Times Report - Cut to the Bone?

Because they learned from mistakes from the last few batch of cuts, stopping recruitment will come back and bite you years later.

I see.

So will they just recruit less in the next few years? Also with these cuts, are new recruits one of the first out, last in first out scenario? Or different?

Hell no, are you pulling my leg ?

If they need to lose 10k across the service they will slow recruiting down slightly and then shed a proportional amount of each rank, just like slicing the side off a triangle. Thats the theory, it will differ if certain aircraft types or trades are completely lost.

The Defence Review will be uncomfortable reading.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Sorry if I came across as pulling your leg!

Just slightly worried as I'm entering next early next year.

No worries, when you are in you will be safe, providing you are not joining a trade that is entirely chopped which happened to the painters and finishers a few years back, however most if not all were offered re-trading options.

Good luck

Only 1 Painter left!

Plays lots of football, but doesn't paint much anymore!

If they are wanting to cut the numbers, why do they keep recruiting thousands each year?

RTS geared up for 3600 in 09/10 and 10/11.

They are likely to be 400-600 below that figure this year. Revised figs for next year should have been released in Oct. We are still waiting!

just a thought?

just a thought?

Just my 2ps worth.

Could this be a mildly shrewd move by the head sheds?

Its only a report so it got me thinking, the RAF may be trying to pre empt (is that spelt right) the army and navy in the next round of cuts. By starting a public outcry (might happen), especially with remeberance sunday fresh in the publics mind, it could lead to greater public support for the RAF so a reduced shafting in the defence review? I dunno.

Im probably to young and naive, so still believe senior officers care about the men and women they lead, not just their pensions and climbing the greasy pole.

But think about it with all the money they save on frontline manning they can employ loads more mongs at the MOD and pay for people on the dole. :PDT_Xtremez_42:

AND BANKERS i forgot that one.

I just think its the MOD having a pop again at the Government, in other words public outcry to ensure Labour are not re-elected next year.

Its not a hidden fact that the powers above in the MOD know things will improve under a new government , comments like this just scare monger people.

Im at Kinloss and there is no talk of moving to Waddo. The MRA4 is an anti submarine a/c only and not involved in ISTAR. Waddington does not have room for any more A/c , no accomodation nothing to support a vast move. Maybe in a few years but at present there is no cash to build anything. Certain bases are covered and paid for by Nato and the UK has a commintment to keep them open as its still part of NATO , I know Kinloss is one of them bases.

Saying that maybe the UK is now ready to accept Scotland as an independent country so getting rid of them would make sense that way.

...Waddington does not have room for any more A/c , no accomodation nothing to support a vast move....

Brize doesn't have the infrastructure to support the influx from Lyneham either. The last I heard, plans were to keep the Quarters and accommodation blocks at Lyneham and make it a commute.

Hanger and ASP space would also be at a premium, could be a bit of a tight squeeze.

Its very easy for some reporter from the times to speculate and make up stuff with actually knowing the full truths, like that **** from P-prune who makes up **** in the times all the time.

after the last defence review they found that closing many of the airbases will have huge financial consequences, its easier and cheaper to keep a base open than it is to close it.

It has to be scare mongering , i tell you what though all it will do is unsettle many people again they want people to go and quit so scarily it makes perfect sense

Roll on pension day

I wouldn't worry about accom for you guys down here...Theres plenty of unused buildings and quarters they could slap some magnolia on and call grade 3 around the county and buses to get you in!

The MR4 is very much an ISTAR platform...If you get airborne (a battle in itself these days) and turn the kit on there's a chance you will gain some Intelligence...in the transit and once on patrol you are Surveilling your assigned area and its fringes...If you are tasked on ASUW (or even ASW if you bring in another asset) and you find something to shwack then you'll need something to come shwack it for you which is Target Aquisition...Recconaissance is the meat and two veg of a Nimrod life in its original and most suited role...Also does it not have a Westcam?

Why wasn't I surprised when I read the journo's report? - because 20 years ago whilst I was doing a tour at the Huntingdon Happy Eater, there was a paper doing the rounds with exactly these proposals. There was a lot of huffing and puffing in an "it'll never happen" sort of way, but the writing was on the wall. The Berlin Wall had been breached and the enemy - aka The Treasury - was demanding the peace dividend.

What sort of proposals affecting the Royal Navy or the Army were doing the rounds at the same time I don't know, but I'm pretty sure the RAF paper wasn't on its own.

What I find worrying, apart from being saddened by what is happening to my former service, is the ever-increasing weakening of the defence of this country by the reduction of the capabilities and resources of all three Services. It appears to me that we are being stripped and weakened, by subscribers of a particular political ideology, to the point whereby we have to rely on other countries for our defence or we roll-over at the very first hint of a threat. I don't think any useful purpose is being served at the moment by any one service slagging off the other two, despite shouts of glee from certain areas of our khaki-clad brethren. I think the point has been reached where all the services should be shouting with one voice "No more cuts".

Comrade Brown has already signalled a further step in achieving one of Liarbours long-standing goals - that of nuclear disarmament - through his recent announcement on the replacement of the current deterrent. How much longer before we reach the point where the only umbrella we have is the one that keeps the rain off our heads?

Ok smarty pants lol , yeah does have Wescam but it needs some work. We have been told we will not go to anything else apart from MP, but I can see in the next 5 years a change back to ISTAR tasking as its a multi role A/C . Money is just the problem at the moment as you all aware to improve the A/C , 5 more years I say and we will be back in the gulf , will be a good result as im missing it already :PDT_Xtremez_19:
