OK. I only got round to watching this tonight, so given all the comments on here I thought I would try, whilst watching, to imagine that I was a civvy and know nothing about the RAF and the fact that the vast majority of guys and girls are slogging their guts out, giving their pound of flesh for the duration of their tour.
And the upshot of this was that personally, if I was a 17/18 year old, having just left school with zero qualifications and not many prospects other than a job in Primark, I reckon that having seen this programme, the RAF looks like a pretty tasty option.
However I am not civvy so I can see where many of the negative comments on this thread are coming from but jeez the programme was not about the more serious side of our role when out of area. They have purposefully sexed it up to appeal to Joe Public with no links to the forces and no clue about what really goes on to keep the jets in the air and the airfield safe.
I have sat and thought about haw Kate came across in the programme and granted she appears to be a typical dizzy bint. But she is a young girl who just seems quite naive and was only doing what most young girls her age do when they finish work. Going out and letting her hair down a bit (and unfortunately, putting her gob in gear before engaging the brain).
What she was filmed doing/not doing, with regards to toddling to showers in just a towel, not wearing body armour, going to the "disco" etc is what goes on when OOA. Granted not all of us have the luxury of enough downtime to get any socialising and sunbathing in, as well as get a good nights kip, but for those 9 to 5'ers, why not?
If the one result from this programme is a tightening up and enforcing the IDF immediate action drills then to me that is a result. I was out in Basrah during a particularly "active" time and people just couldnt be arsed and just went through the motions, which would grip my $hit no end!
At the end of the day, the programme has achieved its aim. To be an hour long recruitment advert for the trades of Regt and HR.
Was it honest? Yes I think so.
Did it show the RAF as a professional military outfit? Probably not, because it has concentrated on a dizzy admin bint and a wet behind the ears rock and not the guys and girls doing 12+ hour days keeping jets in the air or providing medical care or taking part in convoys to get kit from A to B (because that wouldn't make interesting viewing to anyone not in the Forces).
Do I give two hoots what our Army cousins are saying about it over on ARRSE? Nope. Especially after seeing the behavior of some of their young female soldiers in Basrah!
OK thats my twopence worth anyway.
