Trade Group 1 Pay Rise

I'd be interested to hear your evidence for this especially (correct me if I'm wrong) as I understand they mainly do FLM work and perhaps rects under close supervision.

He was on about the instructors at Cosford!

Just interesting what all have viewed on this post.

I am a Techie and the money issue is a sore point. I joined as a techie as I could not make pilot due to medical reasons i choose second best and thats being a liney. in the late 80s early 90s when i joined it was the pinnacle of not making the best but second best I can live with. Right now personally I have done 18 years in rank and im only a JNCO , i see fellow people with same time experience at Flt Sgt level. As a Techie or whatever you other trades want to call it , I think now its being discriminative to TG1 and TG2 personel as they have to do 2 more ranks to ever acheive WO, less pay for doing more than every other person. And just to make it worse Admin and MT both palm of there **** to the TG Important as they cannot cope. Its no bloody wonder people are leaving in there droves and only now they realise , i find that hard to believe that they care , so ****ing hate the RAF cause ****ing nobbers ruin it mainly in big shiny suits with stripes and private planes

Rant over again part 2

I get the impression your rant is more concerned with not achieving FS pay rather than the lack of pay differential between trades with a bit of extra bitterness thrown in because you didn't get pilot. Did the medical reasons also preclude WSO and NCA?

JT-Cpl - 4 yrs

cue big bite....?

what planet do you live on to say that is easily achieved? this year in my trade (TG1) it's 41 from 1800.

''1.I would honestly like to re-muster to the admin trade as it is the only chance I have of ever getting on a straight days shift (Cpl and above), ''

why not just move into a bay ?

This really depends on what generation you joined up in and what techie stream you entered under, I take it you were one of the lucky ones. You only have to see the ages of people on TMT2 to see the average age is 35+ (with a few exceptions).

He's a fcuking adminer...

There are plenty TG1 & 2 SNCOs who get picked up after 14 or so years, so stop using the "more ranks" argument as a reason why you have not.

SAC-JT (via FT) - 3 yrs
JT-Cpl - 4 yrs
Cpl - Sgt - 5 yrs

with a couple built in for slack.

Easy!

cue big bite....?

Billy Bunter did say his gripe was having to do the extra 2 promotions to keep up with people who reach FS in an 18 year period.

So let's for example add:

5 years Sgt - Chief
5 years Chief - FS

So in cluding your 'couple built in for slack' that's 24 years to reach FS. And to achieve that you have to have been in the right place at the right time or written your own assessments or been very lucky.

So you have actually proved BillyBunter's argument quite nicely.

Billy Bunter is a JNCO, and has not had to go through two extra promotions, only one. Also, if he has done 18yrs, then he was serving when promition was a lot quicker than it is today. Also, remember the uproar when it was mooted in the mid 90s about abolishing the rank of Chf Tech - that uproar did not come from the non-technical trades, so you reap what you sow.

That said, there are still plenty of TG1 JNCOs who get picked up after 12-14 years. If you are 18yrs in and not a SNCO, then maybe you are not quite as good as you think you are.

God, this is all been done to death on so many levels. How many threads in the past have we all discussed the Pay for Techie debate. We all know that techies have been royally screwed from on high, and when a rumour that something is going to be done to improve it, the thread, like all the others ends up turning into a slanging match between us and the other trades. I know it's a difficult choice to make ( I know, as I did it) but if folks are relly fed up with the way you are being treated, then you have to start looking for pastures new. I had some great years but I don't regret leaving at all. I now just go to work, do my job and come home. I have no pay 2000, JPA crap to worry about. No MT worries, except getting to work and back. If I have to work extra hours, it's overtime. No LITS paperwork, which is seen as a something as a complete joke by the Airlines in civvy street. To be honest folks, apart from the pension, what else is keeping folks in. I made the transistion from blue suit to civvy techie without any problems and I feel that i made the right choice, after being screwed around so much in the past. I know I am working a hell of alot more to earn my wages, but thats life. This thread about Techies pay is a debate that definatly needs to be sorted out but others have mentioned that it is going to be a while before something does definatly happen. The bottom line is, there are plenty of oppurtunities out here for Techies still, you just have to take a deep breath and take the plunge.:PDT_Xtremez_06:

Geeza I'm with you on this one.

If the AMMs are to be the future of the RAF then WE need to help train them not slag them off!
I have only just moved to a Sqn where they are employed & TBH they are not much different than the Lineys that were running around 229OCU circa 1986.

They are mainly employed on the line, as were most mechs in the mid 80s. We were only ever given trade work when the hallowed JTs (yes I eventually was one) were busy or in short supply.

If people are determined to prove the AMMs are poor quality then that only shows a poor management side to their character.
Get them on trade work & train them!

Anybody who has been in the RAF for more than 10 minutes would know that there are an awful lot of people out there who don't get promoted on their abilities, I have seen a lot of very good JTs leave through disilusionment of not getting picked up for promotion, and they most certainly were good enough!

I don't know BillyBunter's background, but if he had spent say 6 years as a JT and seen a whole bunch of SAC(T) being promoted in front of him because the RAF felt the need to prove the system worked, then maybe he has good grounds to be a bit peeved.

A bit harsh methinks.
It depends on when you joined and what the promotion was like when you hit the boards. It also depends on what types of assessment systems you have been through as well as whatever types of entrants you were competing against.

Me for example.
Mech-mech for 5 1/2 years.
FT course to JT.
JT for 3 1/2 years.
Cpl for 5 1/2 years.
Sgt by nearly 17 yrs.
By no means have I been a slacker and I had one average assessment throughout which was my 1st SAC one, the rest being above average.
I believe that as a mech mech I have done pretty well.

I also know of mech techs who got to their 3rd by their 13-14 year point.

Appos sometimes ran through quite quickly, timed promotion helped, as did DE's.
That said some appos didnt get their 3rd until 15-17 years, even though they hit the boards each year.

There are so many factors involved in promotion. To say that a person isnt as good as they think they are just seems to be a bit harsh to me, unless you know something we dont?

It would be nice for us techies to get a payrise. To be honest we feel that our trade sponsors just dont give a toss about us. Perhaps they have thought that we are in the top band and there is nothing else they could do.
That is until everyone else joined the top band and the ensuing uproar has prompted them into action?

Also at SNCO's Stn Cdr brief on Monday he was saying that the new pay rise when promoted from Cpl to Sgt was going to be 8%..

I have heard from the AMP brief that it is 5%.
On another thread someone else said its from April next year.

Much of the promotion to SGT is down to luck, this might sounds crazy but the day you walk into the CIO had a massive factor on your whole career, I might have had exactly the same assessment as Mr Masher but I joined up 4-5 years later.

WTF, it does sound crazy. Please enlighten us.

Your whole career path can be dictated by what the RAF requires when you join up, if for example you walked into the CIO in 91 you would have been in the RAF for 17 years now and be a Sgt, however you could have joined in 96 and also be a Sgt, this is no reflection you one of the other ability but purely luck due to changes in the service completely out of the individuals control.

Sorry, but that is absolute sh1te.

It's not sh1te really!
I got my 3rd after 7 years, in 2001.
I know for a fact that many Cpls I had worked with in the SH world, who got promoted just a couple of years b4 me were at their 10 year point. They were all extremely capable JNCOs but at their peak the promotion numbers just weren’t there. There are peaks and troughs in promotion numbers, such as options for change etc which have had huge impacts on promotion numbers.
Only last year the Sgt to C/T promotion numbers were slashed because of continuance, I managed to get promoted this year, but you can certainly be lucky in respect of when you are reaching a promotable point in your current rank, if there are large numbers required that year.
