Dare I suggest that the ref should never have been in a position to influence the table? If Scotland had done the business against the lesser teams then the final game would have been of no consequence, qualification would already have been assured.

Scotland have nobody to blame but themselves.

That said they have exceeded expectations - NOBODY thought they would take six points from the frogs and to be honest I thought they would struggle against the faroes!:PDT_Xtremez_28:

Ah, drawing with Macedonia and Israel surely "lesser" teams looks to have cost the English.

Dont know who is more arrogant, the fans, players or the media

Alex McLeish

Alex McLeish

Real shame that Mcleish has left, and with all due respect, especially since he has gone to an unsettled Premeirship team.
I think it is a step down for him, guiding Scotland to thw WC 2010 would have made him even more attractive to a bigger club.
Who knows what is happening with the takover at Birmingham and he could esily find himslelf managing in the Championship ab is reputation taking a massive dent.

I fully agree - what I said about Scotland stands for England too.

I really hope you werent accusing me of arrogance over my statement though. I was merely pointing out that the ref wasnt the one who cost you qualification, it should have been over before then. You cant possibly tell me that when you planned the route to qualification you thought 'Oh yes, the world champs in the last game - that'll be a breeze. Deffo 3 points!'

If the ref had given the free kick the way it should have gone in the last minute, we'd have booted the ball up the park and ended with a 1-1 draw against the world champions.
Although still needing the Ukraine to beat France, there would have been more at stake in that match making our garlic eating cousins a bit more nervy.
Never mind, the press seem to be calling it a heroic failure but surely Scotlands campaign was a heroic success after the past few years efforts.
Roll on the World Cup qualifiers, only 4 decent teams to beat.

Not at all. Just the media and fans in general. There was no arrogance in scoland leading up to game, but it was definitly over hyped.

I agree about the ref. 1st goal was school boy, very slow to react and just showed total lack of concentration. Really not typical of previous games. was never a free kick but it still had to be defended, Fletcher lost his man, and Gordon was suspect.

Dissapointed AM didnt see the job through too 2010. He could have made himself even more attractive to a bigger club

It was never a free kick but it still had to be defended. And we did that very poorly.
Who knows what would have happened in Ukraine if France had needed result.
1-1 would have been desrved, and we could have sneaked it.
Toughish draw for WC. Holland and Norway are strong, obviously Holland are stronger of the two. Macedonia are tough nuts to crack but hopefully we can do it. Iceland we should beat home and away. But it defo isnt an easy group, some nail biters coming up.

Who do you want to be th new manager?
Souness is my choice. He has international experience (54 Caps) and will have the respect of the dressing room. The layers will isten to him. Only worry is that he may not be in touch with the the younger players in the SPL.

He has been unsuccsesful in his last few jobs but i think he is perfect for the jb. SFA are still in 19th Centur and Ametuerish, he would ruffle some of the blazer brigade.

The only other candidates dont really have experience in Europe or International football IMHO.

I'm with you on that Fergo, I think we should give Souness a bash. If makes an ar$e of it then Steve Mclaren is free!

We wouldn't support scotland any other way.

While the English-ness in me says have Souness, the British part says don't touch him with a barge pole, I don't believe he has left any club in a better state than when he turned up.

To be honest, I cannot understand how AM or Walter Smith before him could leave their national team to go back to club football.

For me, managing the national team is an honour you should leave only by sacking and not for the lure of club football. As a point of interest, how has this been viewed up North, maybe more to the point, as AM has come South, how was Walter Smith viewed when he went back into Jock Club football. Was he slated by the press ?

Eyebrows were raised when Smith came back to Rangers by the press but he went at thr right time. He had fixed a Scotland team and given them a real chance, maybe selfishly he though if he stayed and things went a bit awry he wouldnt get another crack of the whip.

This has been viewed very mixed. Shock at AM wages with the SFA. But it is defo being portrayed as a step down, and IMO it is a massive one.

Souness left Rangers in a great state. He took over when we were the 3rd or even 4th Force in Socttish football and with David Murray turned Rangers into the team they are. He brought in some guys that are legends at Ibrox.

Newcastle wasnt the best for him but i dont think anyone can quite put there finger on why Newcastle are such underachievers, and i mean that with all respect, they have a great Stadium, some of the best fans in the Land, money to spend and just never seem to reac the heights.
He did well at Balckburn, brought few Dunn, Duff, Jansen into the team. Won Promotion and the League Cup.
And with Galatasary and Benfica he won Trophies, Two Cups in Turkey and the Leaue in Portugal.

Souness - Rangers, well he brought in a load of foreigners (English !) and did well, nobody can ever put the finger on what goes on at Newcastle so thats a fair cop. Liverpool, he destroyed the team the year before Sky money made it the Manure Premier League, selling Peter Elephant Man Beardsley, Steve Nichol, to be fair mate I didn't think he did a lot at Blackburn though, brought in good players and not a lot else....however fair play to him there. Turkish League, eerrm, I seem to remember if you manage Galtasaray or Besiktas (complete with bolox spelling) you have a good chance.

As for AM, I guess if you look at him earning (allegedly) four times the wage with Brum he is not daft, but I think if he took the decent squad he has on a good World Cup campaign he may actually get a job with an English Premiership Team who have a chance of staying up. Big step down in Job status I believe.

I would have thought the SFA have got to look at the wages offered for the job very rapidly. On the other hand, I bet Berti Boxhead Voghts was on my than 400K a year.

Souness built a brilliant rangers team, there were some English players but he had a scottisch backbone and a few foreigners.

I totally agree on AM, if he could have taken us to 2010 his stock would have risen incredibly and he would have been attractive to bigger, more settled clubs

Souness or John Collins for me. Souness was fantastic for Rangers, and Collins has worked wonders at Hibs, especially in developing young talent. The younger members of the Scotland squad may be able to identify with him a bit more than Souness.

McCoist as part-time assistant????????

Is Souness still employable? I thought barge poles had been dished out.

Good player (ex-Boro, of course) - clueless manager. The life of an occasional TV pundit is about his capacity.
