be more. Thats sh1t.

You're right. If I get chance tomorrow I'll dig out the reference.

I think that I could have given it before in another PAYD thread. If anyone is desperate and can't wait until tomorrow they can search the earlier PAYD threads.

The complaints book was also removed from the SNECS mess after a complaint about the chefs refusal to cook an omelette. Apparently they had sent all their staff on some kind of brief, at lunch time. There's feck all else worth having in there. The scabby Italian chicken as mentioned by Adyeflog also makes a regular appearance here under different names.

And you should try the 'Cornish Pasty' available on the more expensive snack menu. They should, and probably could be done under the trades descriptions act

When I visit one of the other factories owned by my employer I get a chance to eat in the canteen, for around £2.50 I get a plate full of well prepped and tasty food all cooked by a former RAF Chef, all made fresh not out of packet, he mentions it quite a bit.

If take up is down the chef has to explain why and sort it out pronto, and if I go there for a training day I get it for free with a pudding and can of pop.

The problem with PAYD is that the RAF is the customer not the service person

I've never eaten in my dinner hall but I've seent the queue for it start to form 10 mins before it opens and I'm assured that the £3.50 for a 2 course lunch is really value for money...as previously stated we are the customers and not a non-elected commitee of people getting a command or staff tour tick in the box...

Who cares if the complaints book has to be asked for...get asking for it and form a long and orderly queue until things improve or proof of any breach of contract, including the one that says they are to supply edible food, is found and sticks...You've got to do this sort of thing for yourself IMO.

In my mess's case make little difference, plenty of people write in it, I think they've even had to add some more pages.

It's how it's written as well though, think of it like an SJAR, it's all about facts not about emotion.

Wel I have already started my shopping at Asda for my lunch. No more eating in the mess for me personally. I really have to wonder if any of the messes will be able to sustain the losses but as somebody pointed out , this is the start of the MOD refusing to offer food all across the board now. Soon it will be the removal of food when OOA then rates when you on detatchment. Soon as everyone does it then it will be the norm after a few years then lead to messing shutting down and money saving excercise done.

I think he actually means charging people for food whilst OOA.

Is there only 1 choice of core meal? I thought there had to be more than 1....

The document that details the requirments is JSP456 Defence Catering Manual - Volume 4 (Catering, Retail and Leisure). That is available on the intranet (therefore, I can't qoute it directly on here). The key chapter is Chapter 6 - Menu Policy. This chapter details the requirements for the 'Core Offer': in particular:

Para 605 includes provision of Veggy option on demand; catering diverstiy (gender, race, religious belief, medical requirments and lifelstyle choices) on demand; portion size (iaw JSP404); healthier options.

Para 606 details the number of choices to be made available for lunch and dinner. these are based on Average uptake per mess (though doesn't define if this is mean, mode, or median). The minimum requirement for dinner is 2 hot protein dishes, salad bar to order, catering diversity to order, 2 choices of potatoes, 2 choices of vegetables of side sald, 1 choice of hot sweet, 2 choices of cold sweet. Core meals should be designed to deliver a minimum of 3300kcals for the 3 meals in the day.

Hope this helps.

Doesn't it kinda take the homeliness and tradition out of being a member of historically one of the most elite clubs in the world (snecs/O's mess) when you have you broken down into such stark terms??

Going back to the comment about food being removed from the table (pun intended) at home or whilst OOA...The yanks have always operated a 'look after yourself' system whilst on their own bases and when I joined them I found it quite satisfying to choose where I would dine that evening (BK, Chow hall, pizza hut or even off base etc) but it only works if you are paid to do so i.e. it is allowed for in your wages...money is still saved from not having to 'keep' all the facitilies a full 3 tier messing system demands. Again whilst OOA if you recieved allowances rather than just being told when and where (and what to an extent) to eat would it be so bad? Allow market forces to build a competitive food market at your location and enjoy the choice it could supply?
