BBC saying if the UN vote yes to the no fly zone over Lybia (in the next hr or so) then RAF Jets could be in action over the contry tomorrow!!!!!!

I know were good but unless theres a hidden sqn or two out there then I very much doubt it!!!!!

The problem was Mad Gad had nowhere to go, he's ****ed off all his neighbours and all the usual countries that would take him, Venesula exempted (although I guess North Korea would let him in too). His money was frozen before he could get to it and he's off his head at the best of times - what did we expect.

He'll take his fight to the end and those who support him may want to do a quick reappraisal, especially now that Tripoli is getting hit; big.

Now where are the Army who have decided that the're priority #1, apart from a bit of CSAR lying/flying around I guess there nowhere to be found on this one.

makes sense

And to save sending us away and get allowences we seem to just be flying from blighty, "in longest bombing raid since FI war." bbc/Sky said MOD confirm this.

It's not that far, and we can cut across France. US had to go the long way round last time. Would use as much fuel going straight to AKI and back. Saves transporting bombs to aki too.

Wonder if they came back or headed for the sunshine? Don't answer that anyone by the way!

Some rough calcs would suggest it's about 15 minutes difference in transit (from a Southern ish base in the UK)...that'd be 15 mins more from the UK but you wouldn't have to keep so much fuel in your tanks for 'island holding' as you may going back to Cyprus.

Can someone refresh my memory: Why did the US bomb Gaddaffi in '86??

America said it was exercising its right to self defence as defined by Article 51 of the UN charter.
Aka retaliation against the bombing of a west German night club which killed a couple of american servicemen.

I think Libyan agents killed some US embassy staff on Gaddafi's orders so the spams went for him. Pity they didn't get it right.

At that time the Spams didn't possess an effective anti tent weapon. Although they did blow the cr@p out of his house.

Cheers, I remember now. I was at Gut' at the time and remember watching it down the Bowl on the news. As we watched, there was a tannoy recalling the Armourers to the Stn Armoury - cue mass panic. We all thought we were off !!!

That is what air power is about... long reach, hard, accurate punches!

Anyone know if the Army has any artillery that can reach that far?::P:

I was at Brize as a Radar Assistant in Brize Radar on the night of the raid. Watched the EF111s get airborne from Upper Heyford and the KC135s get airborne from Fairford. Then went to pick up the shift hot-lock suppers from the JRM and watched the chef arguing with a bloke who wanted a larger portion - surreal. IIRC the next day 19 Sqn RAF Regt were recalled from exercise around Upper Heyford and Fairford and stagged on as we went to Bikini RED - in the days before we were routinely live-armed on the gate.

And if you think about it, post WW1 when the whole military structure was collapsed. Trenchard kept the 'Youngest' Service in being by policing the Middle East, because it was cheaper than brown job boots on the ground.

That'll be the first RAF Bombing Raid from East Anglia/UK since 1945, won't it?
