Base Closure Annoucement

Anyone heard any more speculation/information on when it's rumoured to be? It seemed to be the generally held belief that it would be 'after the Scottish elections', but I haven't seen anything that mentions a specific date.

Is it now a straight fight between Lossie and Leuchars, and possibly one other?

Gosh, what a load of twittering nonsense. Leuchars has for the last 30 years been totally non essential and all that I can see here is the jockenese militia having a whinge about something that was terminal in 1983. Just accept that it is closing and that, for political reasons, it will become an Army base! For the last 50 years, its proximity to a certain golf emporium plus, there are certain "airships" living in the local, have ensured this tired old anachronism stays open. this is now Op Endex, shut, closed for ever, long live the King!

According to the torygraph the decision has been made "last friday" and it's Leuchars to close

"In a separate development it is understood that RAF Leuchars is to close, leaving only one RAF airbase in Scotland. The site will become an Army barracks.

The decision to transfer the two typhoon squadrons currently based at Leuchars to RAF Lossiemouth was only finalised last Friday, although rumours of the move had been circulating for months."

It was inevitable, here come the PVRs from the people who cant live without leuchars.

The bbc have the same sort of thing!

RAF to Army

RAF to Army

Hullo from a very grim Leuchars area. No one expects much of a long term future for the base if the army moves in as the size of the cut in army numbers means that by 2020 it is a good job we do not have to fight the Boers again. To be serious if the army goes down to 84,000 that means nett only about 8,000 from Germany so when they are split among the UK not much each on the share out. If Cottesmore is getting 5 units and 3,000 plus it will not leave much for everyone else. It would have been more sensible for the Army air corps to share Leuchars with the 20 Typhoons here already

Forgot to mention the civil jobs in Fife that are on the line are aerospace profile ones .We are not dependent too much for service sector due to Golf in St.Andrews. By the way to get the £ 170 annual ticket for the St. Andrews Links you have to have your primary residence to the area designated under the 1975 links trust act . Bad news for London based brass hats then. It is a good deal by the way one round on the old course has a current fee of £140 a round. You can play as many rounds you can manage a year with the ticket.

There will be a lot of jocks fuming about this for sure, best start learning to keep quiet about the anti-english thing!!! no offence to any jocks there, but I think it will a mind-broadening experience for some....I'm English, and did a tour up and absolutely loved it...time to do the same and leave the comfort zone for some!

A bit saddend by the news. I spent 5 magic years at Leuchars during its alternative role as RNAS Guardbridge - even met Mrs 4ma whilst I was there (there has to be a down side to everything). Just wondering how Hendies and the Commie will cope with an influx of poorly house-trained grunts. I guess there will be a kind of numbness amongst the guys and girls at the moment - good luck for the future beyond Leuchars and enjoy the closure pis...beer calls.

Is Nancy still the landlady of Hendies - if she is they'll get a thick ear (not that I was EVER the recipient of one of those! :) )

spent a very happy 18 months there as a mech in the mid 70's - no HAS, private beach with barbed wire on either side, barbie site parties... loadsa skirt on camp too

Has anyone official actually stood in front of a camera yet and said its leuchars?

If the media have got hold of it and are letting everyone know that the life they knew is over then I think the people up high (RAF,MOD,and goverment) need to brief everyone ASAP. I think this is another case of the media being scumbags. If the fate of the bases in scotland is so secret the people affected havent been told yet why the hell do the media know?

I spent 4 years at Leuchars and loved it. It's a place I'd like to be posted again, the only other places I'd WANT to be sent to is Waddington and less so Coningsby.

You know the air force has shrank when there are only 3 camps you'd want to be.

****ing hate MPs. Fox isnt answering ANY questions from the other MPs about anything. It's always the case when someone making a statement is being quizzed about the finer points of it.

all his replies to the questions can be is "Labour are ****e and it was their fault"

Yep I'm getting frustrated by it too. Did anyone else think he said cosford would be moving to lyneham instead of st athan?

From the Beeb;

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-14182729

Leuchars in Fife has lost its fight to retain its RAF base, with Lossiemouth in Moray becoming Scotland's only such site.

RAF Leuchars will become an army base, with its Typhoons leaving for Lossiemouth in 2013 and the army starting to move in later.

Campaigners had been battling to keep both bases open.

Troops will also be stationed at Kinloss in Moray, which closed as an air base as part of MoD cuts.

Fort George in Inverness stays as it is for the Black Watch
Southern Scotland will get a new army training area

Fort George in Inverness will stay as it is the Black Watch base.

I think it shows the level of contempt that MP's have for us all, the house was less than a quarter full for the statement and rebutal from the other side...Thanks for .... all

100 years to the dustbin

100 years to the dustbin

Hullo all if you are in the South of England it is likely you will be able to hear the anger around here around Leuchars. I appears that the army may arrive by 2017 however the damage will be done by then. Nothing to with the SNP just bean counters deciding policy as usual . Dr Fox words are subject of a few tons of salt !

And what are the AFF hoping to achieve with this survey after the event Spike? Despite all the talk and the good intentions what are the AFF actually doing/good for? They have been keeping a very low profile if you ask me.

We were always going to lose one of the two remaining bases in Scotland, and of the two the right one is going - the state of the infrastructure is shocking for starters. Lossiemouth is much the better option...
