Base Closure Annoucement

Anyone heard any more speculation/information on when it's rumoured to be? It seemed to be the generally held belief that it would be 'after the Scottish elections', but I haven't seen anything that mentions a specific date.

Is it now a straight fight between Lossie and Leuchars, and possibly one other?

Apart from ESS, GSS etc funny that the people who 'kept lossie open' wont be there to enjoy it....... peeps you have shot yourselves square in the size 8's lol and you aint even bright enough to see it. Face facts there will be no jobs for you at all.............ENJOY MARHAM!!!!!!!!!!!!

And what are the AFF hoping to achieve with this survey after the event Spike? Despite all the talk and the good intentions what are the AFF actually doing/good for? They have been keeping a very low profile if you ask me.

We were always going to lose one of the two remaining bases in Scotland, and of the two the right one is going - the state of the infrastructure is shocking for starters. Lossiemouth is much the better option...

Ill informed fookin Idiot!!!! sorry

I find it hard to believe; I wonder at which rank level and which service Dr Liam got his re-heated slice of cold war pie from.... unless I am mistaken the integrity of the UK Air Defence has now been brought into question for the fact that the last 25+ years it was situated in a prime locat for northern cover. It seems there has been to much emphasis on the word "Northern" when applied to QRA, I would like to meet the man behind the intel and Dr Liam to discuss the newly approved risk assessment.

Perhaps if you stepped back and looked at the large canvas of what is happening and stopped being selfish and insular about your "pet" airbase you may be able to rationalise why it had to happen. Most of the emotion on this thread are from Scottish people, in the RAF serving in Scotland. Surely when you put on a uniform you agree to serve wherever you are sent, take whatever is thrown at you by your seniors or are people in the light blue now just civil servants with a nice uniform?

the fact that its got rail links that can be upgraded may have helped, its faster and cheaper to move armour that way.

So Leuchars is to shut, I thought it was 2 in addition to Kinloss/Cott....so which is the other?

Have I got that wrong?

According to the blurb at the end of the survey,it'll be used to gauge peoples reaction to the SDSR cuts & used to get a better understanding of how to treat service peeps & their families affected by SDSR.(or something like that)

Cott saved - for the army...

Cott saved - for the army...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-14194581 There goes the neighbourhood...

Funny that - just after the announcement of the closure - I wrote a letter to the local rag about how the announcement on East Midlands Today that the army were looking into it - and how it could not possibly be economic to move the Harriers to Wittering and close a perfectly good.... Oh - feck the Harriers are going as well... Definately the Army then... I suspect the chintz of Oakham will be taking on a little bit of tarnish...

Whats the army going to do with a newly laid runway and a purpose built QRA infrastructure? A prime locat for air cover for 4 main airports and important utility installations! How many times has Leuchars airfield been closed due bad weather compared to Lossie. "Large canvas".... you have hung the picture facing the wrong way! "Insular", "selfish" and "Scottish",your insults project your mental agility, surely when you put a uniform on it does not stop you asking questions? Lions being led by donkeys...I will continue to ask question and press my nice uniform.

Even during the "Cold War" Leuchars was a minor player, not really essential and that is how it is. It was to have been closed in 1984 but the dynasty of senior RAF officers who live in that area put up a fearsome fight and it remained, as a not really important asset. And now we come to the wailing and gnashing of teeth to the personal insults......by doing so you lose any credibility. IF Leuchars had been an asset, it would not be closing, And of course I would ask, since when did being a serviceman become a democracy, though I accept that whinging has been the prerogative of servicemen through the centuries. ? I too once pressed a nice uniform, similar to yours and never spent more than 15 months on one posting. So dont be pompous

Eh?

Also, the infrastructure at Leuchars is, (with the exception of a few recently constructed buildings) generally appalling. The place is genuinely falling apart. That's not to say it's not a sad day, I had many very happy years at Leu, and was hoping to go back there one day. The only 'good' thing to come out of the closure is the opportunity to laugh at all the rabid nationalists spouting their naive drivel all over the comments sections of the local rag websites. The Courier is a notable example.

Looking back, didn't you start the insults?

Alec S has put out a press thingy saying the airfield must be kept OP. I think that will happen How are the VIPs and Bigwigs going to get to the St.Andrews Links ? Spend an hour coming from Auld Reekie on what passes for a motorway the M90 ! then trying to get through Cupar. Seriously it looks like the aero cafe Chippy and the Commerical arms may not last the 2 year hiatus. Anyone ever down a jar or two in it?

You at Leuchars and a bit bitter and twisted by any chance?

So you think anyone at Lossie "kept Lossie open"? Get real! And as for the move to Marham, I'll wager that Tornado's will still be at Lossie in 5 years time. Now grow up and stop being so bitter, why not be please that at least one camp is staying open? Muppet!

It was labour's fault. They're all as bad but surely to god people must see that whenever they get in power it all goes tits up, the 70's, first, then again this time!

Agreed. The coalition are unpopular at the moment sorting out bliar and one eye's mess but I'd rather that than end up like Greece, Portugal or Ireland. I hate what is happening to the RAF at the minute but I think it's as a result of unrealistic spending, poor contract and project management, short sighted nest building over long term planning and corrupt political wheeling and dealing.

F**king C*nts the lot of them... hope the bankers are enjoying their bonuses :PDT_Xtremez_32:

Sad day Leuchars closing, spent many a happy year there. Apparently one of the pubs in the village is closed and boarded up already !!!! The Leuchars mafia will all be digging desperate escape tunnels now, end of a lot of career postings for some 20+ year tourists. A shame all the same, but it has been a waste of real estate for the last few years apart from the provision of Northern QRA.
