Anyone heard any more speculation/information on when it's rumoured to be? It seemed to be the generally held belief that it would be 'after the Scottish elections', but I haven't seen anything that mentions a specific date.

Is it now a straight fight between Lossie and Leuchars, and possibly one other?

I'm talking about the station as a whole surviving. As for individuals getting posted, well that I pretty much expected. I currently work 2nd line up at Lossie and I'm fully aware that 2nd line support amongst others will be some of the first things to go as far as the drawdown of gr4 is concerned. No point crying over it, id quite happily stay up here but I'm under no illusions that I will be!

Meself as a Singly am happy enough to move, theres some proper teddies flying round here tho lol , we'll still have have had a 3 year tour(ish), just move on to another of lifes adventures!!!!
 
It is refreshing to read the views of some service people who truly are just that and accept that they will be posted and as the Bible says, "bend like reeds in the wind" to the vagaries of service life.

What is not, and altogether a little undedifying is the wailing and gnashing of teeth about an RAF camp that owed its existence to political expediency rather than asset enhancement!

By the way, the fate of Marham was never,ever in any doubt! There wasnt this amount of rending of garments over Lyneham!

Leuchars is closing, oh dear, what a shame, never mind! Jog on!!!

I wish I did know it all....but you cannot steal an airshow...I mean what do you steal it in, a big van perhaps? those horrid Lossie Pikeys come and steal your airshow? Get over it!

MOD legal status on Leuchars

A few folk here are querying the terms that the Air Ministry bought the land that Leuchars is built on. Sent FOI request to MOD to find out .

I assume if the terms state something like "UK air defense, or it HAS to be an airbase" then turning it into an army garrison with no aircraft means they're breaching the terms of ownership?

I'm not sure who will care about the results? Are they going to reverse the move? No
 
Wild stab in the dark.....
The land was requisitioned for use by the RAF. Moving the army in would break the 'contract' that was signed/agreed so you can't move the army in after all and the RAF have to stay!
It's like getting a hangar 'listed' in an attempt to stop your base being closed...
I really doubt the MOD didn't look at all of this while the plan being worked on... There's looking for loop holes and clutching at straw's... At the moment i think some people are grabbing fresh air.

Heard it all at Kinloss, if you close it the land has to be given back to the previous owner, in the condition it was in when the MOD/RAF took it over, etc, etc. It's all rubbish the MOD (Defence Land) own the site... I'll bet it's the same for Leuchars
 
iirc Bawdsey manor was tied in somehow,when the RAF finnished with it,rumour was it had to be offered back to the family for the price the then air ministry had paid in the 1930s,did a night shift to let the fire section attend the camp closure p up,stunned when all the leaders of men left early to get the transport back to mqs,it would of course been bad manners to turn down all the drinks we were offered!

Hi All Scots law of contract very strict. Land would make good pasture. The listed hangers with the air conditioning and non -slip floors a super piggery. Aslo the airfield has two Bird reserves North and South of it. Possible a Binbrook situation or if partial a Wittering. A farmer or two might have their hopes up.

leuchars has been RAF since 1920 . All defence planning said stay RAF. No one in this area wnated anything else we have around 3,000 jobs generated as a result of the £60 plus input into our local economy. At it moment it looks like in the region of 2,100 are gone. NE Fife has about 72,000 of a total population. Our jobs losses in recent years have been the Guardbridge paper mill-almost 400 . Cupar dairy 70 .Numerous hotels going on minium staff. RAF Leuchars is the last big generator of employment in this area apart from the University of St.Andrews. As you will guess it is useful to have a degree if you want to go after the type of work offered by the Varsity. There is a greaty deal of worry about the future not to mention great anger. Dr. Fox has not yet showed up to speak. Local paper says he might actually have guts to turn up
