I bet the resident MI6 operatives working out of the Tehran Embassy under the guise of the The Commercial Section or some non - descript deparment are earning their wages at present!.

The PM has said if diplomatic efforts fail in the release, then the UK could end up releasing evidence proving the group had not ventured into Iranian waters.

Like that is going to frighten the Iranians!!!. Bit of a lame shot across the bows Mr Blair!.

That's my point. The Israelis were acting illegally, so were captured. Our guys were acting legally (so we believe) and were kidnapped.

Illegally kidnapped?
Is there a term "legal kidnapping"?

My point still stands, the government are weak and need to get some brass ones. That said I don't know what is going on behind the scenes, perhaps TBJ you could enlighten me as you seem to be the expert in this subject and poo poo whatever opinions anyone else has on the matter.:PDT_Xtremez_28:

Yeah, let's start another war. It's not like we're at breaking point with the two we're in at the moment.:PDT_Xtremez_08:

Maybe if we had the kit and manpower to bargain from a position of strength the Iranians wouldn't have pulled this stunt.

One neatly Boscombed up Buccaneer, one large practice bomb full of paint.
Take the Bucc and insert it fast and low over Iran, lob the bomb at some fairly important place.
Then take one Foreign secretary, a telephone and an international call to say...
"Next one is a nuke you fcuker, our people released within the hour unharmed !" then hang up and allow Sky news to film the Bucc being loaded with a nice little bomb by guys in rad suits.
President I'madinnerjacket would fold and not fcukwith us again ! :PDT_Xtremez_14:

Tell you what then, lets just leave it shall we? Iran dont need nukes do they? All they have to do is nick someone elses forces personnel!

I'm not saying lets go to war with them, read what I have written FFS instead of scanning through it and making the wrong conclusions.

The diplomacy needs to be a lot firmer. Surely anyone can see that?
The example of Israel/Lebanon was to show that there are other ways but I dont believe I actually stated lets go down that road did I?
The latest round involves basically waving a bit of paper at Iran and going "nah nah nah nah nah, see? We are right and you are wrong nah nah nah nah"
Are you all happy with that? I'm not. Its still weak isnt it? Would you be happy if you were the families of those involved? Would you be happy if it were you out there?
Thats my point. This has been going on since Friday and there is still no resolution in sight.

So much for the great british superpower huh?

I thought my suggested resolution quite firm !
Why didn't HMS Cornwall interdict the patrol boats ? Not having a dig at the Swabbies here, just wondering ?

And my point was that we really aren't a superpower. How firm can your diplomacy be when the other side know that you can't back it up?

Someone famous (can't remember who) said something like "Talk softly and carry a big stick". Our stick is in use elsewhere and not actually very big so we're left with "speak softly and hope that the other side notice our friend with the big stick".

I would love it if this once proud nation was in a position to say "give them back or we'll bomb you back to the stone age". Sadly, thanks to Bliar and his cronies, we can't.

And it wouldn't have taken much to bomb them back to last wednesday either :PDT_Xtremez_31:

Great idea! Stand by for the biggest kiccking we've ever had since zulu!

Be nice to us Welsh and we'll get you out of the sh!t like we did at Rourke's Drift. 100 men of Harlech vs Iranian republican guard. A bit of a mismatch I agree, how about we only send 50 men of Harlech. Make a fight of it :PDT_Xtremez_30:

Shame most of the 100 Welshmen from Roukes Drift were actually from Warwickshire (England?)!!:PDT_Xtremez_30:

I don't think I've poo-poo'd anybody. General Melchet taught me the dangers of poo-poo. They had to disband the regiment, you know. As with any debate I have staked my position and will defend it. I have offered suggestions why diplomacy is the only sensible option we have at the moment, although on the face of it our Government appear to be asking nicely rather than making demands, which I think is too "softly, softly".

Others drew comparisons between the current situation and the Israeli response to the capture of 2 of their soldiers by Hizbollah. I have tried to demonstrate the fundamental differences between the 2 scenarios; some have chosen to misinterpret my words. I will try harder.

Out of the 11 VC's awarded 2 were to Welshmen.

24 Regt of Foot were the 2nd Warwickshire Regt, however their depot had moved to Beacon a couple of years before the Zulu war and they did become the South Wales Boarders, well, well, after the Zulu war. One Irishman got the VC there (Reynolds the Surgeon), One of the Williams was signed up under a false name (and was from England). The Swiss bloke was in 3 NNC (Natal Native Contingent, local mix race auxiliaries) and was not a peeler. Hitch was the thief and Hook was the Cook. Bourne, the Colour Sgt was 23 and was known derogatory by the troops as ‘The Kid’. There were Welsh blokes there, along with Irish, English and others. Quite a few guys from London and one from as far east as Norfolk.

Chaps,

Can we keep this thread from not going Off Topic as it's starting to go into a historical lesson!.

Any further breeches of zulus, welsh guards etc will be sent to Historical Warfare!.

Ditto!
If thats the case then I apologise. Thats the trouble with the written word, you are sometimes able to take it the wrong way.
It's nice to see now that I may have explained myself a little better with regards to our softly softly approach being too soft as others have agreed.

I just feel so angered that these poor lads and lass are stuck out there waiting for something to happen. God knows what is going through their minds. Iran are treating them humanely according to the news, but is that their idea of humanely or is it akin to our idea of it?
I feel sorry for the young lady out there. She has apparently been afforded privacy, in other words separated from the rest.
I would be interested to now what "the next phase" is though...............
