Obviously I don't know the current RoE that the booties operate under. But on the mainland a few years back pointing a weapon at us was considered a slotting offence.

I think you might have recieved different orders if the person with a gun was a uniformed member of another country that is not officially part of the current conflict.

I expect the brass on the Cornwall had two thoughts at the time:

1. If the lads pull the trigger they are all dead within 30 seconds.
2. If they kick off then the Middle East crisis goes into full meltdown.

In some ways being taken was the braver and better course of action and I am proud of the booties for not panicing.

What is the general mood like where you are TLS?

The image I posted is not to scale, but Cornwall seems some distance from the merchant vessel!.

WREN to be released???

WREN to be released???

Just heard on the BBC radio news that reports are now coming out of Turkey that the captive wren may be released within the next 24-48hrs.

Lets just hope this is true.

Not too bad, no worse than it would be on a RAF flying station if some Honnington rocks had been taken. In other words ****ed off and subdued but no weeping and wailing.

The guy whose nephew is being held is, naturally, worried as fcuk. He's currently trying to stop the extended family from overreacting to every snippet on the news. Luckily, the press haven't snifed them out yet.

It isnt confirmed yet though. The Iranian Foreign Office has "leaked" the info to the Turkish. Apparently the Iranian government havent confirmed it.

Perhaps they were limited by depth of water as to how much further they could get !

The area concerned is frequently dredged to remain navigable. By the look at that vessel that the party were searching, its a common size that sails up Southampton Water near me, and that has a maintained depth of 12 meters and HMS cornwall would have no problem with that depth.

I would love it if this once proud nation was in a position to say "give them back or we'll bomb you back to the stone age". Sadly, thanks to Bliar and his cronies, we can't.[/QUOTE]

they are already in the bloody stone age
whats going on over there is not on! but i dont think we have an option except for diplomacy. a show of force might be an idea. but just what is available? not a lot!
this could become part of a much bigger game. the iranians are up to no good. but we need to make sure they lose this round on the international stage.
aslo from what i gather the nuttter in charge of them just ahd a poor show in an election, ayatollas etc mentioned in earlier post.
scary times!!!!

At least by the Iranian TV broadcast the 15 are OK. Was the "kidnap" planed, too right it was, just by looking the video. Of course the Navy Radiers were on the right side of the territorial line, the IRG knew that, but then, that lot are a law to themselves.

However , it looks as if diplomancy will get their release.

Any boarding parties must now be armed with signifiacant weapons and with Herlo support, armed accordingly. The parties must also have Helo cover all the way back to ship. No doubt the Navy are changing their proceedures to suit.

Ehhh? significantly armed with weapons! I should have hoped they had been in the first place. As for top cover, it was there at the time of the incident.

A2's and 9 mm's are not the same firepower as heavy machine guns & RPG's are they? The Lynx was recovering to Cornwall when the indicent happened!

From their position they must have seen the Iranian patrol boats. Didn't they think there was anything suspicious about them?

Do the Navy do the same Conduct After Capture briefs as we do? It's a few months since I last attended one, but there are a few basics on that video that just looked wrong, e.g., Faye Turney's letter appeared to be in her own handwriting. I thought that was a big no no.
