Times Report - Cut to the Bone?

Ah well, I'm willing to find out the hard way!

As for the fly em or fix em comment. I'd like to see how well you coped with flying them or fixing them with out any ICT support, which in the case of TG4 covers a very wide range of support due to the amalgamation of two previous TGs.

Like it or not, everything requires ICT support these days.

Sadly, You are correct!!

Meanwhile back on topic.....

It was never off topic.

The RAF needs to adust and ukhursty is unfortunately correct. (The Masked Geek is now jumping for joy)

Software techies will become just as important as aircraft techies on a sqn.

Take a look at A400M. The current aircraft in service are stone age compared to this baby. And yes, it doesn't need so many people to look after it so some must say goodbye!!

I stand by what I say, it's an opinion so don't get your knickers in a twist over it. We had one computer on my section when I was in. It was in the AP library and I don't think I saw anyone use it in the 7 years I was there...

Still, as ole tashy says - crack on!!

Even at late 80's prices it cost around 3.2m to build and was shut down less than 2 years after the grand opening. They can close, change the use of, civlianise anywhere they like without actually having to provide us prolls with an explanation. Abingdon, Finningley,Watta shambles, Chivenor, Colt, the list is pretty long of places closed in recent years without going back to far. So what if money has been spent and facilities improved at a unit that has never stopped things being closed in the past.

Abingdon, Wattisham and Chivenor all went to the army, Colt to the justice ministry and finningly to the council for robin hood airport I think. So still in government hands so no need to turn it back to farm land. However the army wanted to close Abingdon and hit upon the return to original use clause.

I'd disagree with that statement myself. Yes we can't do anything without the actual IT assets. However, as the whole world and their dog is computer literate these days; the support; large portions of which consists of phoning a retard in the SPOC, isn't as necessary as you make out

Not even in yet and chopsing off to people who have been in the air force longer than he has been on the planet about things he has heard second hand (at best) and has no real knowledge of.

You will fit straight in to TG4 mate.

No ICT support? THere isn't any at the minute! "Hello, SPOC, whats the problem?"

"My computer is buggared."

"We'll call an engineer."

FFS, I could fix the damn thing myself! I'd also bet theres a lot of people in that have a lot more IT knowledge and experience than any TG4 cnut.

Meanwhile, back on topic. Now find myself questioning if it's worth carrying on with the rest of my service or banging out. Never ever been tempted to PVR before, but all this chopping and changing is demoralising a lot of people who no longer see the prospect of a long term career.

TBH, it seems like he has an attitude & likes to gob off. More suited to TG1.

While I would normally agree, he is probably lacking in the other qualifications required to be a TG1 god.

He needs to have an attitude and like gobbing off but he also needs to be stunningly attractive to the opposite sex and have the unerring ability to be always right as well, untill these traits are mastered he is just not going to cut it as one of the chosen ones.

Yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!

Blah, blah, chosen ones.....

Soon the chosen ones will be downsized and replaced by civvies.

In fact, does that make civvie contractors demi-gods? Or are they all cnuts? So, if that is the case, by default, all a/c techs are cnuts! Logical reasoning derived from RAF techs view of civvies....

What you have descibed above is, as we all know; Aircrew ;o)

What you meant to say is aircraft techies that have mastered software (which is easy even the armourers can do that) will be just as important as arcraft techies.
On a serious note do they have TG4 on aircraft software teams?

I have been thinking the exact same the last few weeks, so much seems to be changing and its definately not for the better. I understand the country is broke and we in the military are going to have to take a huge hit but when it comes to the safety of doing my job correctly I am starting to doubt we are getting the correct support from our masters above. I hope in vain for a change but I know its not going to happen but like i said before i cling to the hope it will get better.

The problem that the Labour party, and any future government, has is that Haddon-Cave has put the blame of a large percenatge of the RAFs problems squarely down to manpower issues. We need more bods on the shop floor and less managers, this has been recognised on high but there are still people in charge who will do anything to protect the 'old boys network'.
I recommend reading Haddon-Cave to any of you, it puts things back into reality. The problem that I have is that it wont be acted on for two primary reasons:
1. Lack of money from successive governments that have no understanding of modern warfare. They'd rather spend what money is available on the socially and morally inept .
2. There are too many people in a position of authority who are interested in nowt but themselves. They don't care about the RAF as long as they become a member of the upper house!

Indeed your entitled to your opinion, but I'm just trying to have a debate, and deduce peoples reasons for washing their hands of the trade I'm going in for.

Maybe if you gave a reason as to why you think TG4 is not a good trade, rather than not bothering, because its easier to pass judgement on my current status.

Of course I don't know much about the RAF yet, as people have been in for years, but at least I'll come on here and ask questions to learn and find out more.

If that constitutes as 'gobbing off' in your book, then so be it, but I just want to be as clued up and as fully prepared as possible for when I do start training.

Lets draw a line under the TG4 stuff in this thread, which is about cuts not trade bashing. There are plenty of dedicated TG4 threads around if you wish to search for them...

Hot news, it was all a bad dream

there seems to have been a monumental shift with regards to monetary, defence as well as industrial focus.

to not only improve its military and defence capabilities, but also that of the industrial and economic sectors as a whole.

the government has clearly felt the need to boost investment in order to reverse the negative growth trend witnessed over the past fiscal year.

Simple procurement in the manner of ‘repeat purchasing’ will find no room in this new structure, therefore enhancing both improved competition from contracts, as well as more finely tuned and appealing equipment and facilities

The government has also made its intentions clear with regards to wanting to not only improve and boost all forms of infrastructure within the defence sphere, but also focus on contributing towards an economic stimulus package that will play an active role in domestic job creation.

The past quarter has also seen a clear emphasis on the upgrade, and the purchase of, new and technologically advanced equipment and software, to aid the sector during this period of ‘recovery’.

government detailing a contract signed with the Boeing Company for the purchase of 15 new Chinook helicopters for the national defence system. The contract valued at US$1.2bn comes at a pivotal time for the industry,

has publicly driven home the message that the Canadian defence sector will spend whatever is necessary to ensure not only a world class defence sector, but one that is equipped to ensure national safety from threats both domestically, as well as abroad.

Oh bugger! wrong country.

I've always thought the problems the forces now face primarily stem from a lack of (experienced) manpower across all three services. So many experienced and dedicated personnel have jumped ship in the last few years that the chicken really has come home to roost so to speak.

Like I pointed out to some muppet droning on about a lack of Chinooks in theatre - if we got 30 Chinooks tomorrow, who is going to crew and maintain them?

If people are the most valuable resource then the military is well and truly bankrupt!
