Base Closure Annoucement

Anyone heard any more speculation/information on when it's rumoured to be? It seemed to be the generally held belief that it would be 'after the Scottish elections', but I haven't seen anything that mentions a specific date.

Is it now a straight fight between Lossie and Leuchars, and possibly one other?

If CINC says the decision was made only recently then that is the truth of the matter; that man does not know how to lie.

However, the closure of Leuchars was always the most likely result of the basing review despite the money spent on Typhoon support because it would never have made any sense (politically) to close Kinloss & Lossie. I suggest your "dining out" was due to educated guesswork, no more, no less.

Oh no TBJ don't deny septic his moment of arrogant glory! He thinks HE'S the CINC!!!

I am sure I dont know your man, however if that is what he says, then that is what he believes is fact. The truth remains that in October last year, it was announced that two out of three would close, and by December, the advice, it wasnt counsel, it was advice,, was to retain Lossiemouth. That was clearly reported in the press. It was extremely disingeuous of the local press to stir up hope when there was none. And since when have ACMs gone to bases to announce closures, has the RAF gone soft. There was no ACM briefing at Gan, or Changi, St Mawgan or Brawdy or Locking or even Cottesmore.

Still, it was a damned good do!

CINC AIR was once the Stn Cdr at Leuchars & AO Scotland so it's perfectly understandable that he would want to deliver the news in person. I imagine it was a rather emotional experience for him.

Some media outlets were reporting very recently that Leuchars was safe and Lossie would shut. They will print whatever sells papers. Once it was announced that the basing review would seek to close another unit in addition to Cottesmore & Kinloss it wasn't hard to realise that Leuchars was odds on favourite. Wittering & Leeming's transport links continue to be their saving grace while it was politically and/or economically unacceptable to close either Lossie or Marham or either of the helicopter units. Since SDSR began Waddo, Brize & Coningsby have been the safest units in our inventory. QED. But the process had to be thorough.

Politically, the decision to base the Typhoon at Lossie and rebadge Leuchars as an Army base is sound. To remove a 'headline' military (RAF) employer from Morayshire would have ensured an 'independent' Scotland vote in any possible forthcoming referendum on independence, from the Moray area constituencies. Especially as the Army units have a much smaller 'local income' footprint and tend to disappear OOA too frequently. Kinloss as a RAF base was doomed anyway, and the moving in of Army units is positive, albeit that it is solely politically driven. The timescale of the Leuchers transition is also very political. Whilst I take account of all the posters who give sound rationale as to why the LEU to LOS move is wrong practically, I believe they don't see the bigger target. Maintain the union of England, Wales and NI with Scotland.

When like me, you are as old as God`s dog, Leuchars was always the place that should never have been. Even in the cold war, it wasnt the strategic asset that some would believe. I think you will find that most media outlets that reported anything positive about Leuchars being safe, were of the Caledonian flavour.....even the old boys in the RAF club were talking about its demise last Christmas. It is very sad to see any military base close, but hey...for political reasons it stays open, for now, albeit with the Army....but its in the wrong place for them as well. In my time, I have seen many, many RAF stations close, but never has a senior officer of air rank delivered the coup de grace!

Good call AMEN!!!

Good call AMEN!!!

I don't think the political standpoint is viewed so often. The inadequate morons who control the RAF at government level are driven by political concerns. I don't believe our present 'Airships' are equipped to cope. Equally I believe that the present 'Airships' have probably driven the best bargain, given the ever thrusting Army 'land grab' tendancy.

You need to eat more cheese instead of drinking the port at your din dins. Turnhouse would have been the best for Q duties, due to infrastructure it was not possible; however after a 7 year study on climatic conditions and locats Q was set up at Leu. Risks have now evolved and luckily Leu still ticks the boxes, unlike Lossie. As far as your Abbeywood chat goes in the kind of "I've finished first" attitude, it does not make you a better person, it only shows a needy streak. Concerning an announcement by an airship; I worked for Wg Cmdr Bryant for a while and again when he moved up the food chain, he is one of the few high priced help that I still respect and believe. So your kangeroo dining out and your subsequent perceptions of UK air defense have unfortunately been graduated to some form of self importance. The dye is now cast as was MRA4..... who is paying for all the dye and who pays to clear the mess up.... never seems to be the officers that are actually made accountable... their get out tends to be a posting and the next rupert can have a period of grace to sort the mess out..... of course this is only my opinion that has been fashioned on past experience.

Zeebad, I cant believe how bitter you are, so go on then, I have to ask - How many years have you been in? How many years have you been at Leuchars? How many in Scotland? Do you own a house right next to Leuchars?

No, I do not have a house next to Leu or in it, got there 3 1/2 years ago and I have served a lot of my service career in Scotland. I have been in the mob for a pensionable time. What has that got to do with UK Air Defense or the fact that some rupert makes tough decisions but does not stay around to tough it out. I thought UK Air Defense was more important than constituent votes. Feel free to judge me know.

Keeping Lossiemouth

Keeping Lossiemouth

???. Lossiemouth is in an area where they weigh SNP votes. Closing it would most likely push the SNP 60 % plus vote upwards. Leuchars is in Fife North East which the SNP won from third place . Do you think the Leuchars decision will increase or decrease the independence vote. ?

It doesn't make any difference to the voting ommunity - blue or green uniforms both have an equal economic driving force in the economy, in either location. Anyhow, no-one really takes Salmond THAT seriously.

It's just going to be a bit quieter in the morning in Leuchars than it once was, and perhaps a little more violent of a night-time.

Here Here, I arrived at Leuchars when Bryant was the Stn Cmdr, and AOS. He truely loved the station and the area, and that was the only reason he arrived to make the announcement, no other. He has a real attachement to the station and felt personally let down by this decision. He obviously tried to sell the party line to everyone at Leuchars and spell the bigger picture, but it was obvious to me, and others who know him, he did not agree with it. When a man of his standing, tells an audience at Leuchars that the decision was 'up in the air' until last week, I am damn well going to believe it. What he did also say, is that the RAF were not in any discussions. They were simply contacted when needed to provide info on what, how and when. All decisions were made by politcal people.

What also sticks in the throat, whilst it was never ever seen as a competition by anyone in Fife, only minutes after the announcement, the moray SNP poilitician stood up in the commons and used the word 'Victory' over Leuchars. what a disgrace. Then, leass than 24 hours later, Dr Fox had the gaul, to jet into Lossie, and have his photo opp, whilst taken the massive applause from personel and locals. Almost like he was lapping it up. That is what really sticks in. Not the fact Leuchars is closing, that we can all handle, all that wear the Blue know we will move and carry on. But the way this has all come about, announced and since banded about.

Then less than another 24 hours later, and they are trying to steal the airshow! Leuchars still has 2 years here, and they are already campainging to have the airshow, like we are dead already. Get a grip people of Moray, ask yourself, would it have been the same had the decision been reversed. I can say, hand on heart, there would not have been 1/10th of the victory celebrations from Fife.

That's a rather bold claim to make don't you think?
Nobody wanted to see either have to close it's doors but you can't blame the "survivors" to be happy with the outcome. There are always gonna be some who go over the top but to think it wouldn't be the same had the outcome been the other way round would be rather naive.

It is, but I do feel, that throughout the time between October and now, there have far less people from the Fife area, willing parade in the streets holding banners and letting their mouth's go. I am not saying there would have been none, of course you would get many statements saying we are glad Leuchars is staying open, but I doubt many would have used the words "Victory". From a Fife point of view, it was never seen as a competition, but from the words both before and post announcement, it obviously was seen that way further north. Admittedly, not by the service people, they are simply the same as ourselves, and would have just got on with whatever, but from population around the base.

Ming Campbell + AAC at Leuchars

Ming Campbell + AAC at Leuchars

Ming Campbell MP has released a lot of stuff regarding the RAF leaving Leuchars . He says until six months ago he was told that Leuchars was not even on the change never mind closure list. Indeed it had been confirmed as the second Typhoon MOB. So what has changed? A good thriller on the way.
It is reported that the new muli-role brigades will be all arms so their might be an ACC Regiment at Leuchars.
