PAYD Bringing ISS To Its Knees

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
Be careful what you jest about - the NEM is likely to introduce 3 blocks of Service (8-10 years, 10 years and then to Age 60). Only during the first block would pers be entitled to heavily subsidised housing - an increased LSAP would be provided for block 2 pers to get on the property ladder. Things are changing whether we like it or not folks.........

At least a few NEM rumours filtering out! Although the aged 60 one gets a big hint at during the New Pension brief!

Following that line of thinking, why not get rid of SLA and MQs and let people sort themselves out as these are also subsidised?

Even though I agree people should look after themselves. They should have the choice. Why can't SLA here be quality flats where they have the choice to cook for themselves?

The (relative) good old days of the mess and good cheap accommodation must stay, otherwise what is the incentive to do this job???

There are few perks anymore. Up here; really good, qualified, experienced people are turning down promotion to PVR and work in Aberdeen on a higher salary and better benefits.

I fully support this idea as long as my employers give me the right to tell them to get fcuked if they post me to an area not commutable from the property I buy.

Sounds interesting but just throwing a scenario at it...What if you're at Lossie with your pale wife and children and you've served just over 10 years...you're in a quarter still and they post you to Northwood. It's not your fault that house prices down there are high nor that your family are in jockland. There must be exceptions in this policy....

I was only thinking of a combined mess, not closing all the other facilities!
Going off topic slightly. Not sure that would work at all, if someone already has their own house/flat and is posted, what happens if they cant sell their property (negative equity)? You would end up with people out of pocket paying rent whilst paying mortgages for properties they cant sell.
An organisation that wants a motivated mobile workforce is going to have to be prepared to provide accommodation for their workforce (at a reasonable price).
I could not afford to rent a property around most of our southern bases let alone purchase one, I have my own home but could not afford to re-mortgage each time I was posted. If this is introduced many people would exit stage left!

At church Fenton when it reopened in 1979/80 they had combined messing with the ors and trainee pilots. Separate eating areas. They also did cook to order. You had to order for lunch at breakfast and tea at lunch and then when you got to the mess it was a matter of waiting for a few minutes. Lunch was normally a snack, poached eggs toasties etc and tea a normal roast curry. They had up to 10 choices at each meal. If you didn't order you got what was ever available. It worked and the food was very good. Plus not much waste.

So at your unit "We're" possibly sending armed guards to do a day shift without a proper meal for 19 hours? 5pm previuos night till 12pm that day, that's good management well done PAYD. Have you mentioned to the mess that the Armed Forces work all hours?

Not wishing to pour water on the fire of your righteous anger but much of the world functions quite well with nothing more than a couple of Weetabix and a cup of tea for breakfast.

Not wishing to W@nk in your chip pan, but much of the world doesn't have to stand on a gate with a weapon.

Nutritional experts and studies say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. people who skip breakfast or do not have the right breakfast are disproportionately likely to have problems with concentration. A guard who's mind Isnt on the job..... A bit dangerous that.

Not everyone can survive on a bowl of birdfood TBJ.

Oh dear FOMz, I knew that would be the response to my post but I didn't expect it to come from you.

Is stagging on without downing a plateful of cholesterol first more dangerous than a techie going to work on aircraft without the same? How about an air trafficker in Approach? What about those who live out and do not have time in the mornings to cook their own breakfast? Maybe SGF has changed since I last had the pleasure of a free week out of the office but I don't recall high levels of concentration being needed most of the time.

SGF is just an example, so do not take it literally.... But no concentration needed for guard? A bit nieve that comment TBJ. Its possibly the one job where you do need concentration and be alert for each 2 hour stint on the gate....

The fact remains though, PAYD is not allowing people to go on duty with a full stomach withahot meal inside them.

TBJ has fallen into the mindset of most of those with a Commission I'm afraid. As standing on a gate doesn't look particularly taxing it is treated with disdain. I've lost count of the amount of zobs who've whinged about something pointless or some percieved slight from a guard who's been standing in sub zero temps with inadequate cold weather gear. Or standing in excessive heat with webbing and a woolen beret on, usually not allowed a drink of water as those same zobs think it looks untidy. It's a shame because as an ex-ranker I'd like to think he'd remember that it can be easy to lose concentration when you're feeling good in that situation, if you haven't eaten properly for over twelve hours it could be asking for an ND.

I always had a problem with mess meal timings when I was a singlie anyway, 14 hours between the mess shutting after tea until it opened for breakfast being normal. The zobs and seniors on the other hand had a late tea and also had their brunch on the weekend, why the difference?

TBJ has fallen into the mindset of someone who has done his fair share of guard duties, that is all.

Of course eating properly is important. I just happen to think that a bowl of cereal for breakfast is enough to see you through until lunchtime. It's worked for me for most of my life anyway.

Name names then. Where is this? As far as I was aware meals are also supposed to be provided at "core" times. So unless your unit management/Contract Monitor have agreed to this the company are not honouring the contract.

If I remember correctly, it used to be an offense to miss breakfast and if you subsequently felt ill you could be charged for it.

Hmmm, I wonder how the rest of the world of shift workers manage to eat and still function properly?
Is this problem really that dificult to conquer?
